Broken syntax

[edit]

This edit introduced a syntax error. It appears that |nolink=on should have been changed to |link=no. The same error may have been introduced in other articles. — BarrelProof (talk) 20:08, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The edit was successful. I was testing Monkbot/task 20 code which has a specific task: convert templates to langx. Nothing more.
None of lang-ga, lang-sco-ulster, or any of the other now deleted templates knew anything about |nolink=; it was not, is not, a supported parameter. Just the other day I updated Module:Lang so that emits an error message when the template call includes parameters that are not supported. Before the update lang-ga, lang-sco-ulster, and langx silently ignored unknown parameters; langx no longer ignores unknown parameters so now, long after my test edit, you are seeing the result of that update.
If you do not want the language names linked, use the correct, supported, parameter. See Template:Langx § Parameters.
Trappist the monk (talk) 20:35, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have no opinion on whether the language names should be linked and I had nothing to do with its template usage; indeed I had never edited it. I simply noticed that something had caused the template usage in the article to become clearly broken in its appearance. Perhaps it would have been best to remove any unrecognised parameters when making your change, so that this would not happen. — BarrelProof (talk) 22:00, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps it would have been best [if an editor did not add] any unrecognised parameters. Removing unknown parameters was not within bot's remit. The decision to emit error messages when unknown parameters were detected came after the bot had done its work, upped stumps, and retired to the pavilion. Since the advent of the error trapping, Category:Lang and lang-xx template errors has acquired ~1,100 articles that need fixing; a paltry number compared to the ~600,000 pages that the bot edited when converting to langx.
Trappist the monk (talk) 22:59, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BarrelProof: In general, bots should not remove unsupported parameters prior to analysis. Parameters that are typos, for example, should generally be fixed rather than removed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:11, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Langx romanization

[edit]

Hi there. I have noticed a certain error with the langx template. It seems previously "r" was sometimes used for the romanization parameter but the bot did not change this and this results in an error with the new template. See for example this version of an article. Mellk (talk) 07:05, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not an error in langx but is an error in how that specific langx template was written. |r= has never been a supported parameter in langx or its predecessor templates (in this case lang-ru). Likely the editor who made this edit confused lang-ru with lang-rus which, like lang-zh, supports unique single-character parameter names.
The error message is correct. You notice it now because of a recent update to Module:Lang. When unsupported parameters are used in any lang or langx template, Module:Lang emits an error message.
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:07, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see, thanks for the correction. I assumed that the same parameter in lang-rus was also valid. Is there a way to easily find other pages that have the same issue in terms of unsupported parameters? Mellk (talk) 14:14, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This search.
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:30, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, thanks. Mellk (talk) 14:38, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have also noticed a similar error message with IPA e.g. Eugene Onegin (opera). Mellk (talk) 09:25, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That one is your fault. At this edit on 2024-07-20, you changed lang-rus to lang-ru. On 2024-10-20, Monkbot/task 20 replaced ... with ru. When the templates were changed, Module:Lang (the engine behind lang-ru and langx) did not have code to check for unknown parameters so in both cases simply ignored |Ru-Evgeny_Onegin.ogg. Code for unknown-parameter-checking was added to Module:Lang 2024-11-14 and that is why your edit caused the error message.
In lang-rus, the supported positional parameters are:
 1. Russian text
 2. transliteration
 3. IPA
 4. audio file
In lang-ru, the supported positional parameters were:
 1. Russian text
 2. transliteration
 3. translation
So, he asked, why did you convert lang-rus to lang-ru?
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:09, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea. I would have used the IPA template instead. Oversight, I guess. Mellk (talk) 16:25, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lang span question

[edit]

I'm attemping to get lang to be the engine behind most of Wikt-lang's work. I was wondering what is the correct way to place the span tag. Around the entire link, or just around the text being displayed to the user?

 • <span title="Ancient Greek (to 1453)-language text"><span lang="grc">δημοκρᾰτῐ́ᾱ</span></span>
 • <span title="Ancient Greek (to 1453)-language text"><span lang="grc">δημοκρᾰτῐ́ᾱ</span></span>

Macedonian Wikipedia DOI numbers issue

[edit]

