The 55Zh6U Nebo-U, NATO reporting name "Tall Rack", is a long-range surveillance radar system developed and deployed by the Russian Federation. This mobile, multi-band radar operates in the VHF spectrum and is designed to provide early warning and airspace monitoring capabilities.

Development

[edit]

Early Development & Testing

[edit]

The development of the 55Zh6U Nebo-U radar system is part of a longer lineage of Russian air surveillance radars, with its roots tracing back to the late 1970s. The Nebo family of radars began its development in 1986 with Alexander Zachepitsky at the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Radio Engineering (NNIIRT)[1][2] . This initiative was a response to the Soviet air defense commanders' desire for a more capable mobile VHF radar system, as the existing 2D radars lacked integral heightfinding capabilities[3][2] . In 1992, Nebo-U underwent testing in the Astrakhan region [1].

Production Start

[edit]

Serial production of the Nebo-U stations commenced in 1994[1][2] . The following year, in 1995, NNIIRT presented the "Sky-U" radar complex to the Ministry of Defense, showcasing the system's capabilities.[1]. NNIIRT scientists have been continuously improving the Nebo-U system since its initial development. In 2010, they launched development work on the "Niobium" project, which was based on the Nebo-U[1]. The main advantage of Sky-U is a phased array antenna with a digital data processing system. This innovation has improved the accuracy of measuring the height of targets and reduced the zone of uncertainty[1]

Recent Developments

[edit]

As of 2011, NNIIRT developed the 55Zh6M Nebo-M, a multi-band version of the radar. This demonstrates the ongoing evolution of the Nebo family of radars to meet modern air defense challenges. The development of the Nebo-U and its variants represents a significant advancement in Russian radar technology, particularly in countering stealth aircraft and providing long-range air surveillance capabilities[2]
