Rename to European identity card(s)

[edit]

Is there any consensus to renaming the article to 'European identity cards' or 'European identity card'? I put forward this idea as now the EU standard is relatively well-established and the corresponding article for Driving licences in the EEA is named 'European driving licence'. To have harmony between the two similar articles. Drumstick21 (talk) 19:24, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Some time ago, someone created a parallel European card page here on Wikipedia. We talked a bit on this kind of stuff (even about the European driving licence) and we decided to close the article and to point to this one, without renaming it. That's because any country gives a different meaning to this card for history and culture (and if you're European you know how different we are) and has its own way to issue it. The 2019 EU directives just suggest the path to a common model, but never mention a European card. In my opinion there's no need to rename, because it could be misleading for a non-European reader. But it's just my opinion, so I'm open to any kind of decision. Kroby36 (talk) 17:07, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is a uniform format for the European driving licence. For the national identity cards there are only some common security features. That's a big difference. Furthermore, "national identity card" is the common name for it, not "European identity card". So no need to move any article. --Nablicus (talk) 17:14, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
While I agree, the current page name is too long. Perhaps a compromise name would be "National identity Cards in Europe" ZElsb (talk) 17:10, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would argue that there is a uniform format for national identity cards as there is for driving licences in the EU/EEA. EU flag, fields, MRZ, photo, format (ID1 size), biometrics, etc. perhaps even more prescriptive than driving licences in terms of being a uniform format. Re-name to "Identity card(s) in the European Union"

[edit]

After almost two years we still haven't found a solution for the title. So I propose a simple and rational idea: we could give it a name for what it actually is, that is, a model of identity card due to a law of the European Union. In this way, we can keep entirely the content of the article, simply by highlighting that other EEA countries and Switzerland joined the harmonization and by splitting in two the table that illustrates the images of any national card (one table for EU members and another one for associated members). What do you think? Kroby36 (talk) 09:34, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Neutral: Why not 'European identity card'? As per European driving licence. Driving licences are also defined by a similar EU directive, and apply EU/EEA wide.
Otherwise yes 'Identity cards in the European Union' with respective sections for EEA/EFTA states is also logical. This pagemove needs to be settled. Drumstick21 (talk) 03:51, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate your constant effort to make this article better, but the weak point of your suggestion is that you proposed it for the first time in 2023 and then we discussed it even later (because part of the discussion was deleted by a bot and I don't know why) and so far we have not found an agreement on this. In addition, since Switzerland was added the title is too long and also I must admit that the concept of "European Economic Area" does not sound familiar to anyone (yes, over time I've changed my mind about this thing!).
What I say is: let's move on! Otherwise the title will remain what it is forever. I think it is clear that most of us do not want the involvement of the identity cards of other European countries outside the influence of the European Union. The problem remains between the choice of a solution similar to "European driving licence" and a solution similar to "Passports of the European Union". If the first one is not liked enough by most of us, then let's move on to the second one. Simple as that. Kroby36 (talk) 18:04, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
