"Phony Queen" (Chinese: 電話皇后; pinyin: Diànhuà huánghòu) is a song by Taiwanese recording artist Jolin Tsai, released via digital download on September 29, 2014, by Warner Music Taiwan and Eternal as a promotional song for the game We Dancing Online DX. "Phony Queen" was included in her thirteenth studio album, Play (2014).
Background
[edit]Tsai served as a spokesperson for the dancing game We Dancing Online (Chinese: 唯舞独尊DX) since 2007, which was named after her 2006 single "Dancing Forever" (唯舞独尊).[1][2] In early September 2014, it was revealed that Tsai would release a new album by the end of the year.[3]
Later that month, promotional images for "Phony Queen" surfaced online, followed by the complete song being leaked on September 18. Some online users speculated that it was a publicity stunt, but Tsai's record company refuted the claim, stating "The song length is incorrect, the sound quality is flawed, and we would never do such a thing."[4]
Composition
[edit]The song's lyrics explore the significant reliance on mobile phones by contemporary people in an ironic manner. The song's lyricist, Wyman Wong, commented that, "for many people today, their closest companion might not be their romantic partner but the mobile phone they constantly keep with them. He added that phones have become essential for tasks such as finding directions, working, and food."[5]
Music video
[edit]The music video was directed by Jeff Chang and cost NT$6 million to produce.[6]
