one small problem is the usage of the word native in the Australian context, the word - although grammatically within range - might, be better, if it was possibly re-assigned by a synonym - (I am thinking of the way I.F.Stone used to examine the terminology of the dept of defence public relations exercise of re-assigning words during the Vietnam War) JarrahTree 04:45, 16 January 2019 (UTC)

User categories

Hello, Buaidh,

I wondered what your intention is in regard to these many user categories you created like Category:West Virginia user categories. Right now, they are empty and I've not tagged them for deletion for the past two days because they are newly created. But I hope you start assigning pages to them and using them or they will be tagged and sit for 7 days. If they are still empty after 7 days, they will be deleted. They can't sit empty indefinitely. By the way, what is with User:Buaidh/Join this regional residence category where you basically state that you live in 30 or 40 different countries. The number of categories your user pages are filed under is ridiculous and over-the-top. But, as far as I know, it doesn't break any rules. So, let's let it be. I'd ask you to trim it down to just those categories you are actually involved in, but I think your the type of editor who does what they want to do regardless. Thanks for populating the user categories. My only goal is to keep those categories that are being utilized and weeding out those that aren't useful and being used. Liz ^{Read! One of your edits may have broken Template:User_Ascension_Island/doc1

The invocation of {{yy|Template:User Commonwealth realm|Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha|||7}} is broken. I think it was working before. You have edited the relevant templates most recently, so I figured that you might know why it is broken.

{{Template:User Commonwealth realm|Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha|||7}} appears to work fine, so I'm guessing that {{yy}} may be the problem. It appears that when multiple empty fields are present, the yy template renders them, and the table interprets the adjacent pipes as a new cell. The old version of the template (now in the sandbox) simply dropped the empty parameters, which is not valid behavior either. Thank you. Template:Yy currently has a problem with null parameters. Until I can fix Template:Yy, a work around is to pass Yy a   space. Moving categories

Please, Buaidh, do not move categories. It is not like moving an article to a different title. There are pages that are assigned to each category and moving the category to a different name will not reassign all of these pages.

On Wikipedia, categories are moved by going to Speedy renames and proposing the new category name, If there are no objections, a bot moves the category AND reassigns all of the pages to the new category name. It is efficient and how categories are moved right now on Wikipedia.

Alternatively, since you have moved some categories already, please reassign all of the pages in the previously named category to the new category so there will not be two duplicate categories with different contents (see Category:Uttar Pradesh Wikipedians, Category:Uttar Pradeshi Wikipedians, Category:Telangana Wikipedians, Category:Telanganite Wikipedians, Category:Rajasthan Wikipedians, Category:Rajasthani Wikipedians for starters). It will be time-consuming and require many edits on your part but this is what happens when you do not use standard speedy rename procedures. Liz ^{Read! Talk!} 05:25, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

About those "Proud North Macedonians"

Hi Buaidh please fix Category:North_Macedonian_Wikipedians. Wikipedians in North Macedonia, regardless of their ethnicity, do not identify as "North Macedonian", and even by the Prespa agreement which changed the name of the country, they never agreed to be referred to as such. The nationality remains Macedonian. The adjective remains Macedonian. This is a sensitive issue, currently debated in a RfC, I guess there will be this type of problems for many categories, but this particular one can piss off a lot of Wikipedians. I don't think that anybody would like to find out he is a "proud North Macedonian" on his user page. Cheers. --FlavrSavr (talk) 11:46, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

The user pages in Category:Wikipedians in the Republic of Macedonia have been moved to Category:Wikipedians in North Macedonia and the category has been redirected.
The user pages in Category:North Macedonian Wikipedians have been moved to Category:Macedonian Wikipedians. The empty category still exists for now if anyone prefers to use it.
My user page in Category:North Macedonian ancestry Wikipedians has been moved to Category:Macedonian ancestry Wikipedians. The empty category still exists for now if anyone prefers to use it.

