Currie Group

[edit]

Currie Group is one of South Africa’s oldest commercial and industrial property companies, founded in 1887 in Johannesburg by Richard Currie. The company has remained in continuous family operation for over five generations and has played a formative role in the evolution of property valuation and real estate services in South Africa.

History

[edit]

The origins of Currie Group date back to 1887, when Richard Currie established Richard Currie, Estate Agent, Auctioneer and Property Valuers in Johannesburg. He is widely credited with compiling one of the first Valuation Rolls for the City of Johannesburg. The business was instrumental in early municipal property classification and valuation systems.

The Currie family has maintained a deep connection with the valuation profession through its long-standing involvement in the South African Institute of Valuers (SAIV). According to Richard A. J. Currie, the founder's great-grandnephew, his great-great-uncle Richard Currie was likely one of the founding members of the Institute and served on its early committee.

Over time, the company became known for its dual role as both auctioneers and valuers, gaining prominence as one of Johannesburg’s leading firms for both fixed property and movable asset auctions by the mid-20th century.

The firm operated from a historically significant building at 112 Commissioner Street, Johannesburg, completed in 1896, which remains a landmark.

In addition to their role in the city’s development, the Currie family historically owned significant land holdings including the former Fourways Farm — a portion of which forms the modern-day Montecasino entertainment complex in Fourways, Johannesburg.

Generations of Involvement

[edit]

The Currie family’s involvement in property valuation spans five generations:

  • Richard Currie (founder, died 1923) – Founded the firm and helped compile the first Johannesburg Valuation Roll.
  • Richard R. Currie – Served on the SAIV committee and led the firm as it expanded into auctions.
  • Donald R. Currie – Third generation valuer and long-time SAIV member.
  • Richard A. J. Currie – Became a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 1968 and joined SAIV in 1973. He registered with the Department of Justice as a sworn appraiser in 1992.
  • Richard W. Currie – Fifth-generation property developer and Member of SAIV.

Operations

[edit]

Currie Group specializes in:

  • Commercial and industrial property sales and leasing
  • Tenant and landlord representation
  • Developments
  • Investment and asset advisory services

It operates across key commercial and industrial nodes in Gauteng, including Johannesburg, Waterfall, Linbro Park, Midrand, and Bryanston.

Industry Contributions

[edit]

Richard A. J. Currie has noted the evolution of the profession from personal, market-driven valuations to more algorithmic, data-based methodologies. While acknowledging the value of digital tools and access to Deeds Office sales data, he strongly advocates for the continuing relevance of experienced human valuers — particularly in complex markets such as game farms and leisure estates.

He has also raised concerns about the increasing influence of international valuation standards (e.g. RICS requirements for balance sheet valuations) potentially marginalizing locally trained professionals under South African Council of Valuers regulations.