Dear Trappist the monk, the Macedonian Wikipedia uses the English modules and any change in those may cause the Macedonian version to stop running, right now we have an issue as I can identify with the DOI numerals which crash the function and report errors in the coding. As I'm not a coder and we don't have the technical know how to fix this issue will you be kind to spare some of your precious time to see if there is a solution to this issue. The whole Macedonian community will be grateful. As an example I will point you out to this article on the Macedonian Wikipedia mk:Мајкелсон-Морлиев обид. Thank you for any help, have a great day Инокентиј (talk) 12:10, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your 02:32, 2 December 2024 edit is the cause of the breakage.
This 11:05, 9 August 2024 edit by User:Bjankuloski06 also broke the Module suite.
You should revert mk:Module:Citation/CS1/Identifiers back to the 11:54, 23 January 2023 version by User:Ehrlich91.
To upgrade the cs1|2 module suite, all modules must be updated at the same time. Best practice is to import the entire live version of the English suite to sandboxen at mk.wiki. Tweak those sandboxen as necessary (translations, etc), test the sandboxen to make sure nothing is broken, and only then, update your live cs1|2 module suite from the sandboxen.
When I looked at the article source for mk:Мајкелсон-Морлиев обид I noticed stuff like this:
 •
 •
Note the extra spaces following the dots in |doi=, |url=, and |bibcode=. Those spaces must not be there. The extraneous spaces were added at this 19:35, 30 October 2015 edit by Bjankuloski06.
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:07, 5 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your time will enact the change as you have suggested soon. Best Инокентиј (talk) 14:12, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback wanted for Module:Wikt-lang/sandbox

[edit]

Hey Trappist, would you mind taking a look at Module:Wikt-lang/sandbox and Module:Lang/sandbox2 (changes; testcases - the difference in /testcases results are because Lang wraps in a title attribute). I've re-wrote Wikt-lang and it now uses Module:Lang to handle all language code, italic, html wrapping logic. I've had to edit Lang in two places to allow it to work. Any feedback welcomed. Gonnym (talk) 11:15, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All that I have done is look at your proposed change in Module:Lang/sandbox2 at Lines 489–497. lang, langx, transliteration, and the various functions should never have access to the Wiktionary-specific language tags. If we at en.wiki decide to adopt some or all of Wiktionary's private use tags, those tags can (should) be added to Module:Lang/data.
I hacked a (far from perfect) module in my sandbox so that I could see how wikt-lang's language data compared to Lang's data. The code creates four tables that can be viewed in the debug console.
It seems to me that if wikt-lang is going to utilize lang in some form, module:lang should have a separate entry point for wikt-lang; Module:Wikt-lang/data should be loaded there, not in get_ietf_parts(). When fetching language names, wikt-lang must query its own Module:Wikt-lang/data before it attempts to query Module:Lang/data.
Wiktionary has a number of nonstandard language tags (cel-pro, gmw-ecg, zle-ort, etc). None of these are valid IETF language tags:
cel-procel is Celtic languages; pro is an invalid extlang (but is a language tag for unrelated Old Provençal)
gmw-ecggmw is West Germanic languages; ecg is an invalid extlang
zle-ortzle is East Slavic languages; ort is an invalid extlang (but is a language tag for unrelated Adivasi Oriya)
Module:Lang does not support extlangs because there are none currently defined that don't have preferred primary language tags. For the tool tip, wikt-lang should use the name from Wikt-lang/data and strip extlangs from those language tags that have them; module:lang must not create invalid lang= html attributes.
Trappist the monk (talk) 18:39, 6 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You should use Module:Wikt-lang/data/sandbox, not the live version (I tried fixing the language tags similar to how you've done the private tags). Regarding the language tags, there are two things here that the language tags do, one is wrap the text, so it doesn't matter what Wiktionary does over there (which is why I converted it to use Lang). The second, is generating a page name link. Only languages which aren't defined or are different from Lang, need to have their information in the /data module.
I'll take a look at your suggestion of adding an entry for Wikt-lang. Gonnym (talk) 02:24, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so I've modified the code a bit. The logic is as follows:
 • Module:Lang handles the HTML tag of the display text, and the English Wikipedia language categorization.
 • Module:Wikt-lang handles the Wiktionary link.
That means that:
 • If a language code exists on both and the language name is the same, nothing needs to be done.
 • If a language code exists on both but the language name is different, then the language name needs to be added to Module:Wikt-lang/data.
 • If a language code does not exist on English Wikipedia, it should be added to Module:Lang/data so proper wrapping and categorization can happen here.
Module:Wikt-lang/comparison has a table with the differences. There are currently only 6 private codes that aren't in Module:Lang/data. Gonnym (talk) 12:26, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't looked at the code but I have looked at Module talk:Wikt-lang/testcases. Every test fails and not necessarily in ways expected from a code rewrite.
If a language code exists on both but the language name is different, then the language name needs to be added to Module:Wikt-lang/data. Why? If the editors at Wiktionary prefer Penobscot over Eastern Abnaki, why add Eastern Abnaki to Module:Wikt-lang/data?
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:48, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You created wikt_lang() in Module:Lang/sandbox2 at lines 1892–1901. I assume that you mean to call that function from Module:Wikt-lang/sandbox. If so, the function and its exports should be renamed to _wikt_lang(); leading underscore identifies functions that are, or can be, called from other modules. In the comment at line 1967 (if retained) should read -- entry point for Wikt-lang; template name is hyphenated.
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:29, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If a language code exists on both but the language name is different, then the language name needs to be added to Module:Wikt-lang/data. Why? If the editors at Wiktionary prefer Penobscot over Eastern Abnaki, why add Eastern Abnaki to Module:Wikt-lang/data?
The name added to Module:Wikt-lang/data/sandbox isn't Eastern Abnaki, it's Penobscot (the name used at Wiktionary) (as can be seen in the code). Gonnym (talk) 15:56, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because Module:Wikt-lang/data, and Module:Wikt-lang/data/sandbox, already have Penobscot, I assumed that you meant to add Eastern Abnaki. If that is not what you meant, how does Module:Wikt-lang/sandbox know that a wikitionary language name for some particular code is different from Module:Lang's language name for the same code? Surely there isn't yet another ~/data module that holds wikitionary-preferred language names?
Trappist the monk (talk) 16:36, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't know and doesn't need to know. Line 81 is the place where the Wiktionary language name is set. I get the language name back from Lang and unless there is a language override, it uses it. Gonnym (talk) 17:30, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We must not be communicating. You wrote: If a language code exists on both but the language name is different, then the language name needs to be added to Module:Wikt-lang/data. I understand that to mean:
 • :IF: Module:Lang/data has language tag aaq :AND:
 • :IF: Module:Wikt-lang/data has language tag aaq :AND:
 • :IF: Module:Lang/data language for aaq (Eastern Abnaki) :NOT_EQ: Module:Wikt-lang/data language-name for aaq (Penobscot) :THEN:
 • :DO: add a language name to Module:Wikt-lang/data :END:
That makes no sense to me. Both ~/data modules have the language tag but each tag refers to a different name, so why do we need to add a language name to Module:Wikt-lang/data (which already has a name)?
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:48, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your third point is incorrect. If the language code exists on both but the language name is different (at Wiktionary) and not currently set, then it needs to be added to the module. Gonnym (talk) 09:44, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Citation templates

