Heraldry

Lapland itself was never considered a duchy but on January 18, 1884 the Privy Council gave all Provinces the right of use to a dukal coronet for their arms.

The Finnish version has reversed the tinctures for the shield and the wildman in natural colors and it has kept the original countal coronet. Blazon Finnish version: "Gules, a Wildman stantant proper wrapped with birch leaves Vert on the head and around the waist holding a Club Or in dexter over the shoulder." The wildman occures first on Carta marina (1539) and have a head cap of birch leaves, depicting a mytical hero called Starkad; the red color might associate to Birkarlian's coats.

Laponia: Finland, Sweden or both

User:Pko has taken up the practice of moving this article to Laponia (historical province of Finland). I would recommend stopping this practice. Laponia is a historical entity (prior 1809), which includes areas now both in Finland and in Sweden. I fail to understand how any subsequent changes in national borders could change the meaning of a term pertaining to the Nordic history of middle ages and the early modern era. --MPorciusCato (talk) 07:35, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

– Laponia is not a commonly used name for these historical provinces. Instead, Laponia most commonly refers to the Laponian area, and the name that is used for these provinces is Lapland (or Swedish Lappland). Both of these articles are completely unsourced, and hence the article names are also unsourced. Here are some references which refer to the region in historical context: [1][2]. For background. Many of the Swedish and Finnish historical province articles were originally created under these Latin names, e.g. Westrogothia for Västergötland (see User:Mic/Notes#Geography for a list). However, the Latin names are the WP:COMMONNAMES only in rare cases like Ostrobothnia, and for example Westrogothia was moved already in 2005. Since no one else has yet commented here, I've taken the liberty of updating the nomination. Laponian area is the primary topic for Laponia in English since the establishment of the World Heritage Site in 1996 and the updated move proposal now reflects that. "Laponian area" is the WP:officialname, but "Laponia" is more concise and seems more common.
