Vlastimil Beránek (* 1960, Nové Město na Moravě) is a prominent Czech sculptor and glass artist who continues the rich tradition of Czech glass art. As a graduate of a prestigious art school under the guidance of legendary professor Stanislav Libenský, he is one of the most distinctive personalities of contemporary Czech glass art.
Family Background and Origins
[edit]Beránek comes from a traditional glassmaking family, whose third generation significantly influenced the development of Czech glassmaking. His ancestors established a glassworks in Škrdlovice in the 1940s, which became an important center of artistic glassmaking. This family heritage deeply shaped Beránek's artistic development and relationship to glass as an artistic medium.
Artistic Style
[edit]A characteristic feature of Beránek's work is his extraordinary ability to transform seemingly static materials into dynamic forms. He specializes in creating large-scale sculptures that transcend traditional glassmaking art. His works are:
- Minimalistic in design
- Technologically challenging
- Capable of expressing deep emotional content
- Attractive from every angle
Beránek works not only with glass but also with luxury hardwoods and bronze. Each material serves him as a means of expressing internal tension and hidden movement. His sculptures balance on the edge between abstract form and concrete expression.
Artistic Principles
[edit]A key method of his work is the ability to capture a fleeting moment in a permanently fixed form. He seeks to:
- Freeze movement in a static sculpture
- Express dynamics through precise proportions
- Push the technological limits of the processed material
Sources of Inspiration
[edit]Beránek's work is fundamentally influenced by two natural phenomena:
The Sea
[edit]The ocean represents an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him - mysterious, changeable, and constantly moving living organism. He is fascinated by its ability to continuously transform and maintain hidden tension.
Fire
[edit]The second key source of inspiration is fire, specifically transitional moments, such as the last wisp of smoke when extinguishing a match. These fleeting moments Beránek can artistically capture and materialize.
Significance and Legacy
[edit]Vlastimil Beránek is one of the leading representatives of the contemporary Czech glass school. With his original approach to material and ability to push the boundaries of artistic expression, he significantly contributes to the international reputation of Czech glassmaking.
