Question from WesttCott (21:28, 23 January 2025)

[edit]

hey! just wanted to say hi.

was wondering how to see the articles that needed translations. thanks --WesttCott (talk) 21:28, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @WesttCott and welcome to Wikipedia! You might check this page to see directions on how to translate articles from other languages into English. Since you're new, I suggest you edit some other pages beforehand so that you can understand our policies and guidelines before starting complicated tasks like translation. I just left a welcome message on your talk page. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Fathoms Below (talk) 21:31, 23 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am actively supplementing the source. Hope you do not try to repair. I am very tired of this vandalism. I have to use my phone because I live in a storm. I hope you let my efforts not lose. What do you think if you have just built the castle, I destroy it the way you are doing with my hard work? Are you really human? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2401:D800:BF15:88A4:BCD2:4EDC:3B9D:B141 (talk) 21:37, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to explain that I could only use my phone to connect information, because where I was living out of power due to heavy rain. But maybe you don't have goodwill to respect my efforts. I am really uncomfortable. 2401:D800:BF15:88A4:BCD2:4EDC:3B9D:B141 (talk) 21:42, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi IP, I replied to you on your talk page. You can re-add the information, but please make sure that you include inline citations. I appreciate your efforts, but the information you added needs to be cited to reliable sources and large portions of it didn't provide citations for the material. Question from Bosnamapping (14:58, 27 January 2025)

[edit]

Hi im new and i wanted to ask how can I create an article --Bosnamapping (talk) 14:58, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Bosnamapping. Writing an article is a tricky process for new users such as yourself, so I suggest editing Wikipedia for a little while to get used to how things are done here before trying to create your first page. But if you would like to start now, I suggest looking at this page which can guide you through how articles are made on Wikipedia. If you have any specific questions, you can ask here on my talk page or at the teahouse. Cheers, Fathoms Below (talk) 17:24, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello Fathoms Below, I am looking to understand what special care is to be taken when adding cititations that you pick up from a wikipedia page of a different language while you are trying to translate the article to english.

I am specifically referring to this article- Hisashi Abe, which I am trying to build with translated contents from https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%98%BF%E9%83%A8%E6%B0%B8 . I want to attribute the right citations while I am composing the English page.

Also please guide me with pointers to keep note of while translating such articles taking assistance of machine-translators.

Hi @Kumi-da. It's a bit late for me at the moment, and I don't like to leave mentee questions hanging, so I might be able to answer your question sometime tomorrow, but maybe in the meantime you can ask this same question at the teahouse? Some people there may be able to give you a faster response! Fathoms Below (talk) 03:41, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

[edit]

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from BeeMan1567 (21:10, 2 March 2025)

[edit]

When creating a page, how do I add the drop down sections, like references, sources, history, see also, and more? --BeeMan1567 (talk) 21:10, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @BeeMan1567 and welcome to Wikipedia! You can add sections to a page by using equal signs "=" that enclose the section title you want to make. For example, you can add a References section by writing "=== References ===" followed by the text you wish to include. See Help:Section for more information. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Fathoms Below (talk) 22:53, 2 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from HomerLikesMarge7285 (19:41, 15 March 2025)

[edit]

Hi. I made a draft about this flu season. Can you look at " United States 2024-2025 flu season"? I am new and I really need help with it because I got in a little bit of trouble earlier for copyrighting. --HomerLikesMarge7285 (talk) 19:41, 15 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there @HomerLikesMarge7285. I looked at the draft you made, and the first fix that I suggest you make is try to integrate the URLs you put into your draft as inline citations. You might want to look at the page here which gives some help on how to insert inline citations. If there is anything you're confused about with inserting inline citations, you can ask here on my talk page. Fathoms Below (talk) 17:08, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, after your block of User:Chiang Mai International School, an obvious sock popped up and continued to edit the page. Jfire (talk) 14:53, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jfire Thanks for the notification. I was a bit lenient and left a warning, but if promotional editing to the page resumes I have it watchlisted and will apply sanctions if necessary. Fathoms Below (talk) 19:56, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mgstotl (22:53, 20 March 2025)

[edit]

Hello, mentor! I would need some help. I tried to make a new article about group Katanija. How do I make it visible to the others, when they search for the name of the feoup on the wikipedia?

