Project notes
[edit]I just created this wikiproject, after several months of contemplating doing so. I hope everyone working on hurricane articles will get involved. I went ahead and wrote a bunch of guidelines, basically based on current practices...naturally since this is something I just wrote it doesn't necessarily represent community consensus and needs to be discussed. That discussion should probably go here for now...although eventually we may make these pages a little more structured. For a general TODO list, see the "tasks" item on the project page. Costliest season tables
[edit]I forget whether it's been discussed or not on the project page but lately several editors have been adding unsourced records to articles stating which hurricane seasons (and individual tropical cyclones) were the xth-costliest. While the Atlantic basin usually generates enough public interest that we'll get a reliable source stating which tropical cyclone seasons are the most destructive, the other basins usually aren't afforded this type of attention and I think part of the confusion is coming from having tables like the List of Costliest Pacific Hurricane Seasons in the 2024 Pacific hurricane season page. I'm wondering if these tables violate WP:SYNTH since simply adding up the total damages of the storms and adding them to the page is covered by WP:CALC but then using the tables to say which seasons were the costliest isn't. JayTee⛈️ 21:45, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- I agree that they probably violate synth, unless we have specific sources saying a season is the Xth deadliest/costliest. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:31, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
Open FAC, anyone available for a review?
[edit]Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Hurricane Emily (2005)/archive1 - I'm working on getting a featured topic for the 2005 AHS, and there's currently an open FAC for Hurricane Emily, basically the Beryl before Beryl last year. I'd appreciate the reviews so the FAC doesn't get archived. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:11, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
Gulf of Mexico/America
[edit]Question as the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will be upon us in a few months: How shall we refer to the Gulf? Drdpw (talk) 16:53, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- The way we always have. Wikipedia is an international website visited by people around the world, and it's important to keep terminology as non-biased as possible. I don't want to use the wording bestowed upon us by some convicted felon who happens to be the US president, and don't care at all that he issued an executive order. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:55, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- It doesn't even look like the NWS is following the order. [1] ✶Quxyz✶ 23:54, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- Nevermind, they changed it to GoA. ✶Quxyz✶ 18:02, 13 February 2025 (UTC)

- In the same way as we handle the South China Sea? Jason Rees (talk) 16:56, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- Let's not let politics intersect with weather any more than we have to. 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 20:29, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- Our article is at Gulf of Mexico; therefore we should link to Gulf of Mexico. Should the editors of that article decide it should be named differently, then we should follow suit. Til then, it's a non-issue. --21:22, 12 February 2025 (UTC) Golbez (talk) 21:22, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- So, even if NWS/NHC or reliable US-based secondary sources use "Gulf of America," we will nonetheless use "Gulf of Mexico," is that what we are saying? Drdpw (talk) 21:25, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
- Correct. The whole body of water was never known as the "Gulf of America", even with the executive order. Using "Gulf of America" shows more fealty to a convicted felon who happens to be president, rather than following any kind of accuracy amongst neutral sources, and especially when following the long established precedent of WP:COMMONNAME. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:30, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
- Correct. We only care about their specific words if we're reporting specifically on their words (i.e. a paragraph or article about a warning bulletin, like the infamous Katrina disaster bulletin). Again, all that matters is: If we aren't quoting them specifically, then we should use the name of the article, and presently, that's Gulf of Mexico. That can change. It hasn't yet. This is still a non-issue. --Golbez (talk) 21:34, 13 February 2025 (UTC)
