Remove The floor is lava  5, possible swap for Imaginary friend

[edit]

This is a game that a lot of kids play but it hasn't been entrenched in culture as much as the other inclusions on this list. It is not even a well-defined 'game' as there is typically no concrete objective, it's just a thing some kids do. It is also a fairly recent game as it seems to have originated in the 1930s with the introduction of living rooms populated with furniture. I assume it was added because it was a somewhat popular meme a few years back and there was a Netflix show with the same name but the game's popularity was short-lived after that [1]. Hard to justify having this when we don't have more established games like Simon Says. I would rather have Imaginary friend which is dually notable in child's play and developmental psychology. High-Importance in Wikiproject Psychology and more average pageviews than The floor is lava even factoring in the spikes from the release of the Netflix show.

  1. Oppose remove the floor is lava. I have seen kids from three different cultures play this game, at different times, wouldn't be where I'd start cuts. The concrete objective is to be the last one who doesn't touch the lava, at least in my experience as a player/observer of the game. Sometimes, you become a lava monster and the objective is to make everyone else lava monsters. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 19:11, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Could support a swap. We are over-quota in this section and car companies aren't where I'd look first to fill any gaps. We represent luxury car companies already through BMW  5 and Mercedes-Benz  5/Mercedes-Benz Group  5 and these two brands take the top 2 slots in luxury car sales. Audi is 3rd. That being said, Audi's sales are very impressive for a luxury car company and units sold last year even exceeded standard car company sales such as Renault  5. Also, having a large number of interwikis is a supporting factor for inclusion on VA5 but doesn't provide a guarantee. David Woodard has 333 interwikis but have you heard of him? Art and culture law  5 seems to be covering a number of relatively unrelated things which are already covered in other places, and only has 4 other language versions. Compared to other articles in this section, it also has fewer pageviews, around 10 per day. I think Legal professional privilege is more important. It has about 30 pageviews per day and 11 other language versions. I do see that Attorney–client privilege has 3 times as many pageviews, but that article is restricted to the USA. Above, Incense  5 was nominated. This surprised me as incense is extremely important across cultures, and in multiple religions. I suspect this is Western bias, specifically American bias, because we don't tend to use incense quite as much as other cultures. I have gone through and found a few key pages related to incense that have not been included, and think they should be added.

Entry criticized in a related discussion above by @LaukkuTheGreit and Iostn:. I concur this is a low vitality concept - NA as a continent doesn't really have much of a common culture. What there is, is much more niche than European or Asian or African, or, heck, pretty much any other region. Which is whyu this article is just a list of related topics, rather than a proper prose article like other contintental culture ones. I assume it was added as part of a batch add of similar topics, but now it's time for it to go (you can also consider this as part of the proposed swap above, for the culture of the USA). Add Culture of major countries

[edit]

Following above discussions at #Culture of Mexico and #Culture of the United States, I looked at what we actually list at Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Level/5/Society_and_social_sciences/Culture#Culture_by_region and... it's just Culture of Japan  5 and Culture of Australia  5 (which possibly doubles as a regional entry). Sigh. Yes, really. No other countries, jus some regions (contients+Polynesian culture) and few odd concepts (err, The sea in culture, really? I don't think so... expect removal proposal soon). PS. Just in case someone wonders: we list Culture of Buddhism and Islamic culture here, while Christian culture  5 is lised under "Philosophy and religion". I think Buddhism and Islamic should be moved from 'by region' to where the Christian one is listed. Anyway, to country adds. I looked at Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Level/3#Countries and subjectively choose these countries which IMHO had some major influence on world's culture, past or present, comparable to US or Mexico we seem to support above, and Japan, present here (sorry, Canada, etc.). Plus Greece which did not make it to V3?? Numerically, there's some sys bias here, but region- and population wise, China, India, Brazil and Russia do cover a lot of the world; Africa and Middle East get some concept coverage, so... shrug. IMHO Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Level/5/Society_and_social_sciences/Culture#Educational_institutions is way too bloated, with ~200 entries - I'd cut it to 100. Many entries there are strictly national. I haven't made up my mind yet, but is one of the largest comprehensive university systems in the world not a claim of significance? QuicoleJR (talk) 15:13, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@QuicoleJR It sounds nice but what does it mean? What is a "comprehensive systems of universities"? comprehensive system, comprehensive university system - all red links. There is the concept of a university system, but is that it? The claim is unreferenced. In the body there's a semi-referenced (no ref for that sentence, some refs a few sentences later that I did not check) claim that it "is the world's fifth-largest university", which seems to be confirmed by List of largest universities and university networks by enrollment. But #2, #3 and #4 from that list are not at V5, so either we add National University, Bangladesh, Anadolu University and California Community Colleges, or this is not a strong claim for vitality. And while a teriary education system that has million+ students sounds impressive, is it vital? I'd rather consider stuff like Higher education in the United States or (for this very case) Higher education in Iran (not a VA) rather than what is, effectively, a company. In fact, I may suggest a bit later to nuke a few or few dozen of unversities, and replace them with the "higher education in Fooland" articles. Or even Education in the United States. Come to think of it, IMHO we should be prioritizing such overview articles rather than the ones about individual schools (businesses); most of which are not very famous and are only know to locals and experts. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 06:06, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese university. The only thing that makes it slightly vital is that it is a member of the C9 League, but I don't think that's enough, not yet - maybe once C9 League is as known as the Ivy League. For now, it is just a regional university that is unknown outside China. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 14:38, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Add education of Fooland articles

