Union Township is a township in Holt County, Missouri, United States.[2] At the 2020 census, its population was 224.[3] It is the largest township in the county being around 60 square miles. Craig is located in the township's center.

History

Union Township was settled in the early 1840s, at Sharpe's Grove[4], but its establishment date is unknown.[5]

Marietta was first settled circa 1844[4] and was established March 15, 1854[6], was a community on the east bank of the Missouri River near Lewisville.[7]

A post office and river landing named Rush Bottom was located southwest of Craig along the east bank of the Missouri River.[7] The post office, named Rushbottom, existed from 1850 to 1871.[8] Rush Bottoms Conservation Area is where the settlement used to be.[9]

A hamlet called Tarkio, also known as Big Spring, was located in the northern portion of Union township, about 1.75 miles northwest of Craig, along the Big Tarkio Creek.[7] There was a post office named Tarkio from 1843 to 1869.[10]

The Kansas City, St. Joseph, and Council Bluffs Railroad was completed through this township in 1869.
