What's it about?

[edit]
Sciences III

An edit-a-thon is an event where volunteer editors tackle a part of Wikipedia that needs improvement. Complete beginners are welcome; training and troubleshooting is provided. All you need to bring is a laptop and any resources you have handy (books, magazines etc)!

This edit-a-thon is being hosted by GEMS in STEM, and celebrates International Women's Day. We will focus on improving the coverage of women mathematicians, statisticians, physicists and related people, places, and things. You don't need to be a expert to take part, anyone can help with editing, researching, proofreading, and adding photos.

When and where

[edit]
  • Fri 7 March 2025, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm NZST
  • Room 241, Sciences III, Dunedin (map)

Timetable

[edit]
  • 9.00: Meet and greet
Introductions, and account creation if needed
  • 9.15: Wikipedia tutorial
We'll learn how Wikipedia works and how to improve, create, and reference articles. Experienced editors present will be buddied up with newcomers.
  • 10.00: Editing
Our goal is to improve Wikipedia's coverage of women mathematicians, statisticians, physicists and related people, places, and things. You can improve existing articles, add information to Wikidata, or create stub articles for topics missing from Wikipedia. Bring your own ideas or work on our suggested articles below.
  • 11.45: Finishing up. Add our contributions to the list on this page. Make sure you fill out an evaluation form.

To attend

[edit]
  • The Edit-a-thon is free and open to all.
  • This workshop will be following "friendly space" guidelines; check them out. Harassment and disruption won't be tolerated, online or offline.

People attending

What to bring

[edit]
  • Laptop and power cord. Laptops are definitely easier to edit on than iPads.
  • Any snacks or drink you want. Snacks will be provided, courtesy of GEMS in STEM.
  • Any resources such as books, journals, magazine or newspaper articles relevant to articles you're interested in.
  • Photos you've taken or art that could illustrate articles; you'll learn how to donate these to Wikimedia Commons so other Wikipedia articles can use them.

Preparation

[edit]
  1. If you're coming, try to create a Wikipedia account beforehand: don't wait until the day to do it! Here's a form you can use if you like. Creating an account makes editing much easier (here's more info on why you should). You'll need to pick a "handle" for your username; you could use your real name, but it's nice to have the option to be a bit anonymous if you want. Here's some advice on picking a username.
  2. The more you prepare, the more you'll be able to get done. You may want to read up on avoiding common mistakes, but Wikipedia has a "don't bite the newbies" policy, and we'll be there to troubleshoot.
  3. Have a think about topics you'd like to work on; do a little research first so you're prepared. You don't have to be an expert; anyone who can do library research and write clearly can help improve Wikipedia. The best candidates for Wikipedia articles are people, places, or things that are "notable". In Wikipedia terms, "notable" people are those who've been covered in a number of reliable independent sources, such as news, books, authoritative websites, or magazine interviews. If you're proposing to create to Wikipedia article it's important to make sure your subject is "notable"; talk to us if you're not sure – we can help.
  4. If you want to bring photos along and add them to Commons and Wikipedia, they need to be free of any copyright or released under a Creative Commons license that lets anyone use them. (What's Creative Commons?) If not, you must be the creator/copyright holder – ask us if you're not certain what's allowed, and we'll help.

Outcomes

[edit]

Information about editing done during this workshop will be aggregated to create event metrics for our report back to funding organisations (e.g. number of editors involved, number of pages edited (see the dashboard here). If you want to know more about this or object to being included in such metrics, please talk to one of the organisers.

The WikiPixie

[edit]

We invented the role of the behind-the-scenes helper (a sort of domestic sprite, not to be confused with a WikiGnome) at this event. The on-site organiser will have their hands full just answering questions, and can't keep track of every edit, let alone make sure every editor is feeling supported. The WikiPixie should be introduced to the newbies via video chat at the start of the event, so the newbies can see they're a human being, not just a name. It's also important for the WikiPixie to join again at the end, so they can farewell the newbies and be thanked their work. (As we all know, if you don't thank the WikiPixie for their work they'll curdle your milk, which in this context probably translates as undoing everyone's edits). We drafted a list of duties for the pixie:

  1. Given Dashboard rights so they can enrol new editors
  2. Updates the list of attending editors
  3. Creates a welcome message for for each newcomer
  4. Has multiple tabs open to track each new user's contributions (as the dashboard is very slow to update)
  5. Send a Thanks for the first couple of edits people make
  6. Check those initial edits to make sure people are getting it right; leave a note on their Talk page if not
  7. Check the event page to make sure edits are also being logged there
  8. Remove templates where newbies have solved problems with the article
  9. Intercede if anyone nominates an article for speedy deletion, fixing the problem if necessary

Media

[edit]

We'll be taking photos for the record. If you don't want to be in any photos, tell an organiser at the start of the event and we'll make sure not to include you in images.
