Terrorism Confinement CenterCecot – per WP:CONCISE and it is the WP:COMMONNAME as the lede says 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 05:17, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: @Abo Yemen: the common name is not "Cecot", it's "CECOT". PizzaKing13 (¡Hablame!) 🍕👑 05:23, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do not move -- see this recent New York Times quote:

Mr. Bukele said Monday that criminals deported by the United States would go to the Terrorism Confinement Center, a prison built to house 40,000 people.

Brad (talk) 07:21, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But how does one single sentence prove that "CECOT" is not the WP:COMMONNAME? Tom Danson (talk) 01:01, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have evidence CECOT is the common English name? BBC says "...also known as CECOT (short for Terrorism Confinement Centre)..." [1], after just calling it "El Salvador's mega-jail" for the first part of the article Timtjtim (talk) 12:03, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Comment:
RSes that consider CECOT to be the alternative name, see [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]
RSes that use CECOT as the main name: [8], [9], [10], [11], [12],
Doesn't look to me like there's a clear common name. Timtjtim (talk) 12:10, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose "Cecot" if it's moving it should be CECOT Timtjtim (talk) 12:11, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - in the absence of a decisive common name, which appears to be the case here, we have to consider our other naming policies. In this case, the current title is more recognizable, and in my opinion has a lower bar for acceptance than Cecot or CECOT. ASUKITE 18:04, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Inmate or prisoner?

[edit]

What's the preferred term? It's inconsistent throughout. 77.124.18.153 (talk) 13:34, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

While they are technically synonyms, prisoner is less specific as it applies to anyone deprived of liberty and free will, whereas inmate specifically refers to a person residing in a prison/jail. Hope that helps! Sophisticatedevening (talk) 13:37, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't it good to change the words up to avoid repetition? 1101 (talk) 07:18, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Elegant variation needs to be applied carefully. There's a cautionary tale about cub football reporters using different synonyms for "ball". In this case I wouldn't worry too much either way. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 15:07, 28 March 2025 (UTC).[reply]
Note that inmate can apply to many other places than prison. Wiktionary notes that it became a euphemism for "prisoner" starting in the 1970s, and subsequently became the default definition among younger people.
However given the context either term should be abundantly clear. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 15:07, 28 March 2025 (UTC).[reply]

@PizzaKing13, I saw your note about checking NPOV and BLP in your copy edit request. I am not an expert, but I think this article is written neutrally, despite the charged subject matter. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any specific questions. SilkPyjamas (talk) 19:13, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
