Oregon Settlements

A non-fan of non-places is prodding some likely-to-be-places. I'll be working on Rice, Oregon. OGN is apparently now considered just a gazetteer, so use moar sources. Others:

Regarding Kingsley, it was demoted to a ghost town, which is fine, but can one link to Google Maps to prove that nothing is there? Seems like WP:OR to me. Said the amateur geographer. I'm also curious, @WeirdNAnnoyed: why Kingsley didn't get a Prod while Rice did. Rice also has a cemetery... Valfontis (talk) 18:46, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello @Valfontis:, I decided not to PROD Kingsley because I could find far more mentions of it in local newspapers than I could Rice (although most of them were trivial mentions of somebody "of Kingsley" doing something completely unnotable, as small-town newspapers often used to print). If you're aware of more substantial information then by all means add it and remove my PROD. I'm not committed to deleting these articles, I just don't think we should have articles about places where all we can say is its name, location, and when it had a post office. That gets into WP:INDISCRIMINATE territory. But if we can say more, we should keep the articles. BTW, my understanding is Google Maps (or other maps) are fine for proving existence (e.g. the cemetery) but not notability. WeirdNAnnoyed (talk) 23:19, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

@WeirdNAnnoyed: I created the Dant article about 10 years ago. Although the article's claims are faithful to the sources cited, the claims are thin, and Dant probably fails the notability test. Tedder is correct in saying that Dant is not mentioned in Stations West, which does however include a map of the Oregon Trunk Railway showing the location of a station named Frieda. The station name was changed from Frieda to Dant in honor of the perlite mine guy. All that is of such minor historical interest that deleting the Dant article seems reasonable. Oregon Trunk Railway and Oregon Trunk Railroad both redirect to Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway, which has only one paragraph about this trunk line. If someone wanted to use the station list in Stations West to expand that paragraph, Dant (Frieda) could rise again as a tiny part of a minor list. Finetooth (talk) 00:00, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

Kintzing Prichette

He is listed as being a 2 month Governor of Oregon yet he does not appear on the Oregon Governors page. Also the dates for Lane's first term and Gaines' term are inaccurate if we properly add Prichette back in. This needs to be reconciled. Coyotez (talk) 21:41, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

Some of the needed changes are related to the creation of South Portland. FPC

Now, I don't want to canvass votes, so please only vote if you would likely have done so anyway, but just to let everyone here know, File:Portland, Oregon, in 1898 - Herbert A. Hale.jpg is up at featured pictures, and looks very likely to pass (it's already at quorum). Used in a number of Portland-related articles; photographer doesn't appear to have an article, though I suspect he could if people wanted to dig into enough non-online sources. There's a lot of holiday-related programming at the square, but I am trying to keep this entry specific to the tree and affiliated festivities, such as the tree arrival parades and lighting ceremonies. Requesting feedback regarding Music Millennium

There's an ongoing disagreement over at Talk:Music_Millennium about an expansion of the article, which includes information about a bizarre protest/publicity stunt against Garth Brooks at the store and its role in the eventual formation of Record Store Day. Request article assessment

Teammates, can I get experienced Wiki-Oregon editors to assess new Frederick Prigg article? Prigg was pioneer physician and pharmacist in 1840s. He opened the first commercial drug store in the Oregon County. He also served as Secretary for the Provisional Government of Oregon, a position that eventually became the Oregon Secretary of State … our second highest state office today. The article’s DYK nomination is approved so hook will be published on Wikipedia’s main page sometime soon ... not sure when. Cities lists merge proposal

I'm avoiding my GIS homework by poking my nose in here: Talk:List of cities in Oregon#Proposed merge of List of cities and unincorporated communities in Oregon with List of cities in Oregon. Does anybody think we still need two articles or are we just being stubborn? I haven't looked at either to see what they even look like now. Is there a valid objection besides WP:IDON'TLIKEIT? Is there a reason to keep besides Valfontis likes it? @Ipoellet? @EncMstr? Cheers, Valfontis (talk) 05:19, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

Oregon seems to be the only state that has a combined list like this. While an index is useful, it is probably more confusing for readers than just maintaining the existing cities list and CDP list. The cities list definitely needs to stay separate to match with the other 49 states, while the unincorporated places can have their own list similar to Washington's. Oregon is doing the right thing by combining carrots and potatoes and calling them all vegetables. The cities which have not combined them are not doing the reader a favor. It makes them have to look in two places instead of one. They are more likely to be surprised by the arbitrarily imposed distinction. —EncMstr (talk) 19:53, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
Incorporation is an important distinction, as it (at least in the Northwest; other states are weird) determines whether you have another layer of government and what services you can receive. An unincorporated community is under direct county rule and has limited representation and independence. Incorporated cities and towns have firm names and recorded histories; unincorporated communities may have been named by the Census Bureau (in the case of CDPs) or have no real name, and hardly enough history to warrant an article under GNG. An equivalent to List of populated places in Oregon (a better name for the combined list) would be an appropriate thing to have for all states as a supplement to the lists that are separated by incorporated/unincorporated status. Somewhat related, but I feel like something like Kansas City, Oregon ought to not have an article of its own. It probably doesn't meet NGEO. Graywalls (talk) 21:36, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

There's been some pushback against having articles about small communities and quite a bit of damage (and no cleanup afterward, usually) has been done by folks not doing WP:BEFORE. (I don't necessarily agree with the current state of NGEO, but that's what we have right now.) Have you done any checking? Kansas City might be notable.
