Updates for editors

- Starting next week, talk pages at these wikis – Spanish Wikipedia, French Wikipedia, Italian Wikipedia, Japanese Wikipedia – will get a new design. This change was extensively tested as a Beta feature and is the last step of talk pages improvements. [1]
- You can now navigate to view a redirect page directly from its action pages, such as the history page. Previously, you were forced to first go to the redirect target. This change should help editors who work with redirects a lot. Thanks to user stjn for this improvement. [2]
- When a Cite reference is reused many times, wikis currently show either numbers like "1.23" or localized alphabetic markers like "a b c" in the reference list. Previously, if there were so many reuses that the alphabetic markers were all used, an error message was displayed. As part of the work to modernize Cite customization, these errors will no longer be shown and instead the backlinks will fall back to showing numeric markers like "1.23" once the alphabetic markers are all used.
- The log entries for each change to an editor's user-groups are now clearer by specifying exactly what has changed, instead of the plain before and after listings. Translators can help to update the localized versions. Thanks to user Msz2001 for these improvements.
- A new filter has been added to the Special:Nuke tool, which allows administrators to mass delete pages, to enable users to filter for pages in a range of page sizes (in bytes). This allows, for example, deleting pages only of a certain size or below. [3]
- Non-administrators can now check which pages are able to be deleted using the Special:Nuke tool. Thanks to user MolecularPilot for this and the previous improvements. [4]
View all 25 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, a bug was fixed in the configuration for the AV1 video file format, which enables these files to play again. [5]

I am uploading an image for the first time onto Wikipedia. It is an image of a portrait painting I did in 2001. The same portrait painting was previously uploaded by another person, but in poor quality.
In step #4 at Wikipedia's help page "Upload Your Own Work," it gives instructions on what to do if your work was published under a different credit name. But those instructions are a bit unclear. Can you clarify for me? --Steven Seward (talk) 22:36, 17 February 2025 (UTC)

I then placed my new image into this Wikipedia page - William Kernahan Thomas. However, I am now having trouble editing the simple information about the painting. When I uploaded it, I automatically used the "information" template (I think that is what it is called) instead of using the much more informative "Artwork" template that I see on all paintings in Wikipedia. I went back to try and change it to the Artwork template, but I kept getting odd results, as you can see for yourself if you open up the page. - Hello again, Cassiopeia,
- I am having trouble learning how to attach an "artwork" template to a painting in order to give all the relevant information about the painting.
- My ultimate goal is to create a Wikipedia page on my father, James E. Seward, a noted 20th century illustrator and portrait painter, which would entail uploading a few pictures of his paintings. In order to get my feet wet, I uploaded a painting of mine into a website that already had a poor rendition of my painting. I would like to do a few more for practice, as there are other Wikipedia pages about people I have painted portraits of in the past. But I cannot figure out how to get the "artwork" template to work. I highly doubt you are doing a proper WP:BEFORE, you've just sent sent 15 football related biographies. I've looked at one, an Iraqi with 35 international caps. I don't think you will be able to do a proper search due to the language barrier. I've seen people topic banned for multiple nominations like this. So you really need to be careful here. Several years ago, individuals participating in team sports who represent their countries or in a professional football leagues were able to comply with the NPORT guidelines; however, approximately 2-3 years ago, almost all team sports athletes ceased to meet the requirements following the vote to amend the NSPORT regulations. I was disheartened by the outcome of the voting decisions, as many Olympians and team sports athletes represent their countries have no longer meet the NSPORT criteria. For all the recent AfD nominations I submitted, - see here -1, -2, -3, -4-5, -6, -7, -8, -9, -10, -11, -12 and -13. All votes are subject to redirection or deletion by editors, which indicates that they believe the subject does not meet the guidelines for General Notability (GNG) or Notability for Sports (NSPORT), except you voted on one of the AfDs to keep the article and yet you didn't provide any IRS sources to support your vote/discussion.

