- Ref 3 only directly says that the black shape represents the mainland without mentioning the peninsulas. Attached refs don't verify the 16 in "on 16 March 1994" unlike this I found. Refs attacted to "the top and bottom curves symbolizing winds and waves, respectively" don't say that they each concept is connected to each curve, just that both curves are generally connected to both of them. - Neutral:

Overall: 
Created on day of nom and sized at 2132 B. Image is a government-mandated flag and is PD in the US as a government edict. No need to use alt hooks; the ALT0 checks out. Same goes for neutrality and (in almost all the time) sourcing. @Yue: fix the issues and you're good to go.
Oh, and while it's technically optional, to make it longer, I also suggest adding after "islands to the west and southwest of Kyushu" sourced to ref 3: Shimono criticized this as "clearly a design of the Satsugū mainland", perceiving it as discrimination against the island's residents and noting that the islands, which housed a fifth of the prefecture's population, allow the prefecture to prosper with its tourism and signature products.
And any chance you can fit a hook on this, because I feels even more intriguing. ALT0 is my first choice if not. ミラP@Miraclepine 20:21, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Miraclepine: I read 薩隅本土 as a compound name, i.e. "Satsuma–Ōsumi mainland". Regardless, I replaced the Shimono 2005 citation with the existing withnews (The Asahi Shimbun) article, which is more explicit: "ところが、大隅、薩摩半島を黒く ..." I also don't think it's necessary to attribute the Shibushi Bay representation to Toshimi Shimono specifically, as it isn't a unique observation given the shape of the prefecture. An alternative hook about the criticism might be:

- @Miraclepine: Sakurajima isn't an island anymore, but when the flag was designed it was and the red circle is supposed to represent an island. I think being less specific in this case isn't the better choice, as the locals' grievances are specifically in regard to the outlying islands. Saying it's all of the prefecture's islands isn't really in the spirit of the critique. Also, if ALT3 or its variants is chosen over ALT0 or its variants, then I don't think the image of the flag is necessarily required because the hook isn't describing it in detail. Speaking of which, I should probably include an image of the topography in the nominated article. Yue🌙 05:13, 21 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Yue: Actually, Sakurajima stopped becoming an island in 1914, 53 years before the flag was designed. Still, I see your points with specifying the islands and not using the flag, so given length I'll let the promoter decide on using "western and southwestern" or "outlying" (forgot that was an option) or whether or not to use the flag or topography.