[edit]

I have a question. We use the CS1 template/module suite on the AARoads Wiki. We're curious about restyling the output to follow the Chicago Manual of Style author-date output. What would we need to edit to change the output order of the templates? We're curious if the "juice is worth the squeeze", so to speak. Imzadi 1979  22:19, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Two random thoughts that I had after I pressed save:
 1. I wonder if a |mode=cmos option in the templates might be possible, and
 2. Is there a way on the other wiki to make a mode a default?
With the first, any effort made to support the other style could be available to enwiki. As we import various articles, we have been switching articles from CS2 over to CS1 for greater consistency in the corpus of 25,600 articles, but if we could shut off CS2 and force CS1, that would simplify some of that work. It would also allow us to shut off CS1 in the future and force the CMOS rendering wiki-wide. Imzadi 1979  22:29, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To force cs1, search Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration for:
get_cs1_config (); -- fill <global_cs1_config_t>
on the following line add:
global_cs1_config_t['Mode']='cs1'; -- force cs1 mode
Several years ago I attempted to add support for |mode=apa. That attempt was difficult and, in the end, a dismal failure. Likely |mode=cmos would be more of the same because every little tweak required for cmos must not break cs1|2 and t'other way round.
If you really, really, must have cmos, you might be better off rolling your own; no simple task that ...
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:11, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's kind of what I thought, although I was hoping that there was some module that contained the output instructions by mode/style and we could just code up the appropriate style. I've forced cs1 though, so thank you for that easy update. Imzadi 1979  00:01, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a similar code snippet that would force |name-list-style=amp? With a smaller corpus of articles from a single topic area, we started with a greater level of consistency from article to article since we really only had CS1 (with a few articles imported that used CS2 before the update), but it would be nice to make things very consistent overall. Imzadi 1979  20:28, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Same place:
global_cs1_config_t['NameListStyle']='amp'; -- force |namelist-style=amp

Antured: Acknowledged. But please tell me that this edit of yours is not a typical unsupported parameter 'fix'. Just because |agency= isn't supported by cite av media does not mean that its content is wrong. This is the template that you edited:

Radio is not an author surname; similarly, Sveriges is not an author given name; and, Sveriges Radio is not a newspaper. I would have rewritten the template this way:

7&6=thirteen () 15:23, 1 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, on the whole it's a helpful thing, we can all make small slips here and there, even if we do occasionally find the edit comments about what not to do the teeniest bit schoolmarmy and patronising! FWIW I've done over 100 edits to insert links to new articles in the past couple of days, so the odd duff old URL is going to get through. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:00, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Mistakes happen. Human error and Operator error, among other things. Backup is most welcome. 7&6=thirteen () 16:12, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

At the risk of confirming my status as schoolmarm, the Show preview button is your friend. I use it habitually along with the mbox at the top of the preview to catch and fix all cs1|2 errors that I've made before I click Publish changes.

