The Caspian University of Technologies and Engineering named after Shakhmardan Yessenov (Kazakh: Шахмардан Есенов атындағы Каспий технологиялар және инжиниринг университеті, also known as Yessenov University) is a multidisciplinary higher education institution in Aktau, Kazakhstan. Founded in 1976, the university was later named in honor of Kazakh scientist Shakhmardan Yessenov, who made significant contributions to the development of geological science and Kazakhstan's geological service.[1]

As of 2024, Yessenov University offers academic programs in 62 undergraduate specialties, 35 master's degree programs, and 7 doctoral programs. The university employs over 350 faculty members, more than 150 of whom hold academic degrees. The student body exceeds 9,000 individuals.

History

The history of Yessenov University dates back to 1976, when the General Technical Faculty of the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute was established in Shevchenko (now Aktau) to train engineering professionals for the Mangystau Territorial Production Complex. The growing demand for new specializations transformed the faculty into a multidisciplinary institution.

  • In 1990, the General Technical Faculty was reorganized into the Mangystau Branch of the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute named after V. I. Lenin.
  • In 1993, the Aktau Polytechnic Institute was established based on the Mangystau Branch of KazPTI.
  • In 1995, the institute was named after Shakhmardan Yessenov.
  • By Resolution No. 573 of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, dated May 7, 1996, the Aktau State University named after academician Sh. Yessenov was established through the merger of the Aktau Polytechnic Institute and the Aktau Branch of Atyrau Pedagogical University.
  • In 2008, Aktau State University named after Sh. Yessenov was renamed the Caspian State University of Technology and Engineering named after Sh. Yessenov.
  • In 2018, the university underwent a rebranding process, adopting the name Yessenov University and redefining its mission, vision, and core values.[2]
  • In 2007, the construction of the university campus began.
  • In 2011, a student dormitory with a capacity of 500 was completed, and a sports complex was inaugurated in 2013.
  • In 2018, the "Service Learning" Center was established.[3]
  • In 2019, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, visited the Yessenov University Maritime Academy.[4]
  • In 2020, the university was reorganized into a non-profit joint-stock company.
  • In 2021, Yessenov University received institutional accreditation from ACQUIN (Germany).[5]
  • In 2022, the Huawei ICT Academy and the Foresight School were launched.[6]
  • In 2023, the Kazakh-German Institute of Sustainable Engineering (KINI) was established.[7]
  • In 2024, the Student Park, Sports Stadium, and Technopark were inaugurated.[8]

Yessenov University hosts the Kazakh-German Institute of Sustainable Engineering (KINI).

Rankings and Accreditations

  • Yessenov University has received international institutional accreditation from ACQUIN.[9]
  • In 2023, Yessenov University ranked 521st globally in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.[10]
  • In 2024, Yessenov University was ranked 6th in the National Ranking of Leading Multidisciplinary Universities of Kazakhstan.[11]
  • In the QS Asian University Rankings, Yessenov University ranked #451–460 overall and 28th in Central Asia.[12]
  • The Maritime Training Center of Yessenov University has been certified by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS).[13]
