Mark Bochsler is a photographer, cinematographer, and director based in the greater Toronto area, Canada. Bochsler was born and grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, and is a graduate of both McMaster University and Mohawk College.[1] He currently works at the CBC.[1]
Notable works include director of photography for the 2009 comedy At Home by Myself... with You, cofunded by Telefilm Canada[2], which premiered at the 2009 Vancouver International Film Festival, where it was rated among the top ten films.[3]
In 2013 Bochsler was nominated for a CSA/Gemini award for his work on Fatal Deception (CBC).[4]
On a work holiday with his partner, producer Sandra Leuba, in Cambodia, Bochsler and Leuba grew curious about the absence of an obvious martial arts tradition in post-genocide Cambodia. They discovered a grandmaster on a mission to revive the traditional martial art of Bokator, all but extinguished by the Kmer Rouge.[1] Over the next several years, the couple, Bochsler as director, and Leuba as producer, followed him in his work, creating a documentary Surviving Bokator.[5] Shown at the Hamilton Film Festival, the work won praise from Jeff Mahoney, writing in the Hamilton Spectator, who wrote in the Hamilton Spectator that the film "tells a powerful story with relevance and applicable lessons for every culture" and Nathan Fleet, who called it "a gem".[1] Surviving Bokator was screened at more than 20 film festivals to critical acclaim[6][7][8][9][10], winning multiple awards[4] and honorary mentions[11] in best documentary and best documentary director categories. Radio-Canada noted that it documents both the human and cultural losses of the times.[12] The Cambodian Ministry of Culture invited ‘Surviving Bokator’ to screen at the Angkor Wat Temple Complex, the first international non-fiction film to do so.[13]
In 2024, Bochsler collaborated on Space Journey, in which live choral works, performed by Hamilton's Bach-Elgar choir, accompanied Bochsler‘s film created from imagery from the Voyager space probes and James Webb Space Telescope.[14]
