Gay and Lesbian Pride Month

According to various news sources, President Clinton proclaimed June "Gay and Lesbian Pride Month", yet I haven't seen anything about this on Wikipedia, under this article or the ones on Clinton, LGBT History month, June observances, or LGBT. TigressofIndia (talk) 02:56, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Origin of name

In his Fasti, Ovid claims that the month is named after youths, "iuniores", in contrast to the previous month, May, named after elders, "maiores". Something should be said about this in the article. Erik the Red 2 (AVE·CAESAR) 01:57, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

North Korea invades South Korea?

What's this about "The Democratic People's Republic of Korea invades the Republic of Korea."? Does that happen every June? I'm assuming that has happened in the past, so that doesn't belong here. I'm erasing it. CayenneGaramonde (talk) 21:32, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Ovid Forgot One

One of the ancient historians (Tacitus? Suetonius? Dio?) mentions that June was to be changed to the name of an emperor due not only to the fact that the event that occurred to warrant the months original name change (Marcus Junius Brutus' overthrow of Rome's final king) was by then ancient history but also the Junius name was sullied by a latter Marcus Junius Brutus participating in an assassination. There is no disambiguation at the start of the article. Most other months do, for example May: This article is about the month. For other uses, see May (disambiguation). I'd think June is somewhat normal as given name. 85.217.21.90 (talk) 22:55, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Repeated removal of LGBT Pride month

@Stevenjohan988. Thank you for offering some kind of explanation for your removal. Regarding the reasons you gave in your edit summary...

1-this month is not celebrated worldwide its only in fact most of the world doesn't celebrate it. This appears to be true of every item on the list, with the exception of the Sacred Heart one. Do you object to the other list entries?

2-the pride month didn't exist and wasn't celebrated until 2021 (atleast outside usa). So? It's been celebrated intermittently in the US for about 2 decades. I don't see why it should matter that it has only recently begun spreading to other nations.

3-no wonder why the most islamophobic and christianophobia countries like Israel for example are the ones celebrating it. I don't see how this comment is relevant to the topic. Squeakachu (talk) 07:03, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

• File:2018 San Francisco Pride.jpg's caption should describe both the immediate context of the image and the background, rather than just the latter.

Reviewing now. I am not familiar with the topic, but will try.

General comments

• Based on which criteria did you select the people and the observances listed in this article? Did you try to select the most important ones (but what does "importance" mean here exactly?), or is it just a random list based on personal taste? For example, why is African-American Music Appreciation Month not in the list? Why is Messi in the people's list but not Lord Kelvin?

  I choose all international single-day observances (e.g. holidays observed in two or more countries) that had WP entries. For the multi-day events, I also went by observances which were notable enough to have WP articles, but I tried to not have too many solely American ones and African-American Music Appreciation Month seems a bit specific/specialist in comparison with stuff like Pride Month or Caribbean-American Heritage Month. The people were selected based on lists like The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History, and other GAs do have subjective lists similar to this, i.e. 2001 § Events. But I would certainly be willing to remove the Births and Deaths section if it violates OR. I think it is relevant though considering year articles sometimes have these.

• I am unsure why we have to list birthdays and deaths of people, while not listing historical anniversaries, which seem more important to me?

  The anniversary days of events seem more relevant than the anniversary months. Though for some reason birthday months seem more popular, as is perhaps illustrated by birthstones and flowers being specific to months, and Zodiac signs being over roughly 30-day–long periods.

Specific comments

• Fun fact is that no other month of a given year starts with the same day as June (e.g., no other month this year starts on Sunday). Could be mentioned?

• Does that apply to every year? :O

• June 2023 and June 2024 had the highest average temperature of all Junes in history, could also be mentioned.

• Added.

• Roman emperors Nero and Commodus renamed the month; even though this didn't last long, it seems quite pertinent to this particular article and is worth mentioning.

• Oh, very pertinent! Good idea; I have added sentences on these—very fascinating and I never knew. They really pulled a Saparmurat Niyazov.

• The Dragon Boat Festival, observed in China and by the Chinese communities of Southeast Asia, may commence between late May and mid-June. – Why is this under "Single-day observances" if it's not a single day?

• Fixed and added clarification.

• The following are global holidays which are formally observed by the United Nations – World Milk Day is not in the list but was created by the UN?

• It is not on the UN's calendar for some reason; it seems they only created it but they do not formally observe it.

• Why are other calendars mentioned in "Religious single-day observances" but not the Chinese one?

• It aligns with the Gregorian calendar, unlike the other mentioned calendars, so Chinese holidays can be mentioned.

• The first day of June commences with International Children's Day – only in some countries, mostly it is the 20 November, so this is a bit misleading.

• Added a note.

• As of 5 February 2025, June last occurred 144 days ago (UTC); it will be June again on 1 June 2025. – That it will be June again on 1 June is not a helpful information, that goes without saying. I would suggest to either add the days until next June, or delete the whole sentence.

• I removed the last part.