[edit]

Recently we discovered a gap in the form of Culture of Fooland articles, and above we are adding a number. Another one seems to be related to the field of education. (And I have a feeling it's just a tip of the iceberg). Anyway, I think we have too many higher education institutions listed (Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Level/5/Society_and_social_sciences/Culture#Educational_institutions is way too bloated, with ~200 entries). I think we should try to cut it to let's say a 100, and use the freed up 100 spots to add a dozen or two, or even three, overviews of education by country and region, just like above we are adding the culture overviews. I mean, if we add culture of the United States, for example, why not education in the United States or higher education in the United States? IMHO such overviews are much more vital than entries on individual institutions (some of which are just companies), and many of which have little impact or recognizability outside its small region (sometimes, province, not even a country) and educators/scholars (heck, I am an educator and researcher, and I don't recognize most of the universities we list). For now, my adds are similar to the culture adds, which is also similar to the list of countries listed at V3, but with a second take on which countries have multiple tertiary institutions listed at V5. I will make comments in various sections above for the adds. Feel free to propose others. Removals (which can be considered swap should follow soon, feel free to help gut the listed units from 200 to 100 or less :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:46, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

We list 3 Russian unis. Add two overviews, cut 2+ unis later. Higher education in Russia is just a redirect, so not proposing it. With just 3 unis, it probably is a borderline case, despite Russia's historical importance (but it was never an education leader... I digress). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:46, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Would not support outside level 5, but I think it is at least vital enough for level 5. I have made some nominations on level 4 related to this.

