The Signpost: 04 March 2013

Recently I was having a casual conversation with a friend, and he mentioned that he spent too many hours a day playing video games. I responded with a comment that I, too, spent way too much time on an activity of my own – Wikipedia. In an attempt to reply with a relevant remark, he offered something along the lines of: "So have you ever written anything?" After a second, I quickly answered yes, but I was still in shock over his question. It seemed to be rooted in a belief on his part that using Wikipedia meant just reading the articles, and that editing was something that someone, hypothetically, might do, but not really more likely than randomly counting to 7,744.
"WP:OUTING", the normally little-noticed policy corner of the English Wikipedia that governs the release of editors' personal information, has suddenly been brought to wider attention after long-term contributor and featured article writer Cla68 was indefinitely blocked last week. This snowballed into several other blocks, a desysopping by ArbCom, and a request for arbitration.
Three articles, six lists, and three pictures were promoted to "featured" status on the English Wikipedia this week, including the article on "Laura Secord", who was a Canadian heroine of the War of 1812 best known for warning the British of an impending American attack.
This week, we tuned to WikiProject Television Stations, a project that dates back to March 2004. WikiProject Television Stations primarily focuses on local stations, national networks, television markets, and other topics related to television channels in North America, the Caribbean, and some Pacific countries. The project has a fair bit of work ahead of them with over 4,000 unassessed articles and only one Good Article out of 626 assessed articles, giving the project a relative WikiWork rating of 5.262.

GA/DYK RfC drafting

Thanks for undertaking to do this and for letting me know. I doubt I can be of much help in the drafting - I gather my wording for the Gibraltar DYK special procedure has caused problems down the road, which is a worthwhile reminder that I don't think like a lawyer. I believe Prioryman had a multi-part RfC drafted; I hope he will work with you because that struck me at the time as well thought out. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:10, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm waiting for Prioryman's input, really :-) I'm hoping I can be of some use critiquing his wording and that of anyone else who comes on board. But I think getting a framework that allows people to express all sorts of opinions in a logical sequence will be more important than having it drafted by equal numbers from both sides on the original idea - particularly since there was more than one "side". I am pleased to announce that the Signpost and Wikizine have reached an in-principle agreement that will see Wikizine published as a special Signpost section at the beginning of each month.
During March, three of the Wikimedia Foundation's grantmaking schemes on Meta will reach important crossroads, which will shape how both the editing communities and Wikimedia institutions handle the distribution of donors' money across the movement.
Twelve articles, five lists, and eight pictures were promoted to "featured" status on the English Wikipedia this week, including an image of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, a front-engine, 2-seat luxury grand tourer automobile developed by Mercedes-AMG.
There are three open cases, and a final decision has been given in the Doncram case.
This week, we spent some time with WikiProject U.S. Supreme Court Cases.
The WMF has aborted a plan to deploy version 5 of the Article Feedback tool (AFTv5) rolled out to all English Wikipedia articles.

Newsletter

Computer modem went bonko for longer than I would have wanted, making connection impossible. Having said that, if you would want to take over the newsletter, by all means do so. I've kind of run out of ideas about what to do new with it, and think that any input from anyone else would be more than useful, and would very likely make it more interesting and useful to those who would read it. DYK-GA RFC

Stumbled upon User:Gilderien/GA-DYKRFC. Just wanted to say that in contrast to your opening paragraph I don't think there was anything wrong with the wording of your original proposal. It was just very successfully stonewalled by some experienced editors. A good indication of this is that only those that were adamantly opposed to its success started bringing up the structure of the RFC after it looked like it might succeed. Anyway, if you do go ahead and bring this one live can you drop a note at WT:GAN. Before it was closed I started making a table of the oppose !votes in preparation for starting a new RFC.

You can use it if you want. The main complaints that could possibly be addressed are worries about flooding the process with Good articles and that the two processes shouldn't be mixed. AIRcorn (talk) 23:23, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