Thanks for your edits to Module:Citation/CS1/sandbox.

It was only a test. Isn't that what "/sandbox" subpages are for for templates?

Is there a problem? i.e. Are the changes automatically integrated, etc.? In any case if this does need consensus then it probably will not happen right now. I am working on a Lua autodoc generator I imported from Fandom and would like to see how it would handle complex modules. This module is quite complex that indeed syntaxhighlight does drop out. Being able to see all of the usable items is quite important especially for modules that can be used in other modules.

I did notice a couple of mismatched code block indentation as well, unless if that was intentional? When I copy/pasted into VS Code it made it a little difficult to follow.

I do appreciate the amazing work that went into this module anyway to make sure that citation formatting is robust.

If you do not want me touching this I'll create another sandbox with the LDoc formatted test code, etc. Aasim (話すはなす) 23:45, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that is what sandboxen are for. Had you been making edits that changed how the module processed a cs1|2 template, and either left a sufficiently detailed edit summary or had discussed the edits at Help talk:Citation Style 1, I would not have been likely to revert immediately. These unexplained edits were sufficiently invasive and complex that I could not be sure that you hadn't broken something.
I am interested to know what mismatched code block indentation you found so that I can answer your intentional? question.
Please use your own sandbox. My experience with 'code documentor' tools has been abysmal; it will take something truly impressive to convince me that there is benefit to using one.
Trappist the monk (talk) 00:11, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Taking a second look I could not exactly find the indentation issue I was originally experiencing. But there was a different issue with indentation that was a little frustrating working in VS Code and thus I went ahead and fixed.
I just copied Module:Citation/CS1/sandbox into VS Code; when I tried to fold (collapse) the citation0 function, certain unindented lines were still visible; lines 2916, line 2922, line 2923, line 2997, 3138-3149, 3150, 3897, 3950, and 3998. Every other function collapsed correctly. When fixing the indentation on these the citation0 function collapsed correctly. I'll go implement that change (not converting the existing comments to use LDoc-like format) as it is something that happens even with me; sometimes I write some code and the indentation gets wonky.
It technically is a WP:COSMETIC change, but a kind-of important one for readability. Not that the readability is good anyway because syntaxhighlight does not turn on for really large modules. I prefer a code editor to see large modules especially because I get lost without syntaxhighlight, and it would be good to be able to collapse all of those code blocks when editing. Aasim (話すはなす) 02:02, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If your tool chokes when attempting to collapse a function that has comments or code at the left margin, you need a better tool. The wikipedia code editor will collapse those sorts of functions as will the text editor that I use (Notepad++).
I put line-comment markup at the left margin so that it is easy to detect. I do that when moving or rewriting chunks of code so that I can restore portions of an edit if necessary. Newly added code also goes against the left margin for the same reason. Before syncing the live modules from their sandboxen, I will go through each sandbox module and remove these sorts of commented-out code and indent the new additions. I will revert your edit.
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:49, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, is that why? That makes more sense. When the changes get implemented will the indentation be adjusted properly then? That is what I guess. Aasim (話すはなす) 14:55, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I did write: Before syncing the live modules from their sandboxen, I will go through each sandbox module and remove these sorts of commented-out code and indent the new additions. Does that not answer your question?
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:57, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Monkbot request

[edit]

Would you consider replacing pt for pt in members of Category:Federal universities of Brazil (possible all of Category:Universities and colleges in Brazil), please? That way, the language name won't be in bold, compare:

Thanks! fgnievinski (talk) 03:50, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Monkbot is not approved to do that and I'm not willing to pursue approval for so few articles. I did a quick-and-dirty search across both of the categories that you name using AWB and found 60+ articles that have the misplaced bold markup.
The regex search string that I used is: \{\{\s*([Ll]angx\s*\|\s*pt\s*\|)([^\}]+)\}\}. The matching replacement string is: . Here is the list of articles:

If you do not have permission to use AWB, you can make a request at WP:AWBREQ.

Question about a recent edit

[edit]

You recently deleted url-status=dead from Franklin Clarence Mars with this edit. I was wondering why. Thanks - Shearonink (talk) 14:41, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

|url-status=dead serves no purpose other than to clutter an article's wikitext. Compare these examples:
Title. Archived from the original on 2025-03-19.
Title. Archived from the original on 2025-03-19.
No difference so no point in retaining |url-status=dead.
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:54, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I always thought it was a courtesy to editors coming afterwards or to possibly-interested readers wanting to verify, to let them know the url had gone dead and it was only available on the Wayback etc. So that isn't the case? - Shearonink (talk) 15:38, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The courtesy is to say when the rendering of the cs1|2 template will differ from its default. When |url= is live and |archive-url= has a value, we say so by setting |url-status=live. In the pre-Lua days of yore, we wrote |deadurl=no; the templates ignored |urldead=yes then as |url-status=dead is ignored now. For cs1|2, it has always been true that |url= is presumed to be dead when |archive-url= has an assigned value. There is no need to highlight the norm.
Trappist the monk (talk) 16:11, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. Ok...I am such a Luddite & techno-phobe I tend to err on the side of lotsa detail and metaphorical breadcrumbs...thanks for the explanation, I'll try to remember to not be as redundant in the future. Cheers, Shearonink (talk) 00:29, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

format_isbn

[edit]