The article being a mess isn't really a case for excluding it. Vital articles are, in part, articles that we want to focus attention on cleaning up. If it's vital but a mess, it should be included to bring attention to it. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 05:31, 19 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt it is one of 50,000 most important things on Earth. I'm sure there are many people who never heard of this. And the others have happily forgotten.
This whole bunch of proposals looks like something coming from a student. :-) --Moscow Connection (talk) 16:55, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I mean, I spent a long time as a student, but am currently on the other side of the podium. That said, "important" is relative, and I don't find a lot of things we include important at all. We have a huge bias towards entertainment and pop culture comparatively that I would start with if you don't think seminars are vital. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 02:04, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What I want to say is that this thing doesn't "translate" well to other languages. (Yes, in Russian it's "seminar" – sounds fancy. But those "Russian seminars" can just be called "practice" or something. The Russian seminars are "a part of a course of study", which the English article says they are not.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 03:24, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And this article says: "In some European universities, a seminar may be a large lecture course". So, basically, it admits that the term "seminar" stands for different things in different languages and different colleges/universities.
There's a good chance that all these 43 articles in different languages talk about different things that just happen to be called the same. --Moscow Connection (talk) 03:29, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, this is the English language Wikipedia, so the English use would be the main thing we care about. Obviously other language Wikipedia projects will have different words for concepts. I'm not sure if Russia or any other country has equivalent format of class, but we list several U.S. Universities and I'd think this concept is more important then the singular schools. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 03:46, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, "those people" in the Russian Wikipedia are under impression that what we are creating here is some kind of a list of articles every Wikipedia should have.
(They haven't started with the 50,000 list yet. Lucky for them. But at 10,000 they actually had to deal with something that didn't translate to Russian well or even at all.)
I mean, we should list universal concepts here. Which "seminars" may be and may be not, I'm not sure. --Moscow Connection (talk) 09:50, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Really? That is an interesting perspective, but that is not one of the stated goals of this project. If you look at the main page Wikipedia:Vital articles, it states "The five nested vital article levels are meant to give direction to the prioritization of improvements of English Wikipedia articles (e.g. which articles to bring to WP:GA and WP:FA status), to provide a measurement of quality of overall English Wikipedia (e.g. what proportion of the most important articles are at GA and FA status), and to serve as a centralized watchlist of English Wikipedia's most important articles. Unlike the list of articles every Wikipedia should have, they are tailored to the English Wikipedia and are actively maintained by the dedicated WikiProject Vital Articles." There is a separate project for what you're describing. I think it would be appropriate for other language projects to have their own separate vital articles. It just isn't really possible to work around not only concepts, but translations of those concepts, across ALL languages. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 18:00, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Now I see I was mistaken. The Russian 10,000 project (ru:Проект:Мириада) links the Wikimedia list and not the Enwiki Level 4 list. But wasn't the Wikimedia list taken from here originally? It does look similar.
And I thought that there would eventually be a 50,000-articles list, and it would be created by taking this Enwiki one. --Moscow Connection (talk) 21:40, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry didn't see this question. I don't know the answer. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 04:43, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Now when I'm thinking of it, in Russia seminars are like usual lessons at secondary school. You have a teacher who gives you something to do. You need to do "exercises" or give answers to questions on paper or verbally. And the teacher evaluates your work. And, unlike during a lecture, you can interact with him. --Moscow Connection (talk) 09:50, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A "lecture" is a "lecture" in every language. It's a universal concept. (It even says "lecture" in its name. /j) I highly doubt that there are countries where lectures are seminars or labs or PE or whatever. But a "seminar"... --Moscow Connection (talk) 09:50, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"Well, this is the English language Wikipedia, so the English use would be the main thing we care about."
– If the "Seminar" article is about the English use, that it should be renamed to something like "Seminars in the United States and the Commonwealth of Nations". --Moscow Connection (talk) 09:58, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, this "Seminar" article actually says that "in some European universities" a seminar is a lecture. I forgot. --Moscow Connection (talk) 10:04, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Vital list is on English Wikipedia but it should not be affected by WP:SYSBIAS. A topic that's important only for US, for example, is not very vital (it may be - but no more or less than a topic important only for another large country - like Russia). Of course, given importance of US in geopolitics and culture, many American topics will be more vital than Russian. But let's keep SYSBIAS in mind and remember that the vital list should not be biased. It's international, not English. Just like Wikipedia itself. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:26, 19 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The English Wikipedia article is undeveloped and repeats "the term 'seminar'", "the term 'seminar'" instead of just saying "seminar", as if not being sure whether the word and the concept it represents are universal. Moscow Connection (talk) 17:14, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: ping User:Nihil novi. Any philosophical concepts you think should be added that are not? See Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Level/5/Philosophy_and_religion, which lists, among others, Perfection  5 --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:35, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A Wikipedia article describes the concept of "Fatalism" -- in its various mutations -- as "a belief and philosophical doctrine", so it seems a legitimate addition.
At "Philosophy Level 5 Vital Articles", I find "Perfection" listed under "Aesthetics" -- whereas in the Wikipedia "Perfection" article (based on philosopher Wladyslaw Tatarkiewicz's 1976 book On Perfection) the concept of "Perfection" subsumes "Aesthetics" as well as "Ethics", "Ontology", "Theology", and several other disciplines.
Tatarkiewicz's 383-page book A History of Six Ideas: an Essay in Aesthetics (1980), like "Philosophy Level 5 Vital Articles", includes "Beauty" and "Mimesis", but additionally "Art", "Form", "Creativity", and "The Aesthetic Experience".
Not being a trained philosopher, I'm not sure how one might put all these jigsaw-puzzle pieces together into a coherent picture. Nihil novi (talk) 07:57, 21 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Phobia Proposals

[edit]

Given that Phobia  4 is Level 4, I think we can afford to add specific examples at Level 5 (Well, technically homophobia and transphobia are listed, but these are forms of social bigotry/discrimination and not phobias in the medical sense. We do list Social anxiety disorder which used to be known as "social phobia", but that term is outdated and now it's usually not considered a phobia in the common sense). These two proposals are the ones that are the most commonly known by name and among the most common.

Why aren't ethnicities listed?

This is a Pandora's Box, Ethnicities are so diverse and ambiguous it is impossible to fully capture ALL ethnicities. Check Category:Ethnic groups to see how much it will explode the list. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 04:26, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's a balancing act, IMO. In many cases, it makes much more sense to list an ethnicity than a region. In the African region articles you can see a lot of bare-boned proposed articles, whereas the appropriate ethnicity articles have much more information and indeed appear to cover a much more cohesive topic. J947edits 06:52, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
List of contemporary ethnic groups is pretty extensive. If we add one, I'd say we need to add all of them, with some minor exceptions. Failing an all or nothing approach to ethnicities would open the door for accusations of encouraging literal supremacy (How can we say one ethnic group is vital, but not another?). Add several military concepts

[edit]

Military concepts are an important part of our society, for better or worse. We include 113 under the section "War and military," which for something as important as war and military seems like a dramatic under representation. These are all fairly basic concepts, and if you don't know what they are just check the article. These have had impacts on popular culture, the civilian lexicon, and influenced history pretty profoundly.