The reason that the last proposal did not get implemented was because it failed to get the local consensus of the DYK community. While theoretically that shouldn't matter, unless you are willing to get down and dirty over this it will not pass until you get at least some of the core members of that project onside. One of the other problems you face is that there is a large division Wikiwide over DYK, with some editors adamant that no changes should occur and others that think it should be completely eliminated. My general feeling is that there is a siege mentality among some members of that project as it has been attacked (rightly and wrongly) so many times that any suggestion for change is automatically looked upon as a further attack. I don't know how you overcome that.
My editing here is predominately focused on the Good article process and the reason I don't like your proposal as written is because it takes control of main page coverage of Good articles away from the project. As soon as we start putting articles labeled as good front and centre we are going to get scrutinised to the nth degree over the articles quality. This will be a worry as many editors misunderstand what a Good article is (mainly that it is not necessarily a "good" article, but just one that meets some rather simple quality requirements). Any valid criticism of the project would most likely be welcomed, the project has flown under the radar for a while now so some fresh eyes critically evaluating it would ultimately be beneficial. However, we can't do much if we are not having a say before the article is posted. In an ideal world I would rather a single slot was reserved for a Good article. The selection process, hook design and double checking of standards could then become the responsibility of that project and any criticism that comes with it. That way the DYK process isn't flooded, it can be separated from the new DYKs and it should not increase the workload of DYK regulars. Some cooperation would be needed when it comes to putting the hooks in the templates, but I don't see how that would be an issue. It won't appease the "DYK is only for new articles" or the "DYK needs to be completely overhauled" !voters, but then again nothing proposed would.
Saying that I don't want to highjack your proposal. I was seriously thinking about making this one myself if the other failed, but did not feel strongly enough about it to go through the same fight yours went through. Selfishly I am also quite content with the status quo, even though I think this would benefit Wikipedia better as a whole. Since the first one succeeded it should have been moot anyway. Anyway the bottom line from me is that if you make your proposal as written I will support it, partly because I believe that community consensus should always trump local consensus (especially as 150 people commented) and because despite my personal reservations what you propose is likely to be a net benefit. I noticed this because you had asked for input on some editors talk pages. If you wish for further input I would recommend asking Wizardman (talk · contribs) and Pyrotec (talk · contribs) from the GA project. I don't think they were involved in the previous discussion, but they have been involved in good articles a lot longer than me and are predominately reviewers so do so for very little personal gain. I would also contact BlueMoonset (talk · contribs) and SilkTork (talk · contribs) as they gave the most convincing oppose rationals (got the most per such and such !votes at least) and in my experience they are both very easy to work with. I don't really know who the movers and shakers behind the DYK project are, but again I would be more inclined to ask for advice from those that are more concerned with reviewing submissions than nominating them. Just two months into his second term as an arbitrator on the English Wikipedia, Coren resigned from the Committee with a blistering attack on his fellow arbitrators. At the heart of a strongly worded statement, posted both on his talk page and the arbitration notice board, was the claim that ArbCom has become politicised to the extent that "it can no longer do the job it was ostensibly elected for".
This week, we composed a tribute to WikiProject Composers. The project was created during the final hours of 2004 and finalized in early January 2005. It has grown to encompass over 8,000 pages, including 26 Featured Articles and 23 Good Articles. WikiProject Composers faces a difficult workload, with a relative WikiWork rating of 5.45.
Ask librarians what they think about Wikipedia and you might get some interesting answers. Some will throw up their hands about the laziness of the Google generation and their overdependence on Wikipedia. Some see it as the "competition". And some will tell you it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Nine articles, seven lists, eleven images, and one topic were promoted to "featured status" this week on the English Wikipedia.
On Thursday, arbitrator Coren resigned, following closely on the heels of Hersfold's resignation on Wednesday. There are two open cases. A final decision has been given in the Richard case.
The WMF's engineering report for January was published this week, giving an overview of all Foundation-sponsored technical operations in that month.

Our travels have brought us to Pittsburgh, the American city known for steelworks and bridges.
Seven articles, one list, six pictures, and one topic were promoted to "featured" status on the English Wikipedia this week.
This case, brought by Mark Arsten, was opened over a dispute over transgenderism topics that began off-wiki. The evidence phase was scheduled to close March 7, 2013, with a proposed decision due to be posted by March 29.
Sue Gardner, executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation since December 2007, has announced her plans to leave the position when a successor is recruited. Ranked as one of the most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine, Sue Gardner is widely associated with the rise of the Wikimedia movement as a major custodian of human knowledge and cultural products.
Since its inception in May 2011, the Foundation's Visual Editor project has grown to become one of its main focuses. As the project nears its two-year birthday, the Signpost caught up with Visual Editor project manager James Forrester to discuss the progress on the project.
A paper presented at last month's CSCW Conference observes that "Mass collaboration systems are often characterized as unstructured organizations lacking rule and order", yet Wikipedia has a well developed body of policies to support it as an organization.

Thank you all for your interest in this effort. We would be able to achieve nothing here without the input of all of you. From the Editor

We apologise for the hiatus in the publication of this newsletter due to unforseen circumstances leading to the wikibreak of John Carter, and so I have taken over as acting editor, and have taken this opportunity to move the publication date to the start of each month as planned, to better reflect on the previous month and look ahead to the next. This issue covers the period of time from mid-January to the end of March.

Since the last issue we have seen the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis. This has received much coverage both in the world media and on Wikipedia. While there is still much work to do, several quality articles have been written and the editors involved are thanked for their efforts.


This month we look ahead to Easter and the celebration of God's love for mankind through the crucifixion and resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ. With that, I wish you all happy reading!

Contest of the month
No particular contest this month. I am however getting rather close to getting together a more or less complete set of articles relating to different areas of Christianity which can be found in recent reference sources on the broad topic of Christianity, and about various subtopics, which I hope to have finished in the next few weeks. I wonder what the rest of you might think of, maybe, making the contests of future months be basically directed at filling in the gaps of our existing coverage of topics, like those topics given significant coverage in specialized reference works which we don't yet have content on, and giving the thanks, and rewards, whatever they might be, to those who create and develop such content. I am starting a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Christianity noticeboard#Future contests, and would very much welcome any input from interested parties in how to set it up, determine winners including how many winners, etc.

Complete recording

Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe, BWV 22, a cantata by the German composer J.S. Bach, was promoted to GA this month and was written by Gerda Arendt. Many thanks for her continuing work in the area of early 18th Century Church music.

Spotlight

The Spotlight this month turns to the the Jesus work group. The scope of this project includes the life and teachings of the central figure of Christianity, Jesus Christ and aims to write about them in a non-denominational encylopædic style. Top-priority articles include Jesus, Christ, Resurrection of Jesus, and Holy Grail, whereas High-priority articles include Aramaic Language, a former FA, as well as Sermon on the Mount, Lamb of God, and Passion (Christianity). The workgroup has also published two books, covering Christ's final days and the Parables of Jesus. The workgroup has two GAs, Nativity scene, and Jesus in Islam, but unfortunately the flagship article, Jesus was delisted in 2009. It is also responsible for three WP:1.0 articles, and the WikiWork of the project is 4.56, which indicates the "average" article is between Start and C class.

Calendar
This coming month (end-March through end-April) includes Easter Sunday in Western Christianity and both Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday for the Eastern Orthodox Church. Other major feasts in the next month include those of Saint George, Saint Mark the Evangelist, Saint Stanislaus, James, son of Zebedee, and Benedict the Moor.
