Tim J Smith CBE is a veteran of the food, drink and farming sector. He has spent more than four decades as a manufacturer and marketer of fresh, frozen and ambient food, as the UK's food regulator.
Smith has held senior positions across industry and government, including serving as Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency and Group Quality Director at Tesco. He is currently the Non-Executive Chairman of Cranswick plc and Co-Chair of the UK Food and Drink Sector Council.
Early life and education
[edit]Smith studied microbiology and zoology at the University of Leeds.
Career

[edit]Smith began his career in food manufacturing, later becoming CEO of Arla Foods plc.
Food Standards Agency
[edit]From 2007 to 2012, Smith was the Chief Executive of the UK's Food Standards Agency, overseeing food safety regulations and policy.
Tesco
[edit]In October 2012, Smith joined Tesco as Group Quality Director. He stepped down in 2017.[1].
Later roles
[edit]In 2019, Smith became a Non-Executive Director of Pret a Manger[2], member of the Board and an advisor on food policy.
He was appointed Chair of the UK government's Trade and Agriculture Commission[3] in July 2020.
Since 2022, he has served as Co-Chair of the Food and Drink Sector Council[4], working with industry leaders and government officials.
Other positions
[edit]Smith is the Chair of the Board of Governors at Sheffield Hallam University[5] and a Trustee of the Natasha Allergy Foundation[6].
Current position
[edit]Smith is the non-executive Chairman of Cranswick plc[7]
Honours and recognition
[edit]Smith was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)[8] in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to agriculture, food, and drink trade policy.