Admittedly might be a bit more of a literary concept then real life but for example: Kijong-dong in North Korea. You can see it used in discussion periodically, often changed to "Potemkin Military" or "Potemkin Army", for example, Conclusion: A Potemkin Army Russia's Potemkin Army. Essentially, making it look like you have a big functional army when it is really a shell for display purposes only. Put it last because conceptually wasn't sure it belonged. Add the remaining 3 Vedas

[edit]

Specifically, add the Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda.

We have 5 religious texts at VA3, and one of them is the Vedas  3, which are the fundamental texts of Hinduism and maybe the oldest scripture practiced today. In the case of the Bible  3, we list all 59 bible books (well, bundling together the Twelve Minor Prophets) at VA5. Well, it turns out there are only 4 Vedas, and yet we currently only list 1 at VA5. The articles themselves describe the Vedas as having a large influence in the Indian subcontinent, such as in Indian classical music  4 and the Ayurveda  4 traditional medical system. I struggle to see how excluding these would not be systemic bias, given that we give 10 times as many slots to the central Christian text. They each have around 60 interwikis.

What Universal Music Group originated from. Well, ultimately originated; there is a very complicated history regarding this label that I don't have time to fully discuss. Short answer, for a period there were two Decca Records, the original British label and its American offshoot, that operated independently from each other. But since Universal Music Group (American Decca) bought out PolyGram (British Decca), there is now a single Decca Records again. This is going to be the only nominee founded as a sub-label. I'll admit, the only reason I'm not combining the 19 vital people I was able to link to Epic with Columbia like I have for the other sub-labels is Michael Jackson  3. I want to include a label linked to a level 3 musician, and this was the best candidate. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven obviously predate recorded music, while I ultimately decided that the labels Louis Armstrong and The Beatles are associated with (Okeh and Parlophone/Apple) were not worthy enough to be discussed. Besides Michael, the other 18 are: Gloria Estefan  5, Delta Goodrem  5, Cyndi Lauper  5, Jennifer Lopez  5, George Michael  5, Shakira  5, George Jones  5, Tammy Wynette  5, Donovan  5, Ricardo Arjona  5, Sade (band)  5, Sly and the Family Stone  5, Luther Vandross  5, Stevie Ray Vaughan  5, Jeff Beck  5, Pearl Jam  5, Korn  5, and Jack Black  5 (via Tenacious D).

Changes to Economy of major countries / regions

[edit]

Following #Add Culture of major countries, here are suggestions for economy tweaks. Comparing Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Level/5/Society_and_social_sciences/Culture#Culture_by_region (30 entries) and [[3]] (33 entries), there are some discrepancies - such as, no regions in economy. Now, not everything should be mirrored (arguably, some countries are culturally significant, while their economies are of little importance to the world or even their regions; and vice versa). Here are my suggestions for changes, starting with adding economies by regions (continents) - it makes little sense to have VA for Culture of Africa, for example, but not Economy of Africa. Other than that, at this point I only have one suggestion for country-level addition. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:51, 18 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Everyone can agree that this article is sufficiently broad enough to be included, so the main possible concern is that the article must self-destruct by being too broad or otherwise poorly defined (hence, why Everything  5 is only VA5 despite its impressive scope). But this is not the case here, as the article specifically collects perspectives over history about how humans are psychologically/spiritually, apart from the subjective influences of a specific culture.

This wouldn't look out of place at level 4, or even level 3 at a push, I'm sure it's at least level 5. At the moment we list things that look like they could a subtopic of independence like Independence referendum before independence itself. The article exists in 119 languages if I count correct, and has 1.7 million page views in last 10 years. [5] In the general area of law and politics we list things like Law of Cuba, Law of Poland, Law of Afghanistan which exist in one, four and two other languages, the concept of independence seams at least as important as those concepts, if not more. There is some overlap with liberty but that is level 3 at the moment, and many level 5 articles have some overlap with level 3 concepts, especially in society and politics.

I don't much care for the "______ of country" articles as is, because every time we include another set we open the door for adding the articles for EVERY country to the list. The three examples chosen seem a bit random as well. We could include Racism in Russia, Racism in France, and Racism in the United Kingdom if we're listing out the UN Security council, but throwing Germany into the mix opens the door for literally every other country. The Khoekhoe people, along with the San people  4, are considered the earliest inhabitants of Southern Africa and are genetically distinct from other human populations. They contrast with most of southern and central Africa which is inhabited by Bantu peoples  4. Unlike the Bantu groups (such as Zulu people  4, Xhosa people, and Tswana people) who were traditionally farmers, the Khoekhoe were traditionally herders and the San were hunter-gatherers. (Maybe they still are today, I'm not sure). I considered proposing Khoisan instead, which comprises both Khoekhoe and San people  4, but some of what I've read suggests the differences between these two groups are larger than their similarities.
