No Judaean desert, Syria, Athos, Asia Minor...

[edit]

Very Egypt-centric stub!

I've added Chariton. More are needed. Start w. Theoktistus, Theodosius, Gerasimus, Mary of Egypt... :) Not me though.

Map: Judaean desert, wilderness of the Jordan, Jerusalem, Judaean Mountains with Shephelah (think Emmaus etc.): not even marked (only Gaza).

Syria fully left out. Think John Chrysostom, Simeon Stylites,...

Mt Athos and Asia Minor (Cappadocia!) should also be included. Arminden (talk) 15:15, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, neither mentioning the Tur Abdin and Syriac monasticism...
In general a bit of a random list. It includes some random, non-monastic events (Julian apostate becoming emperor, sack of Rome by the Vandals,...) as well as some events where I wonder what the monastic significance is (4th exile of Athanasius, Jerome visits Nitria,...).
I think it would be good if we defined what belongs in here: death of important monastic figures, foundation of monasteries, important monastic writings, major events impacting monastic life (such as council of Chalcedon or final destruction of Scetis). Not sure if non-monastic events like destruction of Rome should also go into such a chronology. PontiffSulivahn (talk) 22:55, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
