Submission declined on 19 April 2025 by Theroadislong (talk). This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. If you still feel that this subject is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies. Declined by Theroadislong 53 days ago. | ![]() |

The Institute of Survey and Land Management (ISLM) is a public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institute located in Entebbe, Uganda.[5][6] It operates under the oversight of the Ministry of Education and Sports.[7] The institute specializes in providing technical and vocational training in the fields of surveying, land management, physical planning, and related disciplines.[8][9] Its origins trace back to a training school established during the British colonial era to support national mapping efforts.[10]
History
[edit]The history of technical training in surveying in Uganda has roots dating back to 1922 with students admitted to Makerere Technical College.[11] The survey technician's course later moved to Nakawa Vocational College before the establishment of the Survey Training School in Entebbe in **1944** by the British Government.[12][13] Located in Katabi, which was then part of Mpigi District (now within Wakiso District where Entebbe is located), its primary purpose was the specialized training of technicians for generating national maps and relevant data.[14] The school played a role in training early Ugandan professionals in the field, graduating the first group of Ugandan surveyors in the 1950s.[15]
Initially operating under the policy direction of the Ministry of Lands, the school expanded its programs, beginning to admit S4 leavers for diploma-level training in 1971.[16] A significant change occurred during a government restructuring exercise in 1998, when training institutions, including the Survey Training School, were transferred from various ministries to the Ministry of Education and Sports.[17] Following this transfer and a period addressing transitional processes, the school was reopened around **2006** as the Institute of Survey and Land Management, formed through the merger of the Survey Training School and the Physical Planning School.[18][19]
Academics
[edit]The Institute of Survey and Land Management offers a range of technical and vocational programs aimed at equipping students with practical skills for the land sector. These programs include:[20][21]
- National Certificate in Land Management and Geomatics
- National Diploma in Land Survey
- National Diploma in Cartography
- National Diploma in Physical Planning
- National Diploma in Land Management and Valuation (or Property Valuation)
The institute also offers shorter, specialized courses such as a Postgraduate Certificate in the Management of Land Acquisition, Resettlement and Rehabilitation (MLARR), focusing on addressing specific needs within the land administration sector.[22]
Campus and Location
[edit]The Institute of Survey and Land Management is situated in Entebbe, within the Wakiso District of Uganda.[23] Its address is provided as Plot 24, Julia Ssebutinde Road, Katabi.[24] The campus facilities are dedicated to providing the necessary environment for technical and practical training in its specialized fields.
