Thank you for many recent quality articles, and today especially for Mount Edziza volcanic complex, "about a group of volcanoes in British Columbia, Canada. It includes Mount Edziza, one of the highest volcanoes in Canada. The volcanic complex has been an area of volcanic activity for at least 7.4 million years, most recently in the last 2,000 years. It is also the most active volcanic system in Canada, having erupted more than 29 times during the Holocene. It also remains as one of the best-studied volcanic centres in northwestern British Columbia."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:02, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Cerro Panizos/archive1
[edit]Greetings, since you took part in the review at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Mount Hudson/archive1 I was wondering if you had any thoughts on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Cerro Panizos/archive1, especially the disagreement between me and David Fuchs. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:26, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe if you would have helped me promote the Volcanism of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex article to FA but I didn't get any support from you so I'll hold my thoughts. Don't expect help from me if you're not going to help me as well. Volcanoguy 15:22, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, sorry about not giving a full review to that one, I must have forgotten it. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 06:22, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- I might renominate it in a few weeks and when I do I will ping the users who were involved in the last FAC. Currently working on a draft for the Big Raven Plateau article in my sandbox. Volcanoguy 22:06, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Jo-Jo Eumerus: Let me know if you need any help with the current FAC. I'm not sure if my support in the previous FAC for Cerro Panizos counts? Volcanoguy 20:17, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- Dunno about how it works vis-a-vis FAC procedure; @FAC coordinators: ? That said, I plan to bring Socompa to FAC next if that helps. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 05:59, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment at the tectonic plate lowercasing RM, now relisted
[edit]Thanks, and the RM at the talk page of Eurasian Plate was relisted on the 15th, so not much time left. Logic and commonsense would keep the uppercasing on the 90+ plates under discussion, but lowercasers are using the casing guideline, which some of us have countered with WP:IAR and WP:COMMONSENSE which is under fairly intense discussion. If you agree with this approach, or even have more comments, your additional participation may be useful. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:24, 18 October 2024 (UTC)

- Hi, and good points. With such an asked-for major change in how the encyclopedia cases the largest named objects on Earth, properly uppercased since the early 2000's (and uppercased by other encyclopedia's, such as Britannica), it seems the discussion would include many more people. Volcanism of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex scheduled for TFA
[edit]This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 2025. Please check that the article needs no amendments. Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 2025, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/January 2025. Please keep an eye on that page, as notifications of copy edits to or queries about the draft blurb may be left there by user:JennyOz, who assists the coordinators by reviewing the blurbs, or by others. I also suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from two days before it appears on the Main Page. Thanks, and congratulations on your work! SchroCat (talk) 11:21, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

Thank you today for Volcanism of the Mount Edziza volcanic complex, "about volcanism of a volcanic complex in British Columbia, Canada, that has been erupting episodically for at least the last 7.4 million years. I'm renominating it for FA because there was no consensus for promotion in the last FAC, not to mention there were incomplete reviews. As I've explained in the previous FAC, the reason this article cites Souther a lot is because he's the only geologist to have studied the Mount Edziza volcanic complex in detail, not because the article isn't well-researched which is 1c of the featured article criteria. Most volcanoes in Canada are not well-studied due to their remote locations; Canada also doesn't have a lot of volcanologists."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:07, 13 January 2025 (UTC)

Creek versus River?
[edit]Hi, Volcanoguy. Your recent edits to both categories (e.g. Category:Creeks of the Sierra Nevada (United States)) and articles (e.g., Oak Creek Canyon) appear to be making a distinction between creeks and rivers. Are you going purely by the name? I don't think there is any well-established technical distinction between the two types of flowing water bodies. Because of this, I'm unsure that "Creek"ness is a defining characteristic of these objects: would a creek almost always be referred to as a "creek" in reliable sources (outside the name), or would they also use "stream" or "river"? Something to consider. — hike395 (talk) 17:15, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- Per stream: "In Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States, a (narrow) stream that is smaller than a river; a minor tributary of a river; a brook." Volcanoguy 17:17, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- That is the dictionary definition of creek, yes. But to create a category structure for creeks (versus streams or rivers), it needs to be a defining characteristic of the topic, see also WP:NONDEF and WP:DEFINING. Because the distinction between creeks and rivers is blurry, using it as the basis of categorization is questionable. — hike395 (talk) 17:23, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- That claim is backed by 5 sources in the article. Volcanoguy 17:24, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not sure which claim you're referring to? I'm not disputing the dictionary definition. I'm trying to figure out whether "creek"ness is a defining characteristic of these kind of streams. — hike395 (talk) 17:26, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- I did find this discussion from 2016: before 2016, there were separate categories for "streams" and "rivers", and the consensus was to combine them. The discussion did consider the distinction between "streams" and "rivers". — hike395 (talk) 17:38, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- And here is a discussion from 2015 on a similar topic, that has links back to even older discussions in 2008 and 2011 at WT:WikiProject Rivers.
- Given that this was discussed (albeit a long time ago), I think it would be worthwhile to bring it up again, perhaps at WT:WikiProject Rivers? — hike395 (talk) 17:48, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- I wasn't aware of those discussions. I've always found it strange how creeks are categorized with rivers since they don't exactly mean the same thing. Volcanoguy 17:49, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- I don't think it's unreasonable: imo, it's in the "grey zone" where it might be ok. But I suspect we need some centralized discussion. Would you like to start a discussion at WT:WikiProject Rivers? Or should I? — hike395 (talk) 18:02, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- You can start the discussion at WT:WikiProject Rivers if you like. I should have started a discussion about this before I started creating categories for creeks, but without knowing about the previous discussions I didn't think it was a big deal. Volcanoguy 18:11, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
- Upon reflection, I think it would be better to bring it up at CfD, because if people do want to merge it, we would have to go through the discussion twice. I'll figure out how to do a mass CfD and then notify WikiProject Rivers. — hike395 (talk) 01:38, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
- If the creek categories were to be merged into the river categories I think there should be a discussion about whether or not the river categories should be renamed. Watercourse would be a great alternative to avoid the issue of brooks, creeks and streams not being rivers. It also avoids the English variant issue. Category:Watercourses already exists as the parent category of Category:Water streams, which is a parent category of Category:Rivers among others. Volcanoguy 02:12, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
- OK. I think we need to workshop this a bit: I'll post something to WT:WikiProject Rivers and we'll see if we can get consensus about (a) whether to merge and (b) if so, what to merge it to. — hike395 (talk) 11:14, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
