COI Edit Request 11, November 2024
[edit]![]() | This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. |
- What I think should be changed (include citations):
Hello, I am an employee of Dan Abrams. His Wikipedia page is dated, so we are trying to update the information, namely the introductory paragraphs and his picture. We do not want to insert any biases but simply want to add the information with their corresponding citations. Here is our updated info with citations:
Daniel Abrams (born May 20, 1966)[1] is an American media entrepreneur,[2] television host,[3] and NY Times bestselling author.[4][5][6] He sold Law&Crime in October 2023 to video content startup Jellysmack in a deal reportedly worth $125 million.[7] He is also the owner of the media and politics site, Mediaite, and other digital properties such as the fine spirits and events company Bottle Raiders[8] and is the proprietor of EV&Em Vineyards, named after his children Everett and Emilia, in New York's North Fork.[9][10]
On television, Abrams is the host of the prime-time show Dan Abrams Live on NewsNation,[11] On Patrol: Live on Reelz,[12] and creator and host of Court Cam, a Law&Crime production on A&E.[13] He is also the Chief Legal Analyst for ABC News[14] and host of a daily radio show, The Dan Abrams Show: Where Politics Meets The Law[15][16] on SiriusXM's P.O.T.U.S. channel.
He has written numerous books: Man Down: Proof Beyond a Reasonable Doubt That Women Are Better Cops, Drivers, Gamblers, Spies, World Leaders, Beer Tasters, Hedge Fund Managers and Just About Everything Else, which was a Washington Post Bestseller;[17] Lincoln's Last Trial: The Murder Case That Propelled Him to the Presidency; Theodore Roosevelt for the Defense: The Courtroom Battle to Save His Legacy; John Adams Under Fire: The Founding Father's Fight for Justice in the Boston Massacre Murder Trial, all of which spent multiple weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list.[18][19] Most recently, he released Kennedy's Avenger: Assassination, Conspiracy, and the Forgotten Trial of Jack Ruby and Alabama v. King: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Criminal Trial That Launched the Civil Rights Movement.
Abrams was the host of Live PD on the A&E cable network and was formerly an anchor of Nightline. He also worked as the chief legal correspondent and analyst for NBC News and general manager of MSNBC, and doubled as an anchor for the same network.[20][21][22] He began his professional career in 1994 as a reporter for Court TV, covering, among others, the O.J. Simpson murder trial.[23]
- Why it should be changed: The page should be updated because it is significantly out of date.
2020AM2009 (talk) 18:44, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
Not Done. That looks like far too much info to be placing in the intro section, and the list of books is clearly highly promotional (contrary to your comment above). As a general guideline, the intro should be an overview, the details should be in the body of the article.
- If you are looking to massively expand the intro with material that is already within the article then the answer is, no you can't do that. If you are looking to massively expand the intro with material that isn't already within the article, the answer is no the material belongs in the body of the article.
- If you wish to make specific sourced changes then I suggest you make a further request, specifying clearly what the additions are, rather than providing a large section of re-written text and expecting volunteers to work that out for themselves. However, most of new the material ought to be going in the body of the article.
- The present article was also tagged as being of a promotional nature in Sept 24, which is an issue that you may wish to contribute to resolving, rather than trying to make the situation worse than it is at present.
- Also, I note that you were warned on your talk page about making promotional edit to the Dan Abrams article back in 2021, but continued to do so for 3 years until we reach the present situation where you are largest single contributor to the article and then two weeks ago you declare a conflict of interest. That is a very poor show indeed. Axad12 (talk) 16:59, 12 November 2024 (UTC)
- Our goal here is not to make the page more self-promotional, but rather just the opposite: to make it shorter and more accurate. We completely agree that the current structure doesn't work. We are happy to help make the page much more succinct because someone else, not us, included much of the detail about his career that is now either outdated or irrelevant. So, we are all in agreement that the page needs work, we just need some advice on how to make it better comply with the standards. Our idea for editing is to remove the surplus of section headers (that have already been flagged as too many by Wikipedia) and add details about Abrams' current projects and entrepreneurial work, which is not on the page as it stands. Please advise. Thanks. 2020AM2009 (talk) 20:13, 25 November 2024 (UTC)

