Camden Luke Bonsu-Stewart (born 6 June 2004), known professionally as Camden Stewart, is a British composer and pianist. He became known for his public piano performances in London, which have been widely circulated on social media. His work combines classical, ambient, and cinematic influences, often presented in spontaneous public settings to broaden the reach of classical music.[1][2][3]

Career

[edit]

Stewart began sharing public piano performances on social media in 2022. These videos, often filmed in public locations across London, feature original classical compositions and improvisations. A 2022 performance with pianist Karim Kamar at St Pancras Station received media attention for its spontaneous collaboration.[4]

In November 2023, Stewart performed at the unveiling of Burlington Arcade's Christmas lights, an event hosted by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.[5]

As of March 2025, Stewart had amassed over 800,000 followers on Instagram and nearly 600,000 subscribers on YouTube.[1]

Viral incident and public reaction

[edit]

In March 2025, a video capturing Stewart’s public piano performance gained widespread attention. During the performance, a bystander directed verbal abuse toward him. Stewart continued playing, maintaining composure throughout the incident. The video prompted public discussions around racism, public space, and the experiences of Black classical musicians. The incident was reported by several outlets including NewsOne, Black News, Bossip, and the Black Information Network (iHeart).[1][2][6][7]
