Symonds
[edit]This article has John Addington Symonds "claiming" something in 1899. That is the publication date of the work cited, but S. himself had died several years earlier and was no longer available for live comment. Bigturtle (talk) 19:28, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects → The Lives – WP:CONCISE and WP:COMMONNAME. ―Howard • 🌽33 14:01, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose - much too ambiguous and vague. I think "Vasari's Lives" would be the WP:COMMONNAME, though of course most references are to a single Life. WP:THE is also an objection. Johnbod (talk) 00:22, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- I would support "Vasari's Lives" as an alternative. ―Howard • 🌽33 07:05, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose for being too concise, vague really, but I'd support something like Vasari's Lives. Killuminator (talk) 11:17, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose, besides the nominated name being way too short, this volume is one of the most famous, if not the most famous, books on artists, etc. The full name is appropriately used here, as the proper name of a book. And per Johnbod and Bill & Ted. Randy Kryn (talk) 12:22, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Move to The Lives of the Artists or Lives of the Artists. This is another title in use for this work; it's more concise than the current article title and less ambiguous than the proposed one. The Lives of the Artists is the title used for the current Penguin Classics and Oxford World's Classics translations, but it does also appear as Lives of the Artists (including on the covers of older Penguin editions). The Lives of the Artists (Bellori) is also known by the same title, but Vasari is the primary topic for this title. Ngrams show "Lives of the Artists" to have overtaken "Vasari's Lives" in popularity after 1982. Ham II (talk) 13:32, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Really no need for being more concise with this title. The book (and its title) are so well-known within the artworld and historical context of art texts that any lessening of the title does not benefit Wikipedia as an accurate encyclopedia. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:43, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose, no need for this. Fram (talk) 08:48, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
