Ikea into Hotel venture with Marriott International
[edit]This news have been recently reported so I suggest adding this information under other venture section
Ikea have a joint venture with Marriott International to open a new hotel line under the name Moxy which is a 3 star hotel
The hotels won't use IKEA furniture or its designers, but Inter IKEA devised what it calls novel construction techniques to trim construction costs. Many rooms will be prefabricated and then assembled like IKEA furniture, a modular type of construction that is new for Marriott. The first hotel, in Milan, is supposed to open in 2014.

Dutch or Swedish?
[edit]Is IKEA Dutch or Swedish?
I'd argue it's Swedish. An IP address editor begs to differ, saying it's Dutch.
I'm pretty sure it counts as Swedish. That's what the article has said for a long time. References seem to say it is. It was founded by Swedish people in Sweden. Its first stores were in Sweden. They serve Swedish food. All their products have Swedish names.
There's only a couple of things that could make it Dutch. The first is that their headquarters is in the Netherlands, which is the only reason the IP gave, though I would argue that this doesn't mean a thing, as other businesses have HQs in different places to their nationality. Also, the full company name is Inter IKEA Systems B.V., and I think "BV" is a Dutch incorporation type.
Perhaps it counts as Swedish-Dutch? Strugglehouse (talk) 17:47, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Companies have a nationality? Do they have passports as well? 77.3.139.162 (talk) 08:19, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
- I think Wikipedia should make guidelines as what counts for corporation's nationality.
- I've seen a lot of companies founded in Europe that has changed headquarters and incorporated themselves in the United States, describing the companies as American. And I've also seen examples such as IKEA, where the nationality is based upon founding country, and not legal place of incorporation.
- Personally I would argue for sticking to the most parent legal entity of an organization's place of incorporation, which would make IKEA be considered Dutch. TheRealMangoDK (talk) 14:04, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- Usually, with most corporate groups, there are one or two parent entities that one can point to as the basis for its nationality. In this case, we have a bunch of Dutch entities but there are also two Liechtenstein entities at the top of the hierarchy. So I would say this was originally a Swedish company which grew into a corporate group whose key entities are mostly incorporated in the Netherlands but two of its parent entities are Liechtenstein entities. --Coolcaesar (talk) 15:01, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- I would say it's better to say "company founded in [original country of origin] and based in [current HQ country]" for such cases. Tube·of·Light 15:03, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
Adding a subtopic for the IKEA Roblox Marketing Campaign
[edit]The New Roblox Ikea Marketing gives Roblox players the ability to get wages for working at the virtual IKEA in Roblox. Perhaps adding a topic under Marketing could be possible? 173.199.199.204 (talk) 05:20, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
- Do you have reliable sources that discuss the significance of this marketing effort as a distinct topic? 331dot (talk) 08:38, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

When was the first store opened?
[edit]As of the time of this writing, there are conflicting reports on when the first IKEA store opened. In the History section of the article, we are told the first store was opened in 1958:
The first store was opened in Älmhult, Småland, Sweden in 1958, under the name Möbel-IKÉA (Möbel means "furniture" in Swedish).
But the citation right before that tells us that the first store was opened in 1953.
Kamprad, who is eighty-five, opened the first IKEA store there, in 1953.
So, which is it? ProfessorTom (talk) 16:23, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- UPDATE: The Encyclopedia Britannica article for IKEA claims that the brand was conceived in 1943, the first showroom was opened in 1953, but the first retail store wasn't opened until 1958. So I suppose this comes down to which source is more credible AND the definition of "store". ProfessorTom (talk) 22:45, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- The IKEA museum's website claims the first store was in 1958. I'd say that was a pretty reliable source. The only question is whether or not I can cite it via Wikipedia's rules. ProfessorTom (talk) 22:48, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
- It turns out that the founder, Ingvar Kamprad, dictated a book to Bertil Torekull entitled The IKEA Story, a copy of which can be found on Archive.org
- I'm still not sure about Wikipedia's citation policy (this could be considered a primary source, although the book was translated into English which, to my mind, makes it at least a secondary source). Presumably the answer is in the book if someone was willing to read it. ProfessorTom (talk) 23:15, 28 July 2025 (UTC)
