Hi. I'm looking for newspaper articles from Boston or New York, around April 17, 1929 related to a Margaret Sanger speech in Boston. The speech is famous: she was prevented from speaking by the mayor, and she stood on the stage, silent, gagged, while Arthur M. Schlesinger Sr. read her speech. The speech was April 16 or 17, 1929, so I suppose any newspaper articles would be between April 16 to 19, 1929. Thanks in advance.

Any photo of or advertisement for the book "The Pivot of Civilization" . It was published in 1922, but I'm not sure which month within the year .. perhaps October?. Any advertisements would probably be in New York or Boston newspapers. A copyright-free photo of the book cover would be nice, but an advertisement might be even better.

For reference, some pics of the 1922 USA edition are at: https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=31672239728; and pics of the 1923 UK edition are at https://www.treloars.com/pages/books/59792/margaret-sanger/the-pivot-of-civilization

Thanks!!

OED etymology of in situ

[edit]

I'm looking for the full text of the OED's definition of in situ, including etymology. I've looked up the term in the OED in the Wikipedia Library—there is no etymology there. The OED online entry says "The earliest known use of the word in situ is in the mid 1600s. [...] from 1648, in the writing of W. Molins." But the rest is paywalled.

Hi, has anyone got access to this site? Mostly primary sources, so no good for us generally, but there's lots of notes, introductory material etc. Unfortunately, I don't think it's part of the WL. Happy new year! :) SerialNumber54129A New Face in Hell 15:04, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Eddie891: thanks for this. Well, to be honest, I'm not sure 😕 I'm kinda hoping there's usable stuff in there about the medieval gentry (I think it's about their letters), but all I can see is a zip file. The letters could probably provide quotes, but if there's notes, intro or maybe a bibliography that'd be even better. But of course I won't know until I see it! If your conscience and the ethics of this page allows it, I'd appreciate you sending it? Serial (speculates here) 11:35, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

For ObsCure II. A French survival horror game from 2007 and a sequel to the 2004 horror game ObsCure. Dropped the perma-death mechanic the first one became known for. Hi all, a few requests for TWL stuff that I can't access... [6], [7], [8], [9], [10].

Also The NYT and The Times.

Sorry it's so much! It's regarding my G13 request for Domain.

And last but not least, if anyone fancies doing a general search of TWL for e.g. "James Herbert" AND "Domain", in case there's anything academic written on it, that'd be cool, although possibly a PITA  :)

Thanks for any help! Cheers, SerialNumber54129 11:23, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Serial Number 54129: Yes Sent NYT and The Times. NYT should be accessible via the link you sent though. As for the BNA links, could you provide any other info on them? I could try to see if I have access through a different database.

@Serial Number 54129: Yes Sent the first two BNA articles.
There's this weird workaround I found. If you signup for a BNA account (no credit card/payment info needed) it lets you view 3 pages for free. Clicking on the link you gave returns an access denied error, but if you strip the URL to just the number parts, it works! (Delete everything before and including "%252fbl%252f", delete everything after and including "&rememberme", replace all "%252f" with /, and stick https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/ infront of the first number) I used that to get the first two articles you requested (the other free page was used for testing). The following three URLs should work for the remaining three BNA articles, if you sign up:

Apologies in advance for the amount of resources that I am requesting. If it helps, four of them are chapters from the same book. I would be using these sources to improve the Satsu (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) article, ideally for a potential FAC (and also to just improve it in general). The sources are below:

Thank you for your help! Aoba47 (talk) 00:55, 23 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have no issues with waiting as I am honestly just grateful that there are ways to access this kind of information in the first place (and I am working more slowly on this project in general). I will put in requests for that soon. Apologies for not being more specific with the Cocca 2016 source. I would greatly appreciate Chapther 5, which is titled "Slayers. Photo of Kitty Marion

[edit]

Searching for a photo of Kitty Marion published in a New York City newspaper in March or April 1925. The photo is: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kitty_Marion_in_USA_selling_BC_Review_in_1925.jpg The purpose of this query is (a) is to prove that the photo was published (for copyright reasons); and (b) to discover any accompanying text/article.

For Margaret Sanger

Thanks, Noleander (talk) 15:05, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Noleander: The New York Public Library reproduce the photograph here, saying it is in the Kitty Marion Papoers. The finding aid to the Kitty Marion papers here says "Photographs consist of one photo of Kitty Marion with two unidentified children, a photo of Miss Marion selling The Birth Control Review that ran with several newspaper articles, and a snapshot of women and staff in the office of the American Birth Control League clinic. The photos featuring Miss Marion are not dated, however the American Birth Control League clinic photo dates from 1925." I don't know if that is sufficient for your needs. Several sources give 1915 as the date, but that is clearly wrong. DuncanHill (talk) 19:02, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for doing the research. The photograph is definitely from 1925, i'm not sure why so many sources say it's 1915. The important fact you found is that the library says that the photograph was published in some newspaper articles, that's the critical fact I'm looking for. Thanks!
It would be really ideal if someone could find a newspaper article showing the photograph, that would make the copyright issue indisputable. If you don't mind, I will leave this issue open for another couple days, To see if anybody can find a newspaper article. thanks.Noleander (talk) 19:40, 24 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Noleander: Not sure about a newspaper article in 1925 (newspapers.com/Gale/Proquest) didn't show anything, but they aren't the best for pictures. However, a version of this was published on the front page of the Birth Control Review itself in the October 1925 issue. The link says Texto completo no disponible (i.e. "full text not available"). Dialnet is mainly a bibliographic database, and doesn't usually host articles. Tenpop421 (talk) 22:09, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I didn't see that. —Bruce1eetalk 22:33, 26 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
