Edit request 9 April 2024

[edit]

Description of suggested change: Much like what is already in {{Template:WikiProject United States}}, Could provincial/territorial WikiProject importance be added as a parameter so that (for example) certain articles that would be considered Top-importance in a province/territory yet lower (mid-high for ex.) Canada-wise could be correctly specified? This is already being done for cities that have WikiProjects and it would be incredibly helpful if the provinces/territories also had their own importance rating as well. Thanks!

Diff: all province/territorial-specifying parameters (example "on=") would also have a specifying importance parameter (example "on-importance=")

Not done for now: B3251 please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{Edit template-protected}} template. Consensus should probably be reached at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Canada to make sure that the WikiProject wants to maintain that parameter. --Ahecht (TALK

I need help creating a consensus-based proposal. I don't know how to do it. B3251 (talk) 20:29, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 13 April 2024

[edit]

Description of suggested change: This is completely different from my requested edit above. I've noticed that "TF_(number)_MAIN_CAT = WikiProject (wikiproject) articles" is included in only a limited number of WikiProjects and I'd like to request for it to be added to either the rest, to the provincial WikiProjects, or at least New Brunswick (the project I work on).

Adding this will place all articles under a WikiProject into their respective WikiProject article categories. Currently, most WikiProject article categories are empty (such as the one I actively work on, see Category:WikiProject New Brunswick articles). Leaving these categories without their respective articles causes issues such as JL-Bot's WP:RECOG tool not working (see Wikipedia:WikiProject New Brunswick/Recognized content). I would like to request for, in this example, " |TF_4_MAIN_CAT = WikiProject New Brunswick articles" to be added in the template in order to allow for tools such as RECOG to work.

Please let me know if I need consensus on this. Thanks. B3251 (talk) 14:59, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've added it for New Brunswick. Not in principle opposed but I think it would make more sense to wait for a need to pop up before adding it to all 30 task forces indiscriminately. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:09, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Much appreciated, Thank you. B3251 (talk) 19:12, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Province parameters

[edit]

The two letter abbreviations for provinces are capitalised (for example "MB" for Manitoba), yet the template allows only lower case ("mb"). Would it possible to amend the template to also accept upper case for the province parameters? --Jameboy (talk) 12:26, 15 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Provincial importance parameters

[edit]

Similar to the above discussion on 9 April 2024, I would like to see provincial importance parameters added to this template so that I can better sort out the articles for WP:NOVASCOTIA by their importance to the province. I don't really see any reason why we shouldn't. Any thoughts? MediaKyle (talk) 17:18, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Example pls Template:WikiProject Canada/sandbox Moxy🍁 07:16, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't know where to start, but I'm guessing it would be done in the same way as how Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver were given a separate importance value. I mostly just want an ns-importance value personally but I see no reason why every province can't have one. MediaKyle (talk) 10:07, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's not difficult, mainly because the categories already exist. The main thing to consider is: if the parameter for the province importance is blank or absent, should the importance for Canada as a whole be used instead? In this edit, I have shown two different ways of coding an importance parameter.
All of this is ignored if the relevant province parameter - |on=yes or |qc=yes - is not set. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:59, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the demonstration. I thought about it and I think the first option would be most suitable given the purpose of sorting articles by importance. Would be nice if there was some way to automatically assign low importance to all of the geography articles though, that way we don't have to go and assign an importance to every one of the hundreds of community geostubs. MediaKyle (talk) 14:26, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
OK, this edit for Nova Scotia adds a new |ns-importance= parameter, to populate the relevant subcategory of Category:Nova Scotia articles by importance; if blank or omitted, the value of |geography= is tested, and if that evaluates to a "yes" value, |ns-importance=low will be implied, so articles will only be placed in Category:Unknown-importance Nova Scotia articles if (i) |ns-importance= is blank or absent and (ii) |geography= is blank, absent or evaluates to a "no" value. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:07, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 15 April 2025

[edit]

As discussed above, I would like to add an ns-importance parameter in the same manner as this diff provided by Redrose64.

In addition, similar to the edit request on 13 April 2024, please add "TF_(number)_MAIN_CAT = WikiProject (wikiproject) articles" to Nova Scotia in the same manner as it was done for New Brunswick so that WP:NOVASCOTIA can also use the recognized content bot. Thanks, MediaKyle (talk) 01:32, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done ..... I've implemented the first part of this request. Can we get the exact coding for the second request. Moxy🍁 01:56, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. Guess I should've been more specific on the second part, see this example for what I believe is how you do the second part of the request. MediaKyle (talk) 02:04, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
 Done....ping back if there's a problem Moxy🍁 03:31, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@MediaKyle: In your original request of 17:18, 7 April 2025 (UTC) I got the impression that you wanted province importance for all provinces, although Nova Scotia was the one that you mainly wanted this for. Is it not required for the other nine provinces? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 17:15, 16 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for reaching out. That was my initial thought, but I realized after the fact that there doesn't seem to be a lot of will to make those sweeping changes as evidenced by the edit request on 13 April 2024. Given the relative inactivity of most provincial WikiProjects at this time, I didn't know if it was worth the trouble to look for consensus on the topic. I generally like to approach the provincial WikiProjects in a "if you build it they will come" mindset so I definitely wouldn't be opposed to adding it to every province.