Just fyi, has to be subst'ed. Also, it doesn't always work; when it doesn't, it throws errors, so you also need to check for them. It's not clear to me whether this is because it doesn't work with all ISBNs, or whether the code is getting changed and broken occasionally. Thought you'd want to know. Skyerise (talk) 01:07, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know that format isbn must be substd; I wrote it. At the top of the doc page is an information box that, at the end says: "Any accidental transclusions will be automatically substituted by a bot." When format isbn wraps the ISBN inside tags (usually a cs1|2 template or an ISBN template) the standard does not work so it is necessary to subst via bot (AnomieBOT/docs/TemplateSubster).
AnomieBOT does not immediately subst templates but usually gets round to substing format isbn templates within an hour or two of the edit – see, for example, the history of Communist_front. I made my edit to Apotropaic magic at 00:24, 19 March 2025; you reverted me at 01:03, 19 March 2025. You should self revert and then wait for AnomieBOT to get round to doing the substing.
Also, it doesn't always work; when it doesn't, it throws errors Can you show examples?
Trappist the monk (talk) 01:30, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Skyerise: Are you ignoring me?
Trappist the monk (talk) 00:50, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, didn't see any notification until now. The change you made on Apotropaic magic had error messages on all four of the ISBNs you used it on, which is why I reverted it, but now it doesn't. Do you know if format ISBN using some external code? Because some days it throws errors about illegal characters in ISBNs and some days it doesn't. It's really quite frustrating as I try to use it all the time but half the time half to back it out. I'll try to ping you if I find an example, but now I see it's sporadic since the code hasn't actually been changed lately that I can see, so it's possible by the time you look it will have resolved itself. Skyerise (talk) 09:26, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There was no notification. I should not have to ping you when you start a discussion on my talk page; that's what your watchlist is for.
I have never seen any errors with format ISBN nor has anyone else ever reported that they see errors. If you are seeing errors and you are sure that the error arises from format ISBN I would very much like to know where you are seeing them and what the exact error message is. If these errors are transitory, a screen capture showing the error would be beneficial.

Recent edits on military topics appearing in pop culture

[edit]

Hello,

How do we justify the pop culture appearances of those military topics I edited but were reverted, especially if they were confirmed by sources?

Thanks for consultation advice. Odla101010 (talk) 02:40, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Does WP:MILPOP not answer your question? Mention of pop culture appearances are no more significant to the ship's life than mention of a port call to an allied country so not at all important to our article about the ship.

I've started WP:ANI#Template edit incorrectly creating error cat with 25000+ entries needs reverting to revert your template change, and perhaps to discuss the recurring issue with these unnecessary mass error cats you populate regularly. You are welcome to join the discussion. Fram (talk) 17:16, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Trappist the monk, can you address issues that came up in this ANI discussion? I see you are actively editing. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 22:32, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Unless compelled to do so, I will not. WP:ANI is peopled by editors who are angry or who seem to delight and thrive in the adversarial drama that happens there. I am not one of those people so I choose to avoid such places.
The original discussion, before an editor forked it off to WP:ANI, is at Help talk:Citation Style 1 § ISBN / Date incompatibility. If you need my input for your deliberations, post there. Assuming that the discussion stays more-or-less on topic and I think that what I say might be useful, I will reply there.

Button at Main page of srwiki, mobile

[edit]

Could you make a button that leads to full article from Main page at srwiki appear fully or actually not appear at all in mobile view? Currently, I see lower part and two upward-curved small parts of it. At least, inform editors there (technical assist for other language project) that there is wrong output in mobile view. The button is leading where supposed but mw-ui-button does not work properly at mobile view as I see what the issue is (also, there are some classes or styles such Mediawiki quiet or nomobile that are not working properly) after other meanwhile improvements they made. I see a clearly visible button near bottom of that Main page that is imported by Mediawiki from recent time, so it would probably be desirable that added nomobile class works too, preventing completely output of the button to evade confusion and repeating similar visual elements. Thank you. --5.43.66.110 (talk); 14:52, 2025-04-30 (UTC) [e]

I cannot. You would probably be better served by asking for help at sr:Википедија:Трг/Техника or by filing a ticket at phabricator.