Hi. I've noticed that you've been making a significant number of edits to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Pennsylvania/Participants page over the last several weeks. A year ago, WikiProject Userboxes started updating the WikiProject userbox templates in Category:WikiProject user templates. See User_talk:Buaidh/Archive 2018#WikiProject userbox templates. This involved updating all the Category:Regional WikiProject user templates and all the Category:Multiuse regional user templates. As part of that project, I created Category:User categories by region which led to updating the documentation on all the regional user categories. That in turn led to relinking all these templates and categories to the Category:WikiProjects by region, which I apparently need to create. Please let me know if I've disrupted WikiProject Pennsylvania. (My wife is from Valley Forge and I'm of Pennsyslvania ancestry.) Also let me know if you would like to help with any of these projects. Thanks so much for your quick response and thorough explanation. Now, that I know what you're working on, your edits are making more sense to me. (I'm impressed that you've taken on this ambitious project.) Good to know about the connection of you and your wife to Valley Forge and the Great Keystone State. I grew up not far from Valley Forge, and have fond memories of attending a concert at the military academy (many, many years ago). I'm currently on a quest to clean up articles which fall within the Pennsylvania WikiProject. (Among other things, I'm trying to add infoboxes where appropriate, and am beefing up stub articles with content and new citations when I come across article subjects that interest me.) It's a fairly Herculean task; so, if you happen to see a Pennsylvania-related article or two (or twelve) that could use some tender, loving care, and have the time, please feel free to upgrade. There are a number of potentially interesting stubs and start-class articles that could use the mind of an experienced researcher-writer. I tried looking for information about orange roses in Wikipedia but I didn't find any. What's the history of orange roses? Is there a symbolic meaning of orange roses? There is nothing particularly special about orange roses. Modern Roses 12: the comprehensive list of roses in cultivation or of historical or botanical importance lists 18 color classes: white, light yellow, medium yellow, deep yellow, yellow blend, apricot, orange, orange-pink, orange-red, light pink, medium pink, deep pink, pink blend, medium red, dark red, red blend, mauve, and russet. The American Rose Society has a brief explanation of Rose Classifications. Red roses and white roses have significance in English heraldry and other colors have importance in other cultures. Non-existent categories

Before adding a category to an article, as you did to Category:Ukrainian Wikipedians, please make sure that the category page actually exists. In some cases, it may be appropriate to create a new category in accordance with Wikipedia's categorization guidelines, but it is usually better to use the most specific available existing category. It is never appropriate to leave a page categorised in a non-existent category, i.e. one whose link displays in red. Yes, there are piedmonts, but there is only one subject at Piedmont. I fixed Sicily like this by guessing that {{User in France}} would already be configured correctly. Thanks for your comments. For several years this has been the accepted way to keep vacant user categories open for future use. They are most commonly used for less populated nations and regions where we would like to recruit editors. Otherwise, we (usually I) need to recreate these user categories over and over again. They do not appear on my user page but on four special pages which explain their use. The user category is removed from the page as soon as an editor links to the user category. Geographical portals

I agree with your statements about Geographical portals on Wikipedia talk:Miscellany for deletion about new editors. It is also an issue of covering those portals. If there is an active portal, lots of other information is there about the geographical entity for editors to use. Inactive or defunct portals are much less useful, and having no portal at all means no information at all, and no easy way to find other editors interested in that place. I am definitely a Wikipedia:WikiGnome, doing most of the tasks on that page, and more besides. @Dthomsen8, the place to contact other editors is at Wikiprojects or on article talk pages, or at community noticeboards. You won't find editors at portals, because almost nobody edits portals and almost nobody reads them. As you can see from the graph on the right, 94% of portals get less than 100 pageviews per day, and in nearly all cases the head article gets 100 times more views.

Yes, that's awesome, thanks, but it would be really great if you could do the same for all the other portal redirects you created for other geographies (every Mexican state, all the countries, Indian states and U.S. states that have had their portals deleted, all of the emirates in the United Arab Emirates, etc., etc.,) These redirects are of absolutely no value to the encyclopedia. I do wish to help, but I'm not inclined to delete redirects to relevant portals that still exist. You can request the deletion of these portal redirects if you wish. It seems reasonable to me that a deleted state portal should be redirected to the relevant national portal. These redirects don't require any maintenance. I agree with UnitedStatesian that these redirects are of no value.

I'd go further, and say that they are of significantly negative value, because they cause #ifexist tests to return a positive answer. That means that a forest of categories, navboxes etc end up with links which appear to be to a specific portal, but actually redirect to a much more general portal which may say little or nothing about the specific topic.

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. I considered just renaming the category to Category:Wikipedians from Prince Edward Island, but since it would still be empty, I deleted it instead. If you find a use for recreating it, I have no objection. There are at least a few active editors who are from the Island, but none have the category on their page as far as I can tell.
