Manifesto Gallery of Contemporary Arts (Bosnian: Galerija savremene umjetnosti Manifesto; Serbo-Croatian Cyrillic: Галерија савремене умјетности Манифесто), commonly known as Galerija Manifesto, is a contemporary art gallery located in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.[1] Established in October 2021, the gallery functions as a hybrid platform intersecting art market representation and cultural contribution, aiming to provide space and opportunities for the production, presentation, and affirmation of contemporary arts.[2]

History

[edit]

The gallery was founded in response to a perceived lack of initiatives, engagement, and spaces for cultural production in Bosnia and Herzegovina.[3] Its mission is to establish a sustainable and strategic model for contemporary arts production and to create a hybrid cultural space where the community can use art to tackle social and political problems.[2]

The director of the gallery, Benjamin Čengić, has a background in graffiti art and graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo in the department for Production and Management. In 2016, he organized a non-governmental organization called "Obojena Klapa" (Coloured Slate) with the vision of turning the city of Sarajevo into an open-air gallery.[2]

Location and surroundings

[edit]

Galerija Manifesto is situated at Despićeva 3 in Sarajevo, within the Stari Grad municipality. The gallery is located near several notable landmarks, including the National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Museum of Literature and Theater Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.[4] The area is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant arts scene.[5]

Performance art

[edit]
Manifesto concept performance

In addition to visual art exhibitions, Galerija Manifesto has become a notable venue for performance art in Sarajevo. The gallery regularly organizes experimental theatre, conceptual concerts, and performative interventions that blur the lines between music, stage, and installation.[14] These events often incorporate electronic music and interdisciplinary formats, providing a platform for avant-garde and emerging artists.[15][16]

These performances often serve as critical or poetic responses to social and political realities, echoing the gallery's broader commitment to art as a form of civic engagement.[17]

One example includes a series of electronic music events curated under thematic concepts, integrating DJ sets, video installations, and interactive light design within the gallery space.[18]
