PurposeReceptionist Social Humanoid Robot

Anushka is a humanoid robot created by Piyush Khanna[1][2] with implementations in social robotics and artificial intelligence.

Created as a receptionist[3] and personal assistant, Anushka[4][5] features real-time gesture creation and an autonomous calling function for emergencies. The robot is programmed to understand 61 languages[6], recognize faces, perform lip-syncing, and execute 97 real-time gestures, including hand, eye, and palm movements[7][8]. It utilizes computer vision for autonomous navigation and obstacle avoidance[9][10]. Additionally, Anushka incorporates a home automation system developed by Khanna[11][12].

History and Development

[edit]

The development of project Anushka The Humanoid, began in 2020 as a virtual AI assistant created by Piyush Khanna. Initially, the assistant was designed for tasks such as event management, task list maintenance, news and weather updates, media playback, and chatbot-based interactions, utilizing voice recognition for user input.

As development progressed, the AI assistant was upgraded with computer vision capabilities, enabling it to recognize faces and interpret visual data. The idea of transforming the AI assistant into a humanoid robot was discussed between Khanna and Dr. Manoj Goel, Joint Director of KIET Group of Institutions, where Khanna studied. Following these discussions, Khanna decided to give the AI a physical form, including movable hands, legs, and a responsive face. To achieve this, he formed a dedicated team, later known as Team31[13].

The official development of the humanoid version[14][15] of Anushka commenced on 9 December 2022. By April 2023, a prototype with functional hands and facial mechanisms was completed. Subsequent upgrades enabled Anushka[16][17] to integrate with and control smart devices. In May 2023, work began on developing a hyper-realistic face mask, a process that continued until August 2023, during which the robot underwent testing and habit-building training sessions.

On 1 November 2023, Anushka was officially inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The robot was publicly introduced to the media[18] on 22 March 2024, receiving coverage[19][20] from major news outlets, including News18 India[21], The Indian Express[22], Dainik Bhaskar[23], Republic Bharat, and ABP News.

Features

[edit]

Anushka features an autonomous navigation system utilizing person tagging and computer vision, enabling movement without external sensors. The robot’s mobility system allows it to navigate dynamic environments while adapting to obstacles.

Anushka is programmed to understand and communicate in upto 61 languages, facilitating multilingual interactions. It is equipped with lip-syncing capabilities, expressive neck and jaw gestures, and dynamic facial expressions, including upto 20 eye gestures. Additionally, it can perform upto 50 hand gestures and 30 palm gestures, generated in real-time based on the conversational tone.

Anushka also features a simulated heartbeat mechanism, designed to replicate rhythmic pulsations, adding to its interactive capabilities.[24]

Key Features

[edit]
  • Autonomous Calling Capability: Anushka can autonomously initiate phone calls in critical situations. It notifies administrators when its battery level drops below a defined threshold or if it detects an environmental anomaly, such as a potential accident[25].
  • Integrated Home Automation: The robot includes a home automation system developed by Piyush Khanna. This allows it to interact with smart devices, such as lighting, appliances, and security systems, for use in residential and commercial settings[26][27].
  • Global Updates: Anushka provides real-time news and weather forecasts for various locations[28][29]. It accesses global data sources to deliver updates on weather conditions, news, and events[30][31].

Vedic-Inspired Cognitive Architecture

[edit]

Anushka The Humanoid incorporates a cognitive[32] architecture influenced by Vedic principles, drawing inspiration from traditional models of human cognition[33]. This framework is structured around four key components:

  • Chitta (Memory and Knowledge Repository) – Functions as Anushka’s knowledge base, integrating both global internet resources and cached information acquired through real-time learning. This enables the system to reference stored knowledge while adapting to new inputs.
  • Manas (Sensory Processing and Coordination) – Acts as the sensory processing unit, organizing and filtering environmental inputs. It processes data from Anushka’s vision system, audio inputs, and contextual cues, allowing for adaptive responses in interactions.
  • Ahankara (Context Awareness and Identity) – Provides a contextual awareness mechanism, helping Anushka distinguish between different types of interactions. It enables personalized responses by recognizing previous exchanges and understanding relevance in conversation.
  • Buddhi (Decision-Making and Reasoning) – Serves as the reasoning module, responsible for logical inference, decision-making, and adaptive learning. It allows Anushka to analyze patterns, prioritize responses, and refine its interaction style over time.

This approach enables Anushka to organize and prioritize information dynamically. The system is designed to refine responses based on context, emphasizing adaptability in interactions.