Updates for editors
- Administrators can now customize how the Babel feature creates categories using Special:CommunityConfiguration/Babel. They can rename language categories, choose whether they should be auto-created, and adjust other settings. [9]
- The wikimedia.org portal has been updated – and is receiving some ongoing improvements – to modernize and improve the accessibility of our portal pages. It now has better support for mobile layouts, updated wording and links, and better language support. Additionally, all of the Wikimedia project portals, such as wikibooks.org, now support dark mode when a reader is using that system setting. [10][11][12]

Undiscussed page moves and reverting move
Hey Cassiopeia, you recently moved Jun Yong Park to Park Jun Yong twice, with no explanation (your first move, another editor's reversion, your re-revert in two steps) The editor who reverted you, understandably frustrated, opened this RM.
Your behavior here was not ideal. Your first move should have had an edit summary explaining why you performed it. It looks like none of your recent pagemoves have an edit summary (besides, occasionally, a script's default summary). You should not have reverted the other editor's reversion of your first move, as by then it was obviously potentially controversial. You should have been the one to open the RM. In my opinion, what you did was move warring and a failure to meet the conduct expectations of page movers. Maybe you had a good reason for your actions, but there's no way to know when you don't explain them.
I also strongly encourage you to perform round-robin page moves, which your revert of the revert was, via a subpage of Draft:Move, instead of an arbitrary related title like Jun Yong Park (fighter) as you did this time, for the reason given at WP:ROBIN.
I really hope you had a good reason for all this. If not, you owe Marty2Hotty an apology. And please, please use edit summaries. Toadspike [Talk] 12:00, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
- Toadspike, I have written to Marty, Park is the last name for the subject as the subject is Korean and as just like Chinese, the surname (last name) list first then follow by given name - Korea last name is placed first before the middle name (examples South Korea president - Park Chung Hee and Park Geun-hye, South Korea K-pop stars - Park Ji-hoon, Park Jin-young and Park Hyung-sik and just like the Chinese named (examples - Chiang Kai-shek Director-General of the Kuomintang, Mao Zedong and Xi Jinping president of China). To edit pages protected by the "extended confirmed" tag, an editor must meet specific criteria: their account must be at least 30 days old and have a minimum of 500 edits (both criteria are required). You registered in 2022, but you currently have only 22 mainspace edits on Wikipedia (see here). This falls significantly short of the 500 mainspace edits required. Updates for editors
- All logged-in editors using the mobile view can now edit a full page. The "Edit full page" link is accessible from the "More" menu in the toolbar. This was previously only available to editors using the Advanced mobile contributions setting. [16]
- Interface administrators can now help to remove the deprecated Cite CSS code matching "
mw-ref
" from their local MediaWiki:Common.css. The list of wikis in need of cleanup, and the code to remove, can be found with this global search and in this example, and you can learn more about how to help on the CSS migration project page. The Cite footnote markers ("[1]
") are now rendered by Parsoid, and the deprecated CSS is no longer needed. The CSS for backlinks ("mw:referencedBy
") should remain in place for now. This cleanup is expected to cause no visible changes for readers. Please help to remove this code before March 20, after which the development team will do it for you. - When editors embed a file (e.g.
[[File:MediaWiki.png]]
) on a page that is protected with cascading protection, the software will no longer restrict edits to the file description page, only to new file uploads.[17] In contrast, transcluding a file description page (e.g.{{:File:MediaWiki.png}}
) will now restrict edits to the page.[18] - When editors revert a file to an earlier version it will now require the same permissions as ordinarily uploading a new version of the file. The software now checks for 'reupload' or 'reupload-own' rights,[19] and respects cascading protection.[20]
- When administrators are listing pages for deletion with the Nuke tool, they can now also list associated talk pages and redirects for deletion, alongside pages created by the target, rather than needing to manually delete these pages afterwards. [21]
- The previously noted update to Single User Login, which will accommodate browser restrictions on cross-domain cookies by moving login and account creation to a central domain, will now roll out to all users during March and April. The team plans to enable it for all new account creation on Group0 wikis this week. See the SUL3 project page for more details and an updated timeline.
- Since last week there has been a bug that shows some interface icons as black squares until the page has fully loaded. It will be fixed this week. [22]
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Sylheti (
