Mass-mail subscription list shells

[edit]

Below is a list of empty shells that are available for use in the mass message subscription list content model. To use one, go to the page, and move it to the title you want. These pages should typically only be moved to the User and Project namespaces. New shells can be created by administrators and template editors.

Duplicate request venue?

[edit]

Thanks for adding that hatnote earlier, Aaron Liu; I didn't even know Wikipedia:Mass message senders/Requests existed. Judging by the age of the two remaining requests, I don't think anyone else did either. I just moved § Request for mass message delivery: July 5, 2024, which was previously at that page, and delivered it. Is it time to mark the page as historical and direct editors back to this talk page to make requests? Courtesy ping for page creator Terasail. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 04:14, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd suggest redirecting editors to this page. I've had MMS rights for a while and was never aware that the other one existed. This page also seems to be the more active of the two. TheDoctorWho (talk) 04:36, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As indicated at the top of Wikipedia:Mass message senders/Requests, that page was being developed and isn't an active venue for requests. See Wikipedia talk:Mass message senders/Archive 7 § Split archives into discussion & requests. isaacl (talk) 04:37, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Be that as it may, it seems the proposal hasn't quite worked out. The page has fewer than 30 watchers, while this one has 134, significantly reducing the chance that a request will be missed for even a day, let alone a year and a half. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 04:50, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No requests should go on that page, and it's already marked as under development and not in active use. There should be no hatnote on this page pointing to it. isaacl (talk) 21:01, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see no mark of "not in active use", nor do I see a non-custom template that would say that. Aaron Liu (talk) 22:40, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
With this information in mind, I've boldly added a couple of notices indicating that the page is not ready for use at the moment. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 23:36, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's why I decided to add the hatnote instead of attempting to merge it. However, as mentioned, the page has serious usability issues, and development seems to have ceased. What we could do is work out a way to transclude it below, I guess. Aaron Liu (talk) 13:21, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because there has been very little feedback, it's not clear to me what those with the mass messaging permission would prefer. I've advocated for separating requests onto their own page several times, but ultimately it's up to those responding to the requests to decide what works best for them. isaacl (talk) 21:03, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your approach would be the ideal solution, and I also find it more organizationally efficient. However, the proposed page simply doesn't get enough attention to be viable, and usage of this page to make mailing requests seems to have become the norm over the years. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 23:26, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would have no objection to housing requests on a separate page, my only suggestion is that we limit requests to one page, whether it be here or a separate page. If we move them to the other page, transclude it below, leave notes, and add instructions directing to that page instead; it's bound to become over the norm over a period of time. TheDoctorWho (talk) 01:12, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The draft page doesn't get any attention because it's not active. Should that page become the sole way to make requests, the instructions would be revised accordingly. isaacl (talk) 01:59, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was just an idea that I had created a while back to attempt to get the requests moved off this page and onto a separate page, as I never really liked MMS requests being on the second half of this talk page. This was just an example page, and shouldn't be used unless all MMS requests are moved to that page. I never recieved much feedback on this and from the start of this year haven't had much free time to revisit things that I started. If someone wants to take this project on and make it a reality, go ahead, I would support it. Terasail[✉️] 15:04, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is my request too large?

[edit]

Recently decided to re-relaunch The Downlink, WikiProject Spaceflight's newsletter. Instead of going straight into the new issues, I decided to do a special issue recapping everything that had happened since the last issue. I very quickly realized that a single issue would be way too long, so I decided to separate it into two special issues, the first going to 31 December 2023 and the second covering all of 2024. Even so, Special Issue 1 is very large; by byte-size, it's well over twice as large as the next largest issue (it's currently 26,118 bytes, and it will grow). Is it too large to be sent out using MassMessage, or is it too large to be sent out at all? It does start collapsed (I have verified this), so it shouldn't clutter talk pages. Ships & Space(Edits) 18:59, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would say yes, this page is far too long to be reasonable as a mass message. I'd recommend drafting a short summary of the letter (perhaps recycling some its formatting) which leads readers to the full page if they click on something (perhaps including links to sections). The Signpost does something similar which you could take inspiration from. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 21:52, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Will put together a short notice after I've completed the newsletter. Ships & Space(Edits) 22:16, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Would 10,000 bytes or so be about the upper limit? That seems to be how large the typical Downlink issue is. Ships & Space(Edits) 22:38, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest including only updates from 2023 and 2024, or just from 2024. While it's helpful to include older updates, folks generally prefer newsletters with more recent information, and updates from 2021 and 2022 might feel outdated. You are free to make the final decision; this is just a friendly suggestion. – DreamRimmer (talk) 03:42, 30 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unsigned mass messages

[edit]

Can someone cleanup mass messages that go out without dated signatures? This breaks automated archival on talk pages with that enabled by bot. [1] shows such a message, that cannot be archived except manually.

Will do that. Thanks for the notification. – DreamRimmer (talk) 13:59, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sophisticatedevening Before I send out the delivery, the list needs to be more refined. The list had 17+ indef blocked editors, which I had removed. Additionally, there are also editors like User:FataLio or User:Javideh who last edited years ago. The list should be of existing AfC reviewers and a trimmed NPR list that's devoided of indef blocked editors. Of course, you may miss out the admins who are involved in AfC in this manner... – robertsky (talk) 18:51, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Would someone please deliver Minnesota Wikipedia User Group Meeting August 26, 2025

Here are the details

Thanks for your assistance! This is my first Mass message request. Please inform me if I have done anything incorrectly and I will make changes. Myotus (talk) 17:37, 1 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Myotus: I see that no user subscribed to it, yet you opted everyone in by default. We do not spam users' talk pages with messages they did not subscribe to or show interest in. – DreamRimmer 17:58, 1 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
According to Wikipedia's "Guidance for mass messages" policy, having users opt in before receiving messages is encouraged but not required. However, you must provide recipients with a way to unsubscribe from future messages, which I have done. This requirement is similar to the US CAN-SPAM Act.
Wikipedia also states that users who are messaged should be "likely to want their attention drawn to the message." For example, it is appropriate to notify members of a WikiProject about local events or edit-a-thons. The users on my list are previous attendees of Minnesota-based edit-a-thons and Minnesota User Group meetings. I have also focused on active members of the WikiProject Minnesota page and have avoided including users who have identified themselves as being outside of Minnesota.
Additionally, after reviewing the practices of other user groups, I’ve noticed that their mass messaging mailing lists started preloaded with a list users who had not added themselves.
I hope I have explained myself and that the posting can be now be sent. Myotus (talk) 02:45, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In progress. Thanks for explaining, Myotus. I was going to chime in earlier to say this was probably fine, but it slipped my mind! As a side note, that notice should probably not be in templatespace, is there an appropriate title in projectspace you'd like to move it to? TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 02:52, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. DreamRimmer was right to be suspicious. It would have been good if I had stated where I got my list of users in the first place.
Sorry about being in the wrong space I was looking at other mass requests for guidance and saw the May 19, 2025 request was in Templatespace.
I see that you have sent it out. Thank you! Do you need to follow up with anything else? Myotus (talk) 03:11, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I see that Minnesota has been storing their messages in templatespace for years without issue, so I retract my concern about that. Thanks for volunteering to organize this event, and good luck! TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 03:16, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
