Other potential sourcing
[edit]- this page has some good biographical information, but unsure whether it's an RS.
- He's a supporter so not independent, but the only source beyond Perry's book for his death. Op Ed from the same source. Star Mississippi 15:02, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
Mafundi
[edit]He took the name Mafundi? What does it mean? When did he adopt it?
[This https://theburningspear.com/long-live-mafundi-lake-mafundi-lake-day-raises-up-martyred-african-political-prisoner/] is interesting although Burning Spear may not meet Wikipedia reliable source criteria? FloridaArmy (talk) 23:42, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
He's noted here and Richard Arrington discusses him here referring to him as Mafundi. FloridaArmy (talk) 23:54, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
Mafundi is Swahili for craftspeople / artisans?
One challenge I see for this subject is that he is covered and discussed extensively in Black Nationalist and Socialist media but I am not seeing much in what Wikipedia policy considers reliable independent sources. Is there coverage in newspaper archives? I also wonder if the entry will be maintained properly if it is created. But he's an interesting guy and I support the subject's coverage despite the issues I've raised. Mafundi Day celebrations should be discussed and Mafundi Day should link to this entry if it is created. FloridaArmy (talk) 00:54, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for all of this @FloridaArmy.
- I learned of him and started the draft when I read Perry's book and I assumed there would be more, but I haven't found it in the intervening years. I'll do some more digging later this month. Star Mississippi 01:24, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
Things to consider; another source
[edit]@FloridaArmy - I agree that there is a need for a Wikipedia accepted reliable source. I found this reliable source, which gives extensive details of his life, including his arrests, convictions, and incarcerations:
- ★★ Russell, John David (2016) "Beyond The Whipping Post: The Judicial Sanctioning of Cruel and Unusual Punishment in Atmore Prison 1964-August 28, 1975," Vulcan Historical Review': Vol. 20, Article 13. Available at: https://digitalcommons.library.uab.edu/vulcan/vol20/iss2016/13
- easier read here, start at page 112
- Also, found his obituary, which might be used as a source: https://obits.al.com/us/obituaries/birmingham/name/richard-lake-obituary?id=10002200
Recommendations:
- Article should highlight his association with Free Alabama Movement and Inmates for Action (though I haven't found "reliable sources" to get details about IFA). The role of these two organizations might make the case for current relevance/notability.
- In addition, I think the article should include what he had been convicted of previously that allowed the Habitual Offender act to apply.
