New Kingdom of Kush
[edit]The New Kingdom of Kush is a self-proclaimed sovereign nation and micronation, declared in 1993 as a modern restoration of the ancient Kingdom of Kush, a powerful African civilization that thrived along the Nile River in Nubia, in what is today Sudan and southern Egypt. The modern entity draws inspiration from the cultural and political legacy of the Kushite empire and claims sovereignty over Bir Tawil, an unclaimed territory located between Egypt and Sudan.
Ancient Kingdom of Kush
[edit]The ancient Kingdom of Kush (circa 1070 BCE–350 CE) was a major power in Northeast Africa, known for its rich culture, monumental architecture, and powerful rulers. It emerged after the collapse of the New Kingdom of Egypt, establishing its capital at Napata and later at Meroë. The Kingdom of Kush conquered and ruled Egypt as the 25th Dynasty (circa 744–656 BCE), during which Kushite pharaohs governed as far north as the Nile Delta.
Kushite civilization is noted for its distinctive pyramids, its ironworking industry, and its role as a center of trade connecting Central Africa with the Mediterranean world. The kingdom eventually declined and fell around 350 CE, likely due to internal strife and invasions by the Kingdom of Aksum.[1]
Modern History and Proclamation
[edit]The New Kingdom of Kush was officially proclaimed on June 13, 1993, by a group of individuals identifying as Kushites, Nubians, Ababda, and members of the African diaspora. The declaration was led by Mansa Suliman Al Kushi, who is recognized as the founder of the modern kingdom. The movement aims to restore the cultural identity, heritage, and sovereignty of Kushite descendants.
In a formal press release issued on September 19, 2023, during a United Nations forum, Her Majesty Queen Mother Delois Blakely publicly announced the birth of the New Kingdom of Kush under the authority of the Constitutive Assembly, claiming Bir Tawil as its territory and seat of governance.[2]
Further independent confirmation of the Kingdom’s formation and Queen Mother Blakely’s role appeared in The Turtle Island News, a Canadian Indigenous news outlet, which in December 2024 described Queen Mother Blakely as "Queen of the recently formed country of Kush."[3]
