Draft:Liquid Motion Tumbler

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liquid Motion Tumbler is a toy that appeared in the Baby Einstein videos. It is made by Sunstar Industries/Toysmith.

Physical Description

[edit]

The toy consists of two main parts. The upper part of the oil drop is the actual oil drop itself. It's made out of glass ( or another transparent material ) and has water and oil inside. Most of the container is filled up with transparent oil while the colored liquids are actually just water and don’t make up much space. There are actually two pieces that are glued together at the edges where each different water color is stored. Each container has twelve tiny diagonal curves ( six on each side ) inside that make tiny funnels. On each side, there is a curved piece that is designed to hold onto the stand. Since the containers are always together, it looks like one circle piece instead of two curved ones.

The bottom part is the stand. It's made out of black plastic and is designed to hold the oil tumbler. The bottom part has curves on each side that meet in the middle to create a small flat portion that has the connector piece on top. The connector piece is almost a U shape with two short pieces that point inward at the top, designed to fit in circular pieces on the oil tumbler.

Function/use The function of the toy is pretty simple. Have both pieces connected to each other and just flip the oil drop upside down. The colored water will then slowly go through the funnels and will break off in circular pieces. The water then floats down to the other funnels where it drips through them and collects itself at the very bottom. Technically you don't need the stand to flip it but you'll have to hold it yourself as it can't stand on its own.

The Liquid Motion Tumbler appears once in the video during the "Aiueo" segment. It fades onscreen as the background tune starts. It's clear that the toy had just been flipped over right before it fades in as the lower portion is completely empty. The camera is facing the blue side of the container so the pink water that gets behind is slightly obscured. The pink water droplets start out dropping in great numbers and being small but eventually slow down and become bigger. Overtime, the pink water builds up at the funnels as it isn’t able to go down fast enough. The blue liquid on the other hand doesn’t function as intended. Instead of flowing down in bubbles like it's supposed to, a large amount of it quickly collects itself at the upper part of the container and slowly breaks off at the sides, where pieces of it flow down on its respective side and never go to the middle. It builds up at the side and a little at the bottom middle but not as much as the pink water did. This is one of the issues that occurs with the toy when mistreated, as described above. The water continues to drop from the oil drop until it eventually transitions to the next scene.
