Jocelyn Rojo Carranza (June 17, 2013 – February 8, 2025)[1] was an Texan girl who had died by suicide after being bullied by her school peers over her family's immigration status.[2] Her mother, Marbella Carranza, had reported that Jocelyn was bullied by her school peers as they threatened to call the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on her family.
Background
[edit]Jocelyn Rojo Carranza was born in Gainesville, Texas on June 17, 2013 to parents Ernesto Rojo and Marbella Carranza, being one of eight siblings in her family.[1] She was reportedly baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church [2] and attended Gainesville Intermediate School in Texas. Jocelyn was also a member of The Boys & Girls Club of Cooke County and was described as “kind, sweet and a great friend to many."[2]
Bullying and suicide
[edit]It was reported that Carranza was bullied by her peers in school over her parents immigration status, going to the extent of taunting to call the Immigration and Customs Enforcement on her parents so that they could "take her parents away and she would be left alone." Mrs. Carranza claimed that the school was aware of the bullying but never told her what was happening with Jocelyn.[3] On February 3, Jocelyn was found unresponsive by her mom in their house in Gainesville and was rushed to an intensive care unit in Dallas, where she had passed away five days later at Medical City Children's Hospital.[4] Her funeral was held on February 12 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gainesville.
Aftermath
[edit]Gainesville Independent School District (GISD) stated via email that it is unable to release information related to specific students or incidents but that it has several policies in place to tackle bullying:
"The top priority of the Gainesville ISD is to ensure a safe and comfortable learning environment for all students. Because of this, we take any reports of bullying at our schools very seriously and have a zero-tolerance policy.
Whenever we receive a report of bullying, we respond swiftly to ensure all students are safe physically and emotionally. While we cannot release any information about specific students or incidents, our schools have several policies in place to combat bullying and resolve conflicts.
These policies provide opportunities to report such behavior. If a report arises, the District immediately takes all steps necessary to respond appropriately. We have been, and will continue to be proactive in our efforts to make sure our schools are safe, secure, and free from harassment."[4]
On Feb. 27, the Gainesville Police Department provided a Public Case Report via email that said it had received several calls regarding an attempted suicide on Feb. 3 [4], the day which Jocelyn was rushed to intensive care after a suicide attempt.
Kevin Phillips, chief of police at the Gainesville Police Department, responded via email that the incident was still being actively investigated. [4]