"Cite repair" edit broke file

At Ainu people, your edit broke a file link by replacing curly quotes in a file name with straight quotes. I'm guessing you're using a script to make these edits -- you should probably make sure it doesn't mess with file links. Jay8g [VTE] 00:01, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Panzer Tracts and {cite book}

[edit]

Hi, Thanks for sorting out the cite book issue at Panzer I at the Help Desk.

What is your thinking about the pagination scheme of the dreaded Panzer Tracts series? As far as I can tell, Jentz & Doyle use ordinary hyphen-minus on the front covers, e.g. Panzer Tracts 3-1, and in page numberings, e.g. 3-1-17. [1]

A slightly simpler way could be to leave out the volume number and just use the page number: [2]

I know that cite book automatically formats normal page ranges with an en-dash,[3] which I normally try to insert anyway, but |pp=3-1-17–3-1-20[4] is very unwieldy. With too many hyphens I think it just gives up.[5]

Perhaps |pp=3-1-17–20 [6], or |pp=3-1-17 to 20[7] is easier to comprehend at a glance, although not exactly approved.

Am I interpreting the behaviour of the template correctly? Do you have any specific preferences? Cheers, MinorProphet (talk) 08:04, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I want to know if you can consider dropping protection to extended confirmed since the module is only used about 2,000 times. This does not fall to the level of "high risk" that is needed to have the template protected at that level. Aasim (話すはなす) 22:22, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I see. Well, now it is possible to partial block in response to edit wars, so protecting in this manner is pointless now unless if there are a large number of people involved in the conflict. Aasim (話すはなす) 22:52, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Higher Categories and Homotopical Algebra

[edit]

Hello! I hope you can help me with a little problem since I just saw that you undid my edit on Reedy category. (I would have done it myself anyway after a while.) So far I simply wasn't able to link my new article for Higher Categories and Homotopical Algebra on the dozens of articles that feature the book in their literature section, some of which written by myself. (Reedy category showed up first in the search list of such articles.) It seems both an article on Wikipedia and a link online are competing for the title and both just give an error. Is there some way to fix this? So far, I've not found a solution yet. Thank you for your help! Samuel Adrian Antz (talk) 23:07, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

First the technical part. It is not possible to simultaneously link a single item (|title=Higher Categories and Homotopical Algebra) to more than one target (Higher Categories and Homotopical Algebra and |url=https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/higher-categories-and-homotopical-algebra/C5509D2179302B3F3876A007815A2BBC#fndtn-information).
At Reedy category, you might move all that is currently in § Further reading to a new section § External links. Then move Cisinski, Berger & Moerdijk, and Campion to § Further reading because they are not used as sources in the body of the article. Above § References create a new section § See also to hold a link to Higher Categories and Homotopical Algebra.
Higher Categories and Homotopical Algebra has already been tagged with over-quotation so that needs attention. Further, the rest of the article appears to rely on a single source: the book's author. At en.wiki, we do not care about what a subject says or wants said about themself. We only care about what wholly unconnected people have published about the subject in reliable sources. So, your sourcing is in need much attention.
I know that this sounds a bit harsh, but fix it now before your article ends up at WP:AFD. You might want to consider moving to Draft namespace so that you can continue to work without worrying about WP:AFT.
Trappist the monk (talk) 00:28, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk Thanks for your detailed answer! Putting it in the "See also" section really seems like a good option. (It's still odd though, that this technical problem even exists. On the german Wikipedia, the external link is always separated to avoid it.) I've also cleaned up Reedy category a bit now.
The over-quotation has already been dealt with, but I leave it to the person who added the template to remove it again or tell me to further reduce the quotation.
I'm still a bit confused about that "sourcing in need much attention". Although I see that it could be better, aren't four reviews by well-known mathematicians as listed on the website of the University of Cambridge enough? Because depending on how strict you mean "wholly unconnected people", that could be up to impossible since the only people who publish about such an advanced mathematical textbook are other mathematicians. I've now also added external links to nLab and another review. Samuel Adrian Antz (talk) 00:59, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk Update to the last part: I was now informed that the problem is that the quotes are purely promotional blurbs. In that case, I support a removal. But for one of the quotes, I have found the review it came from. Would it be okay to go through it and compile something for the review section that leaves out the part used for promotional purposes on the publisher's website? Samuel Adrian Antz (talk) 04:34, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really the person to be answering that question; I spend most of my en.wiki life gnoming citations. I have been here long enough to know that citing the book that is the subject of the en.wiki article is more-or-less a non-starter here so that is why I mentioned that. Perhaps you can consult with editors at WT:WPMATH or other suitable wikiproject about how to improve Higher Categories and Homotopical Algebra and Denis-Charles Cisinski. Those editors are best qualified to know how to make improvements.

