Communist Party of India

[edit]

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (abbr. CPI(M)) is a communist political party in India.[3] It is one of the national parties of India.[5] The party emerged from a split from the Communist Party of India in 1964. The CPI(M) was formed in Calcutta from 31 October to 7 November 1964.

As of 2021, CPI(M) is leading the state government in Kerala and has representation in the following Legislative assemblies in the states of Tripura, Assam, Rajasthan, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.[6] The Politburo is the supreme authority of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).[7] However, in between two party congresses, the Central Committee is the highest decision making body.[7]

History

[edit]

Name[edit] Communist Party of India (Marxist)

AKG Bhavan, the CPI(M) national headquarters in Delhi 28°37′53.6″N 77°12′17.9″E CPI(M) is officially known as भारत की कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी मार्क्सवादी (Bharat ki Kamyunist Party Marksvadi) in Hindi, but it is often known as मार्क्सवादी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी (Marksvadi Kamyunist Party, abbreviated MaKaPa) in press and media circles. During its initial years after the split, the party was often referred to by different names such as 'Left Communist Party' or 'Communist Party of India (Left)'. The party has used the name 'Left' because CPI people were dubbed as a rightist in nature for their support of the Congress-Nehru regime. During the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections of 1965, the party adopted the name 'Communist Party of India (Marxist)' and applied to obtain its election symbol from the Election Commission of India.[8]

Ideology in infobox

[edit]

I don't get where the "instruction" commentary in the infobox comes from. What would be the objection to putting M-L as ideology in infobox? -- Soman (talk) 20:57, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Leadership

[edit]

The higher body of CPI is secretariat. So please re add the list. Arjun Madathiparambil Muraleedharan (talk) 15:48, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Arjun Madathiparambil Muraleedharan The section I removed seemed to have dozens of names without explanation on why that was needed in this page specifically. I think I didn't understand if the secretariat is the highest governing body of CPI, or it's just another committee in there.
If it's all the leadership of the party then I agree it should be re-added, sorry for reverting you. Maybe we should also add a line or two explaining the same before listing the names Soni (talk) 20:23, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mass organisations

[edit]

In regards to this edit, I think that for all relevant purposes, AIYF and AISF ought to be recognized as here as the mass organizations of CPI. Whilst is its true that these organization are nominally non-partisan, that arrangement is not really taken seriously by anyone today. Same applies for the relationship between CPI(M) and the Students Federation of India, which is supposedly a non-partisan students organization. Or AITUC for that matter, which is supposedly a non-partisan trade union movement.

There is a plethora of references indicating that AIYF and AISF are the youth and student wings of CPI. For example

  • "... All India Youth Federation , the youth organisation of the Communist Party of India..." ([1])
  • AIYF and AISF mention in section "CPI Youth" (Indian Left Review)
  • "... AIYF can become a member of the primary unit . Having the ideology of scientific socialism and functioning as a mass organization , the AIYF supports the policies of the Communist Party of India ( CPI ) and cooperates with it at..." ([2])
  • "...All India Youth Federation ( AIYF ) , the youth wing of the CPI created furore in the Boat Club , New Delhi on the April 3 , 4 , and 5" ([3])
  • "...student and youth cadres of the CPI , under the party's direction , built up the AISF and founded the All India Youth Federation" ([4])
  • "AIYF unleashes a scathing attack on Pinarayi Vijayan, blaming his decisions for LS poll drubbing. The CPI's youth wing blames the CM's conduct ..." (The Hindu)
  • "The All India Youth Federation (AIYF), the youth outfit of the CPI, has called for the..." (The Hindu)
  • "The party's feeder organisations like the All-India Youth Federation (AIYF) and the All-India Students Federation... The membership of the youth wing, AIYF, will be restricted to those who are below 40 years of age." (Manorama)
  • "The DYFI, AIYF and AIYL are youth wings of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India and the Forward Bloc respectively." (HT)
  • "AIYF, the youth wing of the CPI, has decided to actively support the stance taken by its parent organization by launching a campaign seeking ..." (TOI)
  • "She reached CPI through the student body AISF and the youth wing AIYF." (Kerala Kaumudi)