Changes to the page
[edit]![]() | This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered. |
Hello, I work for Dan Abrams. I see that there are two tags on his page regarding promotional content and too many section headers. I have edited in the past without disclosing my connection to Abrams and without following the proper guidelines, but I have since read through the guidelines and consulted with someone who has experience with this matter. I have disclosed my conflict of interest on my user page, understand the COI process, and plan to act in accordance with these policies.
In order to address the issues mentioned in the tags, I have redrafted the Career section of the page to appear in paragraph form rather than multiple subsections. I have also attempted to edit the text to remove promotional content. Please consider replacing the existing information if you feel that I successfully addressed the concerns, and if not, I'd appreciate further feedback.

Career[edit]Television and broadcasting[edit]
Abrams started his career working at Court TV, where he covered the O. J. Simpson case,[1] the International Criminal Court from the Netherlands, and the assisted-suicide trials of Dr. Jack Kevorkian from Michigan.[2]
In March 2011, Abrams left NBC to become the Chief Legal Analyst for ABC News and a substitute anchor on Good Morning America.[11] In 2016, Abrams became the host of Live PD. Aired on A&E, the show offered live coverage of on- duty police. Live PD was canceled on June 10, 2020, in the wake of protests against police brutality following the murder of George Floyd.[14]
In 2021 Abrams joined NewsNation to host a nightly prime-time show called Dan Abrams Live.[18] On December 19, 2024, Abrams announced that he would end his show effective in February 2025, though

In 2011, Abrams Media started The Mary Sue,[26] a partner site to Geekosystem with the goal of "highlighting women in the geek world, and providing a prominent place for the voices of geek women."[27] In 2014, Abrams folded Geekosystem into The Mary Sue.[28] On November 17, 2021, The Mary Sue was acquired by GAMURS Group.[29]
In 2016, Abrams started LawNewz, a legal news website which also live streams trials as part of its online network.[30] The new live trial network, promoted as the new Court TV, launched on February 24, 2017, with A&E Networks taking a stake in the site.[31][32] In 2017, LawNewz was rebranded to Law&Crime.[33][34][35] In October 2023, Abrams sold Law&Crime to video content startup Jellysmack[36] for a reported $125 million.[37]

Thanks for your help, 2020AM2009 (talk) 18:30, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for declaring your COI and providing a draft.
- It is more effective to follow Wikipedia:Edit requests closely, keeping suggested changes short with clear explanations. For situations like this where you'd like to see large changes, work in small portions.
- Note that interviews, press releases, and similar references may not be suitable for BLP information. See WP:BLPRS and WP:NOT. --Hipal (talk) 20:10, 18 February 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks Hipal, I appreciate your feedback. I'm not sure how to break this edit request into smaller portions, since I am trying to remove the subheadings which run throughout the entire article. I went back over the original request highlighting my suggested additions and crossing out my suggested deletions so you can see exactly what I am proposing. Please note that although a few paragraphs are crossed out, I didn't remove the information, rather I reorganized it so it would appear chronologically. I focused on the content and not the sourcing which already exists on the page, but I have taken note of the sourcing guidelines and I will keep them in mind for future requests. I hope you'll take a look. 2020AM2009 (talk) 15:14, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

