Incomplete DYK nomination
[edit] Hello! Your submission of Template:Did you know nominations/Nasra Ali Abukar at the Did You Know nominations page is not complete; if you would like to continue, please link the nomination to the nominations page as described in step III of the nomination procedure. If you do not want to continue with the nomination, tag the nomination page with {{db-g7}}, or ask a DYK admin. Thank you. DYKHousekeepingBot (talk) 01:32, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
- QalasQalas, thank you for your interest in DYK. Unfortunately, your DYK nomination of Nasra Ali Abukar cannot succeed, because the article had not, within the previous seven days, been expanded fivefold; indeed, there hadn't been any expansion at all. This affects two nominations: this one, and the one you attempted a couple of days later, noted in the section below. If you would tag these nominations pages, that would be great, or if you'd like me to help, I'm happy to make sure these nomination pages are deleted. In the future, please note that articles nominated for DYK need to be either newly created, newly expanded fivefold, or newly promoted Good Articles (within the past seven days). Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Defunct government ministries of Somalia
[edit]
A tag has been placed on Category:Defunct government ministries of Somalia indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. ✗plicit 12:05, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
Unexplained blank and redirect of Isse Mohamoud Yusuf
[edit] Hello, I'm Cameron Dewe. I noticed that you recently removed content from Isse Mohamoud Yusuf without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Redirecting this article to a list of Somali pirates creates a circular redirect and is contrary to the purpose of having a list, which is to allow readers to find more detailed articles about the people that are on the list. If you think Isse Mohamoud Yusuf is not a notable Somali pirate deserving a separate article, please explain your reasoning by proposing the article for deletion. If he is not notable, then he should not appear on the list either. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 09:38, 24 February 2025 (UTC)
- Cameron Dewe, I created this article then I noticed the page should be merged despite lack of notability, but it's not WP:STUB unlike Bileh and Abshir Boyah, later that is why I created a list for redirecting.
- Reason for Redirecting is WP:CRIMINAL and WP:ONEEVENT.
- You are welcome to nominate merging and thanks. QalasQalas (talk) 17:13, 24 February 2025 (UTC)

Formal warning: personal attacks in a contentious area
[edit]You have recently edited a page related to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes), a topic designated as contentious. A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, and follow behavioural best practices. Your behaviour about a month ago at Talk:Islamic State insurgency in Puntland included a series of WP:personal attacks and fell far short of expectations. This is a formal warning under the contentious topic procedures. Please redact your statements and focus on content. Any further personal attacks or aspersions can lead to a topic ban or block. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 15:46, 2 March 2025 (UTC)

English-language concerns and advice
[edit]Hello @QalasQalas! I'm The Kip, a fellow frequent editor of Portal:Current events.
I can see that you obviously intend to contribute to the project in a positive way, with your significant edits on various Somalia-related pages - specifically, I've witnessed your contributions to the Current Events portal's Somali civil war/Puntland insurgency blurbs. I'd like to make it clear I genuinely appreciate these contribs, as you're shedding light on and expanding a topic area that's often been underserved on Wikipedia.
However, I have some concerns with your grasp on English that I'd like to voice and offer advice/feedback/assistance on. As WP:CIR states, editors are presumed to have the ability to read and write English well enough to avoid introducing incomprehensible text into articles and to communicate effectively.
Often, your contribs, while well-meaning, have introduced awkward, unclear, and/or substantially erroneous grammar into articles and blurbs; examples include:
- CE entry for 11 March:
...after Five Al-Shabab militants started a suicide car bomb explosives later direct assault attack on a hotel in Beledweyne, Hiiraan Somalia.
- Five should not be capitalized; "started a suicide car bomb explosives later direct assault attack" is unclear, is missing transitions and participles ("before," "attacking" instead of just "attack," etc), and lacks agreement in quantity ("a" is singular, "explosives" is plural); and there should be a comma after Hiraan.
- This should read more like, "after five Al-Shabaab militants detonated a car bomb and attacked a hotel in Beledweyne, Hiiraan, Somalia."
- CE entry for 8 March:
Dozens casualties including a senior police commander was killed as heavy fighting broke out following Al-Shabaab fighters attacked Somali national forces, Al-Shabaab claims to have taken over new areas of Al-Kawthar and Boos-Hareeri in Middle Shabelle region, Hirshabelle state of Somalia.
- There's a missing "of" between dozens and casualties; there's a lack of agreement in quantity ("dozens" is plural, "was" is singular); "following" and "attacked" disagree in tense; "dozens of casualties" and "were killed" are redundant to each other; and there should be a period after forces instead of a comma.
- This should read more like, "Dozens of Somali security forces, including a senior police commander, were killed as heavy fighting broke out after Al-Shabaab fighters attacked Somali national forces. Al-Shabaab claims to have taken over new areas of Al-Kawthar and Boos-Hareeri in Middle Shabelle region, Hirshabelle state, Somalia."
- CE entry for 7 March:
The United States Army in Puntland would not withdraw swiftly in response to double ongoing operations...
- "would not withdraw swiftly in response to double ongoing operations" needs a comma before "in response" to clarify meaning; "swiftly" is an unnecessary word; and an additional bit is needed after "withdraw" to fully clarify where they're not withdrawing from. Why "double" is included is also unclear, even with the full blurb.
- This should read more like, "United States Army forces in Puntland announced they would not withdraw from the region, in response to ongoing operations..."
- The early state of the Beledweyne hotel attack article:
On 11 March 2025 five Al-Shabaab militants started a suicide car bomb explosives later direct assault attack and sieged including mass shooting on a hotel in Beledweyne, Somalia. Initial at least six people were killed...
- This partly touches on the same issues from the first blurb, but adds some issues. Most notably, the verb "sieged" should be the noun "siege" instead, and should probably be at the end of the sentence, while "mass shooting" feels redundant given the context of "attacked." "Initial" should also be the adverb "Initially."
- This should read more like, "On 11 March 2025, five Al-Shabaab militants detonated a car bomb and attacked a hotel in Beledweyne, Somalia, leading to a siege. Initially, at least six people were killed..."
While critical, don't take this as myself being angry or as insulting you - I once again legitimately appreciate your efforts to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Somalia, and I encourage you to keep editing. With that in mind, you'll need to keep improving your skills to do so successfully/constructively, and my best advice is twofold:
- Continue training yourself in the English language, practicing in your spare time - with practice comes expertise. Review the grammatical fixes made to your contributions and learn why they were made in the way they were. I'm always happy to explain my changes if you ever have a question.
- Concentrate on editing high-visibility articles (such as the Current Events portal), where your contribs can continue to be included, but other editors will be able to copyedit your contribs in a timely manner to bring them up to Wikipedia standards.
I hope to continue to see you around here, and I likewise am excited to see your continued development as an editor. The Kip (contribs) 08:37, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @The Kip, I'm human and even though I'm not perfect but mistake was due to my rushing.
- I left it for the editors to fix or I might have corrected it later. QalasQalas (talk) 09:24, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
