Matt Jackson DSO

Brigadier (Retired) Matt Jackson DSO is a former senior officer in the Royal Marines who served in the British Armed Forces from 1994 to 2024. Following his retirement, he became Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Marines Association – The Royal Marines Charity.

Early Life and Education

He was educated at Oundle School between 1983 and 1990, before going on to study History at Jesus College, Cambridge from 1991 to 1994. While at Cambridge, he rowed in the victorious Goldie crew in the 1993 Boat Race.

Military Career

Matt Jackson joined the Royal Marines in 1994. His early operational deployments included serving as a Troop Commander in Northern Ireland in 1995, and as a Liaison Officer in Bosnia in 1999. He deployed to Iraq on three occasions: twice as a Company Commander in 2003 and 2004, and once as a staff officer. For his service during this latter deployment, he was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service (QCVS) in 2009. ^[1]

In 2012, Jackson commanded 40 Commando Royal Marines during Operation Herrick 17 in Nahr-e-Saraj, Afghanistan. For his leadership on this deployment, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).^[2]

From 2014 to 2016, Jackson served as Secretary to the Chiefs of Staff at the Ministry of Defence. He subsequently held the position of Deputy Brigade Commander of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines from 2016 to 2018. In 2018, he assumed command of 3 Commando Brigade, leading the landing force during a large multinational operation in the Baltic region in 2019. ^[3]

His final role in the military was as Director of the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) at Shrivenham. Concurrently, he served as Assistant Commandant General Royal Marines, responsible for regimental business.

Jackson is a governor at St Peter’s School in Harefield, Lympstone.