Thank you for your help. Marija --Mgstotl (talk) 22:53, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Mgstotl. Since you're new to Wikipedia, you will have to submit the page through Articles for Creation (AFC), where one of our volunteers will check the page and determine if it is ready to be considered a Wikipedia article. However, Wikipedia needs a subject to be notable to be considered for inclusion in the main encyclopedia space. In other words, the topic needs to be covered by multiple reliable sources that discuss it in-depth. Since your page has no clear references, I suggest seeking out citations and including them in your page to help it be accepted at AFC. Also, do you have any affiliation with Katanija? If so, you should read the page linked here and disclose whether you have a connection. Do you have any questions? if so, you can ask here or at a help area called the teahouse, and we will try our best to answer. Fathoms Below (talk) 22:59, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Easternsahara

[edit]

Hello, I have two inquiries. The first one is that I have greatly contributed to the article about the film If He Hollers, Let Him Go! and I was wondering what I should do to nominate it for a higher class than stub. I think I have found most of the relevant information and formatted it mostly correctly. The page said to ask your mentor about your first nomination and so I am here. The second question is how do I make the userboxes show properly? Thank you very much. Easternsahara (talk) 03:23, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Easternsahara Since the page is a little under 500 words it should be enough to qualify for s Start-class. To make user boxes show properly, you can add them by transcluding one to your userpage by adding the text in brackets. For example, you can copy and paste the text "{{User Abandoned Building}}" to have the relevant user-box added to your page. A gallery of user boxes and the texts you can add to make them show up are located here. Does this help? Fathoms Below (talk) 03:53, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it does help indeed, thank you. Easternsahara (talk) 21:47, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Kianrahonam-Writer (09:32, 9 April 2025)

[edit]

Hi Sir, When will i get Change to Contribute my own articles --Kianrahonam-Writer (talk) 09:32, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Kianrahonam-Writer:, I am not Fathoms Below but you can not make an article about yourself. This is because Wikipedia has a lot of rules, but it is still fun! Two very important rules apply you you here. One is called Wikipedia:Notability. What is notability? It is basically how many trustable sources cover the topic. For example, Jawaharlal Nehru is covered because he is very important, he did many things that have been covered by newspapers, documentaries, etc. That means you should send your stories and poems to newspapers first, because Wikipedia has another policy named Wikipedia:No original research. This means that if I discover that, for example, tamil nadu is not real and it is just water, I need to reach out to newspapers and scientific journals before Wikipedia covers my topic. Now, let us say that happened, many newspapers and scientific journals covered my new discovery, I can not make an article about it. Why? Because Wikipedia has another rule called Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. What this means? Well, it means that I am not allowed to write about things that I am connected directly to, because I would say that I am a very intelligent, handsome and charming man, even if that is true it is not neutral. Wikipedia wants to be neutral, so it does not allow people to write about themselves. It feels very bad when your article is deleted. You should read Wikipedia:Why was the page I created deleted? to help you.
Now, that sounds very sad. BUT YOU CAN STILL DO IMPORTANT THINGS FOR WIKIPEDIA. If you are not very good at English but still want to do work on Wikipedia, there is Wikipedia in Kannada language also. https://kn.wikipedia.org is a link to it. You can read and write page on it. If your English is good enough to work on English Wikipedia, you should join a WikiProject. A WikiProject is a group of editors on Wikipedia who want to work on things together. What WikiProject you should join? There are many, I suggest Wikipedia:WikiProject India and Wikipedia:WikiProject Poetry because you are Indian and like poetry. There are other WikiProject too, you can find them by yourself.
I have also noticed that you have put your personal information on your page, there are bad people on the internet so you may want to delete this.
Please do not hesitant to ask any questions, thank you! Easternsahara (talk) 23:53, 22 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from McTopCat (12:39, 20 April 2025)

[edit]

Hello how can I add photographs --McTopCat (talk) 12:39, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @McTopCat. You can add photographs to a page by adding the term "[[File:IMAGE NAME HERE]]" to an article or other page on Wikipedia. Substitute IMAGE NAME HERE with the name of the file you wish to have as an image such as "Flag of the United States (DoS ECA Color Standard).svg" Please see Wikipedia:Images for further instructions. The page here is also pretty helpful to learn what to do or not to do with images. If you need any clarifications, please ask here! Fathoms Below (talk) 00:14, 21 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to alert you that they appear to be back as User:Muppet1976, whose only edits so far are to revert anyone who reverted the edits of the IP above.