Translating the date

[edit]

@Trappist the monk hope you are doing well. So, I was trying to localize the citation module from the latest revision in this wiki. Can you please tell me where I can translate the date and numbers। Like: |date = 12 February 2024 or ১২ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০২৪ Will show ১২ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০২৪ Same for the other digit related parameters like |p= |pp= |year= |access-date = etc R1F4T (talk) 08:00, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If this is for bn.wiki then bn:মডিউল:Citation/CS1/Configuration. At lines 10 and 11, local_digits_from_mediawiki and local_date_names_from_mediawiki are both set to true so the code at lines 650–661 and 669–675 should automatically provide date and digit translations. If I put this in the debug console: =mw.dumpObject (p.date_names) the module returns a lua table of what looks to me like translated month names and digits.
If I write in my bn.wiki sandbox and preview I get ২০২৪। সংগ্রহের তারিখ ৮ জুন ২০২৫। so the translation appears to be working. cs1|2 does not translate page numbers.
Trappist the monk (talk) 12:52, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Trappist the monk and what you tested was not the sandbox bn:মডিউল:Citation/CS1/Configuration I am using the English name for sandbox actually R1F4T (talk) 14:00, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What? I don't know what you mean by that. Your bn:মডিউল:Citation/CS1/Configuration links to the same module that I linked. bn:মডিউল:Citation/CS1/Configuration/sandbox does not exist. It should. It is poor practice to attempt to update the cs1|2 suite from en.wiki to bn.wiki without first copying en.wiki/live to bn.wiki/sandbox. Do that. Adjust the bn.wiki/sandbox as necessary for bn.wiki, test it, get it right, and only then update the bn.wiki/live from bn.wiki/sandbox.
The other thing that needs doing is lines 17, 18 set to true.
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:38, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk actually the module what we are currently use is called bn: মডিউল:উদ্ধৃতি/রূপরেখা 'উদ্ধৃতি' stands for citation and রূপরেখা stands configaration R1F4T (talk) 14:43, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh. As you can see, that sort of organization is confusing. That particular module is obsolete. bn.wiki would be better served (I think) in future to adopt the same ~/live and ~/sandbox structure as is used at en.wiki – unless from hereon you choose to go your own way. It is not easy to update the cs1|2 module suite when the target structure is the same; why make it more difficult with a different structure?
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:57, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk yea you are right though. R1F4T (talk) 15:08, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
should I transfer the sandbox code to the ~/খেলাঘর now? R1F4T (talk) 15:09, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your call, of course. Were it up to me, I would, and I would not use ~/খেলাঘর but would stick with the English names and English ~/sandbox. In Module:Citation/CS1 in function _citation(), we do a test to see if we are using the live module suite or the sandbox module suite. Keeping the English names simplifies an update because you don't have to bother changing and testing the code in _citation(). At bn:Template:Cite web/new (and the other cs1|2 templates), change {{#invoke:citation/CS1 to {{#invoke:citation/CS1/sandbox. That will force sandbox templates to use the sandbox module suite which facilitates testing.
One last suggestion. Make a list of changes to the module suite that are necessary for it to operate properly at bn.wiki. It will help you, and editors who succeed you, when it comes time to do subsequent updates.
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:42, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk ok I am trying to move this in the ~/খেলাঘর as we use that. An pls give me the solution to the problem after I do advance thanks R1F4T (talk) 16:02, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok instead of transfering to the sandbox can you suppose it as main module and fix it then it will be easier for you to navigate R1F4T (talk) 16:04, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure I understand you. The purpose of the sandboxen is to allow you to change the module suite without jeopardizing the references on thousands and thousands of articles. Were I you, I would not be making (possibly) breaking changes to a live module.
Trappist the monk (talk) 16:24, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk acctualy we are not using the module any where else using bn: মডিউল:উদ্ধৃতি which is a lot older revision of this module R1F4T (talk) 16:27, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, don't understand the question. Rephrase?
Trappist the monk (talk) 17:44, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk ok let me give example
Paul. Zebra (in Bengali).
Like this is first showing the author name and then title also I need to make the in Bangla to "Bangla in" or বাংলা ভাষায় R1F4T (talk) 17:48, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The preferred method for describing the language of the source is to use an ISO 639 language tag so you should write: |language=bn. cs1|2 recognizes the bn as the language of bn.wiki so it suppresses the language annotation. When I write your example template at my bn.wiki sandbox and use |language=en the annotation is: (ইংরেজি ভাষায়).
The module suite fetches language tags/names from MediaWiki. At en.wiki, we remap some of those to be suitable for our needs. We remap bn from 'Bangla' (an endonym) to 'Bengali' (an exonym) (Endonym and exonym). That remapping happens in bn:মডিউল:Citation/CS1/Configuration; search for 'bangla'.
Trappist the monk (talk) 18:15, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk you're getting the right result because you're testing the old fixed module it was localised about 5 years ago R1F4T (talk) 18:20, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Now where I can make the "in Bengali" to "Bengali in" R1F4T (talk) 18:24, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Update:found it R1F4T (talk) 18:28, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hey where I can translate the ISSN number and ISBN number R1F4T (talk) 23:02, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
cs1|2 does not support translation of ISBN or ISSN in either direction; these (and other) identifiers are expected to use Arabic numerals.
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:25, 9 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok R1F4T (talk) 02:42, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I can't help because, frankly, I have zero interest in actors/social media personalities.

