The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) is a public, non-profit, coeducational institution located in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs based on the North American model of higher education.

AURAK traces its origins to 2005, when George Mason University (USA) established its Ras Al Khaimah campus (GMU-RAK). The university was officially established in 2009, building on the foundation provided by GMU-RAK. In 2023, Dr. David A. Schmidt was appointed president of the university.[1]

[edit]

AURAK offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in disciplines such as engineering, business, arts and sciences, and information technology. In 2020, the university launched four new academic programs to expand its offerings.[2]

The university is also active in research. In 2023, a study by AURAK researchers called for greater awareness of enteroviruses in the Arabian Gulf region.[3]

[edit]

AURAK promotes collaboration between academia and industry. It has hosted various events, including an international conference on electrical and computing technologies in 2023 that attracted 99 papers from over 40 universities.[7]

The university also hosted colloquiums on artificial intelligence,[8] and partnered with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2024 to support best practices in engineering education.[9]

Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives

[edit]

AURAK is one of the founding members of the Nature Positive Universities Alliance, a global initiative supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).[10]

It has also ranked highest among UAE universities in the GreenMetric World University Rankings,[11] and announced plans to achieve its long-term sustainability goals through various campus-based initiatives.[12]
