Project notes

[edit]

I just created this wikiproject, after several months of contemplating doing so. I hope everyone working on hurricane articles will get involved. I went ahead and wrote a bunch of guidelines, basically based on current practices...naturally since this is something I just wrote it doesn't necessarily represent community consensus and needs to be discussed. That discussion should probably go here for now...although eventually we may make these pages a little more structured. For a general TODO list, see the "tasks" item on the project page. I have nominated Effects of Hurricane Isabel in Delaware for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" in regards to the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here.

Old colour scheme in typhoon map

[edit]

Dunno where to report this, but File:Cora 1966 track.png seems to use the old colour scheme (sans violet) Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 07:51, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That’s the case for a lot of older tracks. We only have so many editors with the track map software. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 17:51, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Damages with Cyclone Garance

[edit]

I have looked to the references and I cannot find any mention of Cyclone Garance having costed $940 millions in damages. Could someone provide a credible reference for that???

Pierre cb (talk) 12:23, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It's in the lead for Garance's article, the reference is cited to AoN. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:46, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but this 940 million is for potential economic lost. I am not sure this qualify as a reality. In the same link the estimate damage cost is 200 million Euro (226 million $US). Pierre cb (talk) 16:16, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We use AoN often. Not sure where you're getting the US$226 million. On page 13, it says "French public-sector reinsurer (CRR) put estimated insured losses between €160-€200 million ($173-216 million), with the total economic losses standing much higher." And then on page 16, it says the "economic loss" is $940 million. Not "potential", just the economic loss. Similarly, we use the total from the same reference for Cyclone Alfred, which on page 17 says $820 million in economic losses. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:37, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
200 million euro = 226 $US. One the other hand, I found an updated evaluation of 248 million euro of France24. I think a range between that value (281 million $US) and 940 is in order, not a definite value. Pierre cb (talk) 17:50, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
But the 200 euros was insured, and the $940 million is a damage total. Damage totals are usually higher than that. The NHC sometimes mentions how they double the insured damage to get the damage total. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 19:58, 5 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