Sydney Gibbes page edits 2013

[edit]

Hi, on 10 December 2013 you made the following additions to the page "Sydney Gibbes": The house was built circa 1890 by a charity founded to distribute free medicine to the poor. During the war the building became the central 'Air Raid Protection' telephone exchange and there is still a 'bomb proof' concrete partition between the ground and first floor.

Can you tell me where you found this information? I am a local Oxford historian. Many thanks. 2A00:23C8:D020:4501:4965:70C4:C8ED:7A94 (talk) 16:20, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You are mistaken. On that date, I made this edit. A slight variant of the text you quote was added to the article at this edit of 2013-02-12 and then tweaked for grammar which matches the text of your quote at this edit of 2013-02-23.
I cannot answer your question. If you do find a source for that text, please add it to the article.

New message from Shearonink

[edit]

You are invited to join the discussion at Talk:Effects of the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane in Florida § Harv warning on Ref #2. There's a Harv warning on this article and I can't figure out how to fix it. You edited Template:Atlantic hurricane best track that I think is causing the issue, am hoping you can fix the Harv warning. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 03:15, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Replied there.

Help request

[edit]

Hi, some time ago I asked about importing citation module. I just did that. It's imported at pl:wikt:Moduł:Citation/, module is invoked at Wikisłownikarz:Sławobóg/cytuj and there is an error. All I changed is removing /cs1/ from module title (I changed it inside of module). Could you help me? Sławobóg (talk) 14:28, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Somehow you seem to have imported an old version of Module:Citation/CS1/Date validation to wikt:Moduł:Citation/Date validation. When importing the cs1|2 module suite, import only the current version of each module.
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:54, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, I don't know how did that happen, thanks. To translate parameters do I need to do that just at /Whitelist or somewhere else? Sławobóg (talk) 16:10, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Add. Do not translate. Add the Polish parameter names to the existing lists in pl:wikt:Moduł:Citation/Whitelist. Add them as blocks of names, don't interleave them so that when it comes time to update the module suite, you simply copy the blocks of Polish parameter names from the old module to the new.
Alas, that won't work for pl:wikt:Moduł:Citation/Configuration where English and Polish parameter names are mapped to meta-parameter names in the aliases table. Do not translate the meta-parameter names.

How do I change linking to Wikipedia? Now author-link/ISBN etc. liks to Wiktionary. Sławobóg (talk) 13:11, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For |author-linkn=, |title-link=, etc you must specify the links as interproject links. To link to Charles Darwin's article at pl.wiki from pl.wikt, write |author-link=:w:Charles Darwin (you can also write |author=:w:Charles Darwin).
For ISBN and other identifiers, the module suite is supposed to look in id_handlers for a link to the wikipedia article. For example, for ISBN, if use_identifier_redirects is set to true, the module uses the id_handlers['ISBN'].redirect to get the article name that is the link. When use_identifier_redirects is set to false, and there is a Wikidata identifier provided, the module is supposed to fetch the wikipedia article title from Wikidata for the local language (for ISBN should return Międzynarodowy znormalizowany numer książki). That works fine for pl.wiki but is broken for pl.wikt. I'm wondering if it ever worked.
If you will permit, I will do some experimenting tomorrow my time (UTC-6) to see if I can arrive at fix.
Trappist the monk (talk) 22:27, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, that would be nice. I noticed you started doing something, do you need changes to be reviewed for testing to work? Sławobóg (talk) 16:19, 11 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You either trust me or you don't. Applying pending changes protection implies that you don't. If you want my help, remove the protection.
Trappist the monk (talk) 16:24, 11 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not the admin, and all pages are under protection. I saw that you deleted ISBN message and it wasn't there, so I guess you can ignore the protection. Sławobóg (talk) 16:29, 11 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Way to get list of articles

[edit]

Hello Trappist the monk, It seems like you are very much proficient in citation related issues and you are also very active on such things. I want to know if there is any way to get page name which have same url at references or get all pages of any location of saarland which have any citation error, let's say URL errors.––kemel49(connect)(contri) 14:09, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I don't quite understand your question. If you are looking for cs1|2 url errors in articles that contain the word 'saarland', this search finds about 60 articles. If you are looking for a specific url, try Special:LinkSearch. Did I answer your question?
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:26, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
yup,  Thanks––kemel49(connect)(contri) 14:29, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
By the way why these article have similar issues, i tried to fix them here and here. Is there any way that we can solve them at once.––kemel49(connect)(contri) 15:23, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
