Hjördis Kamph (1934 – February 2025) was a Swedish horse enthusiast, equestrian inspector, and journalist known for her contributions to Swedish Warmblood breeding and horse sport. She was one of the first women in Sweden to judge young horse evaluations and played a pivotal role in developing the country’s breeding index systems.
Early life
[edit]Hjördis Kamph was born in 1934 and grew up in Hasslöv in southern Halland, Sweden. She was raised on a vicarage where Ardennes horses were used for farm work. During World War II, the family home functioned as a communication center for a battalion from A3 in Kristianstad, and the household often shared close quarters with stationed soldiers. At the age of thirteen, Kamph received her first horse, a gelding named Reval, which she used for both riding and farm labor.
Career
[edit]After marrying Calle Kamph, Hjördis relocated to Lund. There, she became involved with the Swedish Warmblood Association (ASVH, now SWB) through Knut Odh. In the 1970s, she served on the education and travel committee of the Malmöhus County Warmblood Club. In this role, she organized educational trips to Germany to study horse breeding practices.
Kamph became one of the first female horse inspectors in Sweden. She judged foals and young horses at inspections and performance tests and spent considerable time abroad attending stallion approvals in Germany. Her international exposure greatly influenced Swedish breeding standards.
Contributions to breeding statistics
[edit]Kamph was instrumental in the early development of Swedish breeding indices. She meticulously compiled performance data by manually tracking horse pedigrees and competition results published by the Swedish Equestrian Federation. This work laid the groundwork for the national evaluation system later expanded by students at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
Later life and legacy
[edit]In her later years, Kamph managed ASVH’s membership correspondence, registration records, and horse databases. She frequently attended stallion shows and performance tests in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, and was a regular visitor at the Bundeschampionate. She was honored for her lifelong contributions by the Holsteiner Verband.
Kamph celebrated her 90th birthday in the autumn of 2024 and passed away in February 2025. She is remembered as a pioneer in Swedish equestrian history and a respected figure in the world of horse breeding.
