Misleading title

[edit]

The title of the article not does reflect its current scope. I think a better title would be one which incorporated all types of inscriptions mentioned in the article.JohnmgKing (talk) 10:27, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • @JohnmgKing: True. I suggest "Multilingual inscription". The Commons cat "Archaeological multilingual inscriptions" includes texts with just two or three languages, as does Category:Multilingual texts here on Wikipedia. This article currently uses it more narrowly, excluding inscriptions with four or fewer languages,[a] but this narrower use seems to be more about convenience than a reflection of technical use (afaik). "Multilingual" would seem to be the best choice for a concise common name. The existing section on "multilinguals" could be retitled and reworded as to not clash with the suggested article title. -- Scyrme (talk) 12:10, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ Except Yongning Temple Stele which is listed here as a "multilingual" although it's apparently a quadrilingual text.

New article on "Rosetta stones" of similar utility?

This article here already lists several important examples. Maybe expand on that? Arminden (talk) 14:17, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Have started a section, Multilingual inscription#As means for decipherment, basically a list. A table would be more suitable, especially once the list is expanded. Arminden (talk) 17:49, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
