DragonofBatley cleanup
[edit]cc: Star Mississippi, Tryptofish, SchroCat
Good morning voorts, I hope you are well. I wanted to let you know to let you know that the clean-up exercise following on from this ANI case is done. There are actually three two articles still to finalise, two both at AfD and a PROD which expires today (you could close that one!), but those are now out of our hands. The record of what we have done is here. It was regrettable that we weren't able to take DragonofBatley with us, and that the intended learning objective wasn't realised, but I think the clean-up objective has been met.
I did want to make three follow-up points.
- First, as the clean-up record shows, this exercise was very necessary. Of the 400+ articles reviewed, fewer than fifty didn't require any action. In those that did, we identified, and corrected, multiple instances of error, addressed multiple cases of Failed Verification and dealt with a large number where there were Notability issues.
- Second, this has been a real collaboration, and the users Rupples, PamD and Noswall59 put in a huge amount of effort. I'd suggest that thanks/barnstars are very much merited.
- Third, I think it likely that, at some point, DragonofBatley will appeal their block. As and when they do, it's important that those considering an appeal are aware of the clean-up. The record shows what happens if DragonofBatley has unfettered editing rights.
I've copied in those editors most directly involved in the two ANI cases. Let me know if there's anything more I need to do. Best wishes. KJP1 (talk) 07:21, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks KJP1 for dealing with this - and to Rupples, PamD and Noswall59: it's been sterling work all round and my thanks to you all. Unfortunately Dragoon hasn't taken the advice (yet!) of honing his skills on Simple Wiki, but there is always hope for that before his six months is up. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 07:34, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- @KJP1, SchroCat, Rupples, and Noswall59: Congratulations to us all but especially to KJP1 who has driven the whole cleanup process. We have now remedied a lot of DoB's poor editing, although I fear that there are many other articles which are in a poorer state after his editing (I'm personally not keen on "collages" as the main infobox image for a place, but opinions differ; there are probably a lot of very inaccurate distances from nearby places after his purge of decimal places in "x.z miles from y" statements, where the conversions to kms may well be very iffy; lots of towns have lists of "areas" which may or may not be sourceable; various chunks of long-standing but unsourced text have been removed without so much as a {{cn}}; etc).
- I find myself worrying whether we should collectively have picked up on the problems earlier. His talk page as of 6 Aug 2021 (he then blanked it) shows a litany of problems. I used to check his contributions list frequently and picked up and fixed a lot of little problems, commenting on some on his talk page, but there was an episode where he told me to keep off his talk page, and when I returned he took me to ANI in May 2023, complaining about feeling hounded. It was all a bit inconclusive, and some editors thought I was "pestering" him. He promised there "Moving forward I will (and I mean will) check and double check and quadruple check my edits." We saw how effective that was.
- I feel sad for him in that we've stopped him, at least for now, from doing something he clearly enjoys, but relieved that the stream of poor edits will now cease. I think it may be because of this experience that I've recently taken two fairly new editors to ANI who were producing vast numbers of edits with a high error rate, to protect the encyclopedia (here, now blocked and here, still open. - Thank you all for your work on this, your willingness to keep an open mind, and your attempts at getting DoB to engage. I hope that this project can be replicated at broader scale similar to CCI. I agree with Pam that it's unfortunate that DoB didn't fully engage, but at least he was given a chance. voorts (talk/contributions) 22:28, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- Belated thanks @KJP1 @SchroCat @PamD et al. I hope that if and when they choose to return, DoB takes the time to learn from your collective cleanup work to understand where they went wrong. I recall them mentioning some personal stress and choosing to AGF that it prceluded them from taking on board the feedback, but I'm concerned about the long history identified. Please do ping me if I can be of further help. Star Mississippi 02:44, 26 February 2025 (UTC)

[edit]@Voorts, please also ask them to overturn this RfC, as it was executed immaturily and they haven't answered my objection at their talk page either [1], nor they seem to heed my suggestion to re-open the discussion and let it be closed an comparatively experienced editor. – Garuda Talk! 18:00, 25 February 2025 (UTC)
- You can bring a close review if you want. I don't have time to review that discussion. voorts (talk/contributions) 22:46, 25 February 2025 (UTC)

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter
[edit]The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.
Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,168 round points, mainly from 4 featured articles and 4 good articles on old military history, in addition to an assortment of GA and FA reviews.
Generalissima (submissions) with 1,095 round points, mainly from 2 FAs, 2 featured lists, 8 GAs, and 16 Did You Know articles mainly on historical topics.
BeanieFan11 (submissions), with 866 round points from 20 GAs, 23 DYKs, and 2 In the News articles primarily about athletes.
Sammi Brie (submissions), with 846 round points from 16 GAs about radio and TV stations, 45 GA reviews, and 3 DYKs.
Hey man im josh (submissions), with 816 round points from 5 FLs about sports and Olympic topics, 46 FL reviews, 3 ITN articles, and a large number of bonus points.
MaranoFan (submissions), with 815 round points primarily from 3 FAs and 1 GA about music, in addition to 9 article reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Question from Gladin2020 (09:57, 28 February 2025)
[edit]is my page activated --Gladin2020 (talk) 09:57, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
- No. I deleted your userpage as inconsistent with Wikipedia's purposes. Please review WP:BLP and WP: AUTOBIOGRAPHY. voorts (talk/contributions) 16:10, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
Question from Aesus Packaging and Labeling (15:59, 28 February 2025)
[edit]Hi Voorts, I'm completing my Bing business page listing and it requires a Wikipedia page for my company. How do I create a page for my company, or is it an article? I know, no promotional language, just the facts. Thanks! --Aesus Packaging and Labeling (talk) 15:59, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
- First, you need to request a name change otherwise your account will be blocked. Account names cannot be business names on Wikipedia. Second, unless your company has received several write ups in independent, non-trade publications, it is unlikely that an article about your company will be accepted. Wikipedia is strict about what companies get articles because lots of them try to use Wikipedia for advertising. Please review our guideline about articles on corporations. voorts (talk/contributions) 16:05, 28 February 2025 (UTC)

Alexander Paul Burton
[edit]Hi there, Thanks for your help and guidance in creating first Wikipedia page. I had been learning to make edits and also created some other pages. Thank you for your patience. I am having trouble with the page Alexander Paul burton - a moderator seems to have some kind of personal vendetta against the subject? Not un heard of as he is a public figure. The edits they're suggesting seem unproportioned, unfair and slightly vindictive as they don't break Wikipedia policy. Thanks PeterLawriwBahan (talk) 12:13, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- Nobody has a vendetta against anyone, and anyone on Wikipedia can nominate an article for deletion. voorts (talk/contributions) 16:39, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- I've also looked at the article and some of the same issues with prose are still there from when I commented on it. Additionally, I did some research into Burton and do not believe that he meets Wikipedia's notability guideline for musicians. The media coverage he has received is not in-depth; they're just announcements of songs he's released. voorts (talk/contributions) 17:10, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
