Walters Group is a Canadian family-owned structural steel fabrication and erection company based in Hamilton, Ontario.[1] Established in 1956, it provides steel design, fabrication and construction services for large commercial and industrial projects across Canada and the United States.[2]

History

[edit]

The company began in 1956 as Walters Welding and Iron Works , a 24×30-foot ornamental iron shop founded by Walter Sr. Koppelaar on Upper Wellington Street in Hamilton.[2] By the late 1970s it had pivoted to structural steel and relocated to a larger facility on Rymal Road East.[2] During the 2000s the firm expanded in and outside Ontario, opening plants in Southern Ontario and taking minority ownership of North Carolina-based Dave Steel Company in 2017.[3]

Operations

[edit]

As of 2025 Walters Group operates seven fabrication and erection facilities in Canada and the United States, with a combined shop space of roughly 800,000 ft².[1] The company uses 3-D modelling, robotic assembly and “model-to-truck” digital workflows to coordinate engineering, detailing and field erection.[4]

Notable projects

[edit]

TD Terrace (160 Front Street West)

[edit]

A 47-storey, 240 m office tower in Toronto that reused a six-storey heritage façade. Walters supplied and erected ≈12,000 t of structural steel and 1 million ft² of metal deck; the tower is targeting LEED Platinum.[5][4]

One Bloor West (The One)

[edit]

One Bloor West is a 91-storey mixed-use tower under construction at Yonge and Bloor in Toronto. Walters engineered, fabricated and erected the hybrid steel-and-concrete exoskeleton.[6]

Algoma Steel Electric-Arc Furnace

[edit]

In 2022 Walters won the contract to build the main structure for Algoma Steel’s electric-arc furnace in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, part of a project expected to cut corporate greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent.[7]

A 902-ft (275 m) office tower at 401 Ninth Avenue in New York City. Walters supplied and installed ≈55,000 t of structural steel, coordinating lifts above 13 active rail tracks.[8]

10 World Trade

[edit]

A 17-storey, 555,000 ft² mixed-use building in Boston’s Seaport District. Walters detailed and erected ≈9,500 t of steel for the curved façade and long-span arches. The development targets LEED Gold, WELL Platinum and SITES Gold.[9][10]

Leadership

[edit]

Peter Kranendonk has served as chief executive officer since 2019, succeeding longtime president Walter Koppelaar, who became chairman.[1] The firm completed a full acquisition of Dave Steel Company in 2024 to extend fabrication capacity in the southeastern United States.[3]
