United States Prestige Proof Sets

The United States Prestige Proof Set is a type of proof coin set issued by the United States Mint annually from 1983 to 1997. Each set includes proof versions of the circulating U.S. coins for that year together with one or more commemorative coins.

History

[edit]

The Prestige Proof Set was first introduced in 1983, alongside the release of the 1983 Olympic silver dollar, the first commemorative coin issued by the U.S. Mint in nearly three decades[1]. The Mint designed the set to combine standard circulating coinage with commemorative coins in one package.

Each set was packaged in a hardcover, book-style case with a fitted insert and protective outer box[2]. The series was discontinued after 1997, as demand declined and the U.S. Mint shifted its focus to other collector-oriented products.

Design and Composition

[edit]

The coins in the Prestige Proof Sets were struck at the San Francisco Mint[3]. The set included:

The commemorative coins featured designs authorized by congressional coin programs[4] for each year. For example, the 1986 set included the Statue of Liberty Centennial silver dollar and half dollar, while the 1993 set featured coins from the Bill of Rights commemorative program.
