The Jewish Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosnian: Muzej Jevreja Bosne i Hercegovine; Serbo-Croatian Cyrillic: Музеј Јевреја Босне и Херцеговине) is a museum located in Sarajevo, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history, culture, and heritage of the Jewish community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is housed in the oldest synagogue in the country, built in 1581.[1]
History
[edit]The building housing the museum, known as the Old Synagogue, was constructed in 1581 by Sephardic Jews who settled in Sarajevo after being expelled from Spain. The synagogue was destroyed by fire in 1679 and again in 1778 but was rebuilt each time. In 1966, after restoration, the building was repurposed as a museum and became part of the Sarajevo Museum.
Exhibitions
[edit]The museum's permanent exhibition chronicles over 400 years of Jewish life in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It includes artifacts such as religious objects, manuscripts, photographs, and traditional clothing.[2] The collection features items from the Ottoman period through the Austro-Hungarian era, World War II, and the post-war period. Notably, the museum houses a collection of Ladino and other Jewish books, some printed over 200 to 300 years ago.[3][4]
Architecture
[edit]The Old Synagogue is considered one of the most beautiful exhibition spaces in the former Yugoslavia. Its architecture reflects a blend of Sephardic and local styles, creating a unique and historically significant structure.[5]
Significance
[edit]The museum serves as a testament to the enduring presence and contributions of the Jewish community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also highlights the community's experiences during significant historical events, including the Holocaust and the Bosnian War.[6][7]
Visitor information
[edit]The museum is located at Velika Avlija bb in Sarajevo. It is open to visitors throughout the week, with varying hours. For the most current information on opening hours and admission fees, visitors are encouraged to consult the museum's official website.[8]