Hi there. As discussed above, I've removed the excessive headers and promotional content from the article. Assuming the edits address the issues flagged in the current maintenance tags at the top of the page, could those be removed now as well? Thanks for your attention here. 2020AM2009 (talk) 16:24, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the work. I still see heavy reliance on public relations pieces as references rather than independent sources. --Hipal (talk) 18:19, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- Done. Gommeh (talk/contribs) 21:02, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
- I don't believe those are necessarily PR pieces. This article is about a notable news anchor - it makes sense that his news network would have articles on its platform regarding him and his programs. Gommeh (talk/contribs) 21:43, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback, GommehGaming101 and Hipal. I spent a long time going through the sources. I have now replaced many of them with sources that are independent and more suited to Wikipedia standards. Please take a look and let me know if this is sufficient for removing the tag. Hipal, I understand that you are concerned with promotional content on the page. Would you please point to examples of things you find problematic so they can be addressed? Thank you, 2020AM2009 (talk) 16:19, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- @2020AM2009 I removed the RFC below since there seems to be a consensus here. I agree with the other editors who have replied to your question. A RFC seems like a waste of time for this question. Nemov (talk) 15:26, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
Thanks for the cleanup. Of the five references from the first ten that I identified on my talk page, three remain: #2, 6, 7. Should we discuss them? #4 has the same link as #3, which is of similar quality. The Variety and Hollywood Reporter pieces aren't much better. Maybe we should try to identify the better sources first? Do we have any in-depth reporting on him? --Hipal (talk) 16:48, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- IMO they should be kept but we should also try to find reputable sources to back them up. Gommeh (talk/contribs) 16:51, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- I agree, unless someone can point out sources that clearly don't belong in a BLP at all. --Hipal (talk) 19:41, 26 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, Hipal and GommehGaming101. I've tried to follow your advice, adding additional, more reputable sources in the specific places you mentioned, without deleting those that were already on the page. If you feel like there are now too many sources, feel free to delete those that you deem unnecessary. The facts on the page are backed by solid sourcing, so I hope we can now move towards tag removal. 2020AM2009 (talk) 17:51, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
- If you want to follow the advice given, we'd be discussing sources rather than throwing more in without apparently understanding what's needed. --Hipal (talk) 18:24, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
- No problem, Hipal, what did you want to discuss? 2020AM2009 (talk) 16:45, 1 April 2025 (UTC)

Do we have any in-depth reporting on him?
--Hipal (talk) 18:34, 1 April 2025 (UTC)- I've identified these sources as in-depth reporting on Dan Abrams
- Wall Street Journal
- New York Times
- New York Times
- BI
- There are many others on the page that don't go into great depth, but cover the information included in the article. 2020AM2009 (talk) 15:42, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for those.
- The WSJ and Business Insider pieces have almost no depth.
- The NYTimes piece by Green has a bit, focusing on his personal life.
- The NYTimes piece by Stevenson has some depth, again focusing on his personal life. --Hipal (talk) 22:05, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for your feedback. I'm going to open this discussion to the wider community as well. 2020AM2009 (talk) 15:17, 3 April 2025 (UTC)
- Do you understand why? If not, I'm afraid you'll become very frustrated. That's why I think we should be discussing sources. --Hipal (talk) 20:04, 3 April 2025 (UTC)
- I'm happy to discuss whatever you want. 2020AM2009 (talk) 14:21, 7 April 2025 (UTC)

Rfc: tag removal
[edit]The Dan Abrams article has been edited to fix issues flagged by maintenance tags. You can see the edits that have been made here: Special:diff/1280984706
Should the tags now be removed? 2020AM2009 (talk) 14:22, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- I'm being bold and removing this RFC. The discussion above is sufficient for this question and a community wide RFC for a question about a tag is a waste of time. Thanks! Nemov (talk) 15:24, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks, Nemov, but I'm actually confused by the above conversation. The two editors who commented had different opinions, and I would really like to get some clarity on the issue. Would you be willing to take a look at the article and weigh in? I thought that Rfc was the correct way to get additional input, but please let me know if you have a better idea. 2020AM2009 (talk) 14:11, 9 April 2025 (UTC)

Hello, I would like to update the article with the following information: In the Early life section, please add:
Abrams is a graduate of Duke University.[1]
And in the second paragraph of the Television and Broadcasting subsection, where it says, "After 5 years, he accepted a managerial position at MSNBC", please change the sentence to read: "After 5 years he became the General Manager of MSNBC". The current source that's on the page can still be used.
