Draft:Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology (LBI Trauma) is an Austrian research institute in cooperation with the General Accident Insurance Institution (AUVA). It was founded in 1980 by Günther Schlag. Since 2019, the LBI Trauma has been led by Johannes Grillari and Thomas Hausner. Its headquarters are located in Vienna, and it currently employs over 80 scientists from various disciplines:.[1]

History

[edit]

The LBI Trauma has its origins in the Traumatology Research Center founded in 1973 by Wolfgang Krösl for the AUVA. As part of an expansion of the research center, Günther Schlag established the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental and Clinical Traumatology in 1980. In 1998, the non-profit organization Trauma Care Consult was integrated, which further developed the structure of LBI Trauma.[1]

In 2003, in cooperation with the blood bank of the Upper Austrian Red Cross, a branch office was established in Linz. Further strengthening of the research center followed, including the co-founding of the Austrian Cluster for Tissue Regeneration in 2006.[1]

In 2021, the cooperation agreement with AUVA was renewed, which resulted in the renaming to "Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology, the Research Center in Cooperation with AUVA".[1]

The Institute

[edit]

LBI Trauma is an extramural research institution of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society and is dedicated to the development of diagnostic, therapeutic, and regenerative research strategies for the treatment of trauma patients. The research center is located at the Lorenz Böhler Trauma Hospital in Vienna and also operates a branch office in Linz, which primarily focuses on the extraction and research of human adult stem cells.[1]

The aim of the research institute is to enable full and sustainable recovery for trauma patients. To achieve this, LBI Trauma follows an interdisciplinary scientific strategy. Currently, more than 80 scientists from disciplines such as chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, medicine, physics, medical and electrical engineering are employed at the institute. In addition, the institute supports the training and continuing education of physicians and students through cooperation with other educational institutions in Vienna.[1]

Since 1980, LBI Trauma has recorded over 1,800 publications and has organized international conferences, including the TERMIS World Congress and the Wiggers-Bernard Conferences.[1]

Research Focus

[edit]

LBI Trauma comprises 12 interdisciplinary research groups[2]
